Exploring Practices: Process, Materials and Techniques for Hospitality

This project delves into the multifaceted world of hospitality, examining practices, materials, and techniques through a creative lens. The project begins with concept development and research, including mind maps exploring themes like heritage and green tourism, digital marketing, and the influence of art and creativity. It progresses to creative responses using diverse media such as pencil sketches, collages, pen drawings, photography, and paintings, each reflecting aspects of the hospitality industry, from hotel trolleys and establishments to tourism and eco-tourism. Artist research is then conducted, focusing on Vincent van Gogh and Louise Moillon, followed by the creation of final artworks inspired by these artists and the broader theme. • This continuous line drawing of Hotel trolley
was inspired from similar clipart.
• I have used the continuous line technique for
completing this pencil sketch because it depicts
simple object which is symbol for hospitality
industry.
• The hotel Trolley is a common symbol for
hospitality because it can be seen in any large or
small accommodation establishment.
• As soon as a consumer or traveller enters
hospitality organization they are greeted with
the Hotel trolley as trolley man provides them
the service of taking their belongings to the
accommodation area.

• My second pencil sketch focuses on a
Hotel establishment which are major
business classification in the hospitality
industry.
• This pencil sketch utilizes the hatching
technique and is based on the idea of
central location Hotel.
• Hospitality establishment which are
located in lucrative locations such as
centre of the city are usually multi
storeyed because they have to
maximize their space with the available
property available and high costs of
property.

• In the first pen sketch I have created an ice cream cone.
• This simple sketch related to the theme of hospitality chosen for this
digital portfolio because ice cream is a common fast food available
in most hospitality organizations.
• Specifically ice cream cones which are not usually prepared at home
and enjoyed at dining places at Hotels, restaurants, bed and
breakfast, motels, café, and other types of hospitality
establishments.
• I believe that the light pen shading done in the cone sketch make it
more realistic and helps deliver more interesting result while
drawing a simple abject.
• This also has the positive aspect of clear pen lines without any spoilt
edges.

Pen 2 The second pen response sketch is
about lake surrounded by mountains.
I was inspired to create this sketch
under my hospitality theme digital
portfolio because I looked at the
photograph of a beautiful are
surrounded by mountains on tourism
social media handle.
Tourism is big part of the hospitality
industry and many people chose to
take vacations in various naturally
rich locations such as lakes
mountains or beaches
. This response is inspired by such
travelling as it clearly depicts the
scenery of lake being surrounded by
a mountain. The sketching is done

• The first collage is about the broad concept of
tourism and promotion of tourism on social
media.
• I was inspired to create this collage by looking at
social media posts relating to Asian tourism and
collages which were about travelling in Asia.
• This is directly associated with the theme of
hospitality because tourism is major part of
hospitality sector.
• I have been able to create this collage by using
variety of images related to tourism and
hospitality in Asian on the Internet.
• I believe the collage is good because it is clear
and directly showcase the theme which makes it
easier to understand.

• Here I have created a collage about the area of luxury and five star hotels
which are major profit earning member of the hospitality industry.
• In my experience of travelling I have learned that luxury and five star
hotels are usually created in a place which already holds historical, cultural
or heritage based significance.
• This is because it helps attract larger number of consumers to the hotel. I
created this collage by using the pictures if various five star, luxury and
heritage hotels from the internet.
• I believe that it depicts the concept of premium level hospitality effectively
as the luxurious aspect is captured here.

• Here I clicked a photograph of the Savoy
Hotel in London, United Kingdom.
• This photograph than was passed through
filters to give it a vintage look.
• I used the vintage look for this scenario
because the Savoy Hotel has long history in
United Kingdom.
• The Savoy Hotel is a luxury hotel located in
the Strand in the City of Westminster in
central London, England. Built by the
impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte with
profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan opera
productions, it opened on 6 August 1889.

Photography 2
• I applied my digital photography skills in this photograph. This is because I took
the image of landmark hotel room in united kingdom and then used a vintage
filter on it. After this I pasted the copped part of the vintage filter image over the
original photography.
• In this way I was able to create an amalgamated product by using the original
photography and the filter image.
• The photo was presented clearly with no sign of cope paste or wrong arrangement
of the filtered image over the original image.
• This makes the photography look unique and professional

• I have created this painting of folded hands because the concept of folding hands to
others is considered a symbol for hospitality.
• It is the traditional way of greeting people that has been in practice for so long
across most local traditions of the Indian heritage.
• This simple gesture has spread across the world and even hospitality establishments
use it to greet the guests.
• In this way the painting is indirectly connected to the theme of hospitality as it is
widely associated with the notion of welcoming and treating guests effectively.
• The painting uses multiple colures because it makes the painting looks more alive
and eye catching.

• This painting showcases eco-tourism which is an important part of the hospitality
industry.
• This is because the painting looks at the scenery of a cottage surrounded by greenery
and wells.
• The fauna depicted in this painting and still atmosphere is ideal for Eco-tourists.
• The green shading on the trees includes both the shades of dark green and light green.
• Similarly the shading and colours used in the nearby rocks, tree bark and well also used
different shades of brown so that it is appropriately differentiated. I
• n fact many consumers also prefer touring and travelling to locations which are
naturally pleasant.
• The beauty of nature and eco-friendly life is effectively depicted in this painting which
could garner the attention of many tourists.

• Vincent Van Gogh has been very
influential artist in my life.
• I believe that his paintings have an
empathetic quality which has deep impact
on the viewer and have personally made
me appreciate art on a more profound
level.
• I have to agree that the Potato eaters is
not the most celebrated Van Gogh
painting when comparing it to the starry
night or the scream but the painting
effectively depicts the plight faced by
farmers as they have to toil the earth to
receive the food for survival.

Artist Research 2
Still Life with Cherries, Strawberries and
Gooseberries, 1630 by Louise Moillon

• This still life painting by Louise Moillon
created in the year 1630 is one of my
favourites because of its purely aesthetic
quality.
• The painting has the classical
characteristics of a perfect art piece and
showcases the subject of the painting in
a very elegant manner.
• I admire this painting personally
because of its ability to depict still life
realistically and creating three
dimensional paintings with life like
quality in the seventeenth century.

• I have developed this water
colour panting by using
different shades of pinks to
paint realistic fruits.
• Although I was not able to
create specific details like in
Louise Moillon’s art pieces but
I was able to showcase clarity
in the painting with clear
composition of the objects and
good usage of diffident types
of shades.

Favorite Artist Piece
In response to one of my favourite
Vincent Van Gogh Paintings I
have created a similar scene on a
white paper. Here also people are
collectively eating food.
However I have made some slight
modifications as the painting does
not look gloomy and empathetic
as before.
This is done by usage of variety
of light colours such as pink.
I believe that this has made my
painting original yet inspired.
