Hospitality manager monitors the day to day operation, which includes managing and
coordinating with all the different departments in the hotel, assuring guest satisfaction and
follow the proper steps to ensure the facilities are well maintained in a hotel or restaurant.
Hospitality manager should be an exceptional administrator and a good manager. To run a
hotel or restaurant properly, the hospitality manager has to recruit a skilled worker in the
hotel. The hospitality manager needs to have updated industry knowledge. It will help him to
identify the best workers for employment. This paper will discuss the hospitality industry
overview, important skill profile for hospitality workers, the profile of a hospitality
manager’s role, and recommendation for the training and improvement of workers.
Industry review:
This part will explain the employment of workers in the Australian hospitality
sector. Hospitality industry refers to hotel, restaurant, and café. The hospitality sector of
Australia has been flourishing steadily for the last five years. In the next five years,
employment is anticipated to advance undoubtedly by 12.1%. It means this industry will
create additional 91000 jobs (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2019)
In the hospitality industry, there are several job opportunity. Tourism
accommodation of the hotel is creating several employment opportunities. Tourism in
Australia is facing significant problems which are skill deficiency, substantial recruitment,
and retention difficulties. The Australian government has taken four actions to manage these
challenges through under Tourism 2020 (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2019).
Those actions are developing recruitment and retention for the hospitality sector, increasing
the regional workforce planning, recognition of education and Training gaps, expanding the
workforce (Cloutman, 2019).

employees work in theses cafes and restaurants as casual staff. In café and restaurants, most
of the people were working as waiting for staff. Other job opportunities in this sector are the
chef and kitchen hands (Abs.gov.au, 2019).
Compulsory skill profile for the employees of the hospitality sector:

employers will be discussed in this part. For the employees of the hospitality sector, intense
listening is one of the essential skill. Other necessary skills are co-ordination, social
perceptiveness, and speaking. In the food and beverage services area, the most desirable soft

Several other skills are essential for hospitality workers, which are multitasking, planning,

and cafe and its employees. Hospital managers have several responsibilities. Monitoring
the reservation, reception, housekeeping activities, and room service is the responsibility of
the hospitality manager. Maintaining the property and supervising the security arrangements

interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skill will help the manager to maintain integrity, patience,
and professionalism in a stressful situation (Deloitte Access Economics, 2018). To ensure
the best customer experience, the manager should remain hyper-vigilant about every detail
of the hotel. The manager fixed the goal and motivated employees to achieve the goals. The
manager develops several policies and strategies to achieve the vision of the hotel. The
manager should have hotel operational knowledge. Basic understanding of human resource
management, accounting, and cost control will help the manager to ensure the success of the
hotel. Strong leadership as a skill is needed for the manager. The manager will lead other
employees to perform better, resolve the problem, and motivate employees. Deliver the best
customer experience the manager has to develop a team. Creating a cooperative and open
team environment will be beneficial for the employee’s productivity. It will improve the
guest experience in the hotel. The manager should have the capability to understand
financial reports, financial concepts and financial data. The manager should have flexibility
skill. It will help the manager to create a decisive and proper decision when it is needed
(Ferrier Hodgson, 2017). The skilful worker can provide customer satisfaction accurately.
Staff management is a significant duty of hospitality manager. The manager is responsible
for recruiting skilful workers. To execute appropriate human resource management, the
hospitality manager should have a clear concept about the industry. In the employment
process, it will help him to identify the most desired skills for the post and choose the best
skilful candidate for the post. The vast experience will help the hotel manager to perform
better and run the hotel successfully.

manager will conduct several training and development courses. Those courses will help the
employees to enhance communication skill, writing skill, detail-oriented, organisational skill,
planning process, teamwork, problem solving skill, time management skill, and computer
skills. The government of Australia has taken many steps to improve the skills of the
employees who are working in the hospitality industry.

The hospitality manager please a crucial role to run the business successfully. For the
business growth and success of the hotel, the hospitality manager has to control human
resource management properly. Most efficient staffs will help the hospitality manager to
