INTRODUCTION
Professional and personal development is a vital process for the individual that helps
in encouraging the learning in the individual so as to meet the set goals and
objectives and to face the challenges in both professional and personal life. the
development in the personal and professional aspect helps in developing the
understanding of the skills that are necessary for utilizing, managing and completing
the tasks in the given timeframe. By using the professional and personal styles of
development, a person can build new opportunities that will help in the achievement
of the set goals and objectives which will also help in enhancing the self’s identity.
The assignment helps in the evaluation of the approaches of the self-managed
learning along with the method proposed used for lifelong learning in both the
context i.e. personal and professional. In the next part of the assignment, a report is
prepared in which the evaluation of the self-owned skills and the competencies as
per the professional standards are done and the area where the improvement is
needed is identified. At last, the solutions to the work based problems are identified
and is communicated at the various level in the organisations.

TASK 1
1.1 APPROACHES OF THE SELF-MANAGED LEARNING
Self-managed learning is defined as the process which is initiated by the individuals
either with the help of some people or without and helps in the diagnosis of the need
in the learning department, setting and formulating of the goals and the objectives,
identification of the material and human needs required for learning, to decide on the
appropriate suitable learning strategies and at last helps in the revaluation of the
outcomes of the learning (Cunningham and Bennett, 2017).
Since self-managed learning is all about the individuals managing their own learning
procedures, therefore they are tend to make the decision regarding the what is to be
learnt, how it is to be learnt, when it is to be learnt, where it is to be learnt and at last
why is to be learnt (Cunningham and Bennett, 2017).
There are various approaches that can be employed for the self-learning. Some of
them are discussed below:
Self-directed learning
When the person opts for the self-directed learning, an initiative is taken by him
along with the responsibility of the occurrence of the event afterwards. The selection,
management and assessment of the learning activities are done by the individuals,
which is assessable at any point time, through any means and disregard of the age
(Cunningham, 2017).
Seminars and conferences
One of the best ways of the of self-managed learning is the seminars and the
conferences and this is because in the seminars and the conferences people get
together and share their ideas as well as their experiences which also helps them in
improving their overall personality as well the personal skills by sharing their own
ideas which can be used as the base for some new and innovative thing
(Cunningham, 2017). One more advantage of the seminars and the conferenced is
that they help in boosting up their confidence as well as the public speaking skill
(Cunningham, 2017).

Social networks
One of the easy and most accessible ways of the self-managed learning is the social
media platforms both real and virtual, like Facebook, Twitter, local community,
various communities formed on the basis of the interest etc. As per the research,
people tend to spend more than two hours on these social platforms in order to
share their ideas and interact with new people which results in the enhancement of
their skills along with the development of the overall personality and in the ways of
communication (Cunningham, 2017).
Internet
One of the fastest and the easiest way of gaining knowledge and learning is the
internet i.e. by surfing through different websites on any desired topic. The
availability of the data in any particular topic is very vast and is sufficient for
developing the complete understanding of the topic at any point in time and at the
minimum cost (Cunningham, 2017).
In the Travelodge hotel, the focus is in on hiring and giving the opportunities
regarding employment to the youth. Therefore the self-managed approaches suitable
for the Travelodge are:
Motivational learning
One of the driving factors of the performance is motivation, so in the case of the
Travelodge, with the help of the motivational learning technique of the self-managed
learning, the employees and the staff working there gets the opportunity to set their
personal goals and objectives as the base if their learning (Cunningham, 2017). As a
result of this, employees now get the liberty to satisfy their own developmental
needs. This will also help the Travelodge as the employees are working hard to meet
the organisational goals as well in the process (Cunningham, 2017).

In Travelodge, the employees reading about the roles and responsibilities is also a
good way which helps in the maintenance of the techniques of the self-managed
learning. Therefore by reading the books and the handbooks regarding the
operations and processes of the Travelodge, the employees will be aware of the set
standards of the hotel which will help them in improving their performance so as to
match the set standards (Cunningham, 2017).

1.2 WAYS TO EMBOLDEN THE LIFELONG LEARNING
Lifelong learning is a concept referring to the concept that looks out for consistent
development in the overall personality of the individual with respect to both parts i.e.
Personal and professional (Hildebrand, 2018). Here the emphasis is on the way that
I employ as a manager to encourage the lifelong learning at the Travelodge hotel
because as a manager, I have to play several roles for encouraging the
phenomenon of the lifelong learning (Hildebrand, 2018). One of the vital role as a
manager to embolden the phenomenon of the lifelong learning it to recognise the
interest of the employee and then to motivate him to achieve the level of expertise on
the similar aspect (Punt et al., 2016).
For crafting the improvement in the skills, knowledge, a quality so as to sustain the
position at the workplace, a critical role is played by the learning. Being the manager
I will suggest the following ways:
Self-evaluation
For lifelong learning, one of the effective methods is the self-evaluation which helps
in the understanding of the own value as compared to the set benchmark in
Travelodge (Punt et al., 2016). I will suggest my team to conduct the proper
evaluation of the one’s own skills and gaps that have the influencing effect on the
working and the performance of the individual. I will try to implement the measure
and the policies for establishing a better understanding of the effectiveness of each
and every individual working in the hotel (Punt et al., 2016).
Internet
In the present scenario, the internet is the hub of all kind of information which is
easily accessible and is self-usable for lifelong learning. For the employees of the
Travelodge, use of an online source of material is beneficial for gaining the
knowledge regarding the resources and their optimum utilisation so as to achieve the
set goals and objectives and make the positive impression on the higher level of
authorities (Punt et al., 2016). For me as well it will act as the key resources for the
identification of the current trends and the desire of the people so as to update the
services of the Travelodge.

1.3 BENEFITS OF THE SELF-MANAGED LEARNING WITH PERSPECTIVE OF
ORGANISATION AS WELL AS THE INDIVIDUAL’S PERSPECTIVE
Benefits to individual
Starting at the individual level, self-managed learning helps in the creation of the
values among individuals as well as helps me in the attainment of the self-
actualisation level in both aspects i.e. personal and professional aspects. Learning
also brings out the constant feeling related to the development which helps in getting
the overall personality development which further helps in achieving the higher
position in the hotel (Cunningham and Bennett, 2017). By self-managed learning
techniques, there is a boost in my confidence level and I was able to attain the job
satisfaction. Self-managed learning helped me in recognising my weakness along
with the solution to overcome it. By employing the self-managed learning, I acquired
new skills and enhanced the existing ones which helped me to work in the more
effective and efficient way (Cunningham and Bennett, 2017). The techniques of self-
managed learning provide the platform to the individuals to come up with their ideas
and present it freely in front of everyone and also helps in the goal setting and
assessment of the targets so as to know where they lack.
Benefits to Travelodge
The primary benefit of self-managed learning is to inculcate the habit of learning in
the employees as the learning for anyone learning is the key to success. It also helps
in creating the better work environment for the employees in the hotel as they get to
develop the understanding on working effectively and efficiently in Travelodge which
also helped in the reduction of the staff turnover (Ansoff et al., 2019). SML is also
beneficial for the improvement of the quality of the work of the employees of the
hotel by increasing their knowledge and the expertise level (Ansoff et al., 2019).
For an example: In Travelodge, all the employees do not speak English, so they
came up with the self-learning centre so as to make the employees learn English on
their own. The centre created contains the books, video lectures, training modules
etc. (Ansoff et al., 2019).
