Introduction
Professional development is the integral part of every hotel organization in order to gain high
productivity and provide best services to the customers. Moreover, it is found that hospitality
organizations of UK are trying to update their service levels for which skills, competences
and various learning approaches needs to be developed for creating a professional
development plan. This study has discussed about on-going professional development plan
and self-learning approaches of a well-known hotel organization of UK, JW Marriot
Grosvenor House Hotel that is located in London. This hotel organization is found to have
opened in 1929 in the area of Mayfair in London (marriott.com, 2019). Moreover, the main
aim of the study is to improve the skills and learning techniques of new and existing
employees in order to improve the service level of organization. The expectations of the
employer of the organizations related to professional skills and standards are provided in the
study.

Professional development is the on-going process for developing the learning as well as
practical skills of the employees. In JW Marriot Grosvenor House Hotel, the employers
require to develop on-going development plan for gaining the mentioned benefits from
employees in the hotel business:

Improve efficiency and existing skills: As mentioned by (), in the age of competition,
employers are in search of cutting costs in providing training to the employees. Hence, offer
and promotion of professional development options can show the staffs and other operating
workers that employers care for their career progression. Moreover, in JW Marriot hotel,
employers and HR manager can increase the talent of the employees by creating a
development program which would help in improving the stakeholder figure in the hotel.
Being a 5 star hotel, the hotel managers require to spend more time on development of skills

organization matters a lot because business class guests and high-class tourists are found
to book their accommodation in this hotel.
Hence, development of new skills such as problem solving skills and dealing with cross
cultural environment plays an important role. Hence, it can be said that developing skills of
every employees can help in presenting a friendly and familiar culture in the hotel
organization.
Develop confidence and credibility: It is found that in every single day, staffs have to face
new types of guests in their hotel; hence, training and developing their self-management
skills continuously can help in boosting their confidence level. Moreover, this would help in
understanding the demands of variable customers that would enhance the productivity level
as well. At this, Neupane (2015) commented that on-going developmental plan enable to
build credibility as they would be able to gain new skill sets along with certificates which
would be important for their career development.
Increase retention and review personal development: Professional development of the
organization is important for enhancing the employee retention strategy. Life-long learning
process helps employees to gain new experience and also aids them in getting engaged

I have applied for the job role of talent acquisition manager of JW Mariott Grosvenor
House hotel. I have previously worked as a talent acquisition manager of Hilton hotel for 2
year. I have observed that my communication skill has been developed by working as a
talent acquisition manager. I was able to recruit talented staffs for the organization that were
able to bring innovation to the organisation. Effective communication skill plays a key role in
improving the productivity of the organisation (Deng, 2017). My communication skill has
also helped to drive talented candidates for a specific job role. I have also observed that I
can easily motivate my subordinates. I have developed my motivational skills by working in
that organisation. Motivation is beneficial for increasing employee morale so that their
performance level can also be increased. It is stated that the motivational skill is one of the
most important concept in managing the employees of an organisation (Rasheed et al.,
2016).
I have been able to get a job done by motivating and communicating with the employees. I
have also made decision quickly on challenging situation. I have observed that I can be
able to keep calm in challenging situation and develop strategies plans for coping up with
such situation. This has helped me to lead the employees towards success. I was able to
achieve employee trust by helping them in such risky situations. I have also developed
conflict resolution skills. Conflicts may arise in any workplace but it is very important to
handle conflicts carefully (Currie et al., 2017). Conflicts leave a negative impact on the
business operation of an organisation. In the previous workplace, I have faced issues of
conflicts that were caused by communication gap among employees.
The conflict was affecting the corporate image of Hilton hotel, as the service quality of the
organisation was stagnating. I listened to the problems of employees and resolved it quickly
by ensuring enough communication among them. Thus, it can be stated that my conflict
resolution skills has been developed. I have also gained experience in team development,
leadership and recruitment analysis skills. I have also developed technical skills, as I
have to perform social an mobile recruitment. The social and mobile recruitment needs to be
performed through online job portals so that my skills have helped me to perform such job
duties.

Kolb’s learning cycle is one of the most important learning theory that can be used for
personal and professional development. There are some other theories and approaches that
help to develop personal skills. The theories are discussed below:
Kolb’s earning cycle
This theory works on two different levels and four stages of learning. In the words of Smith
(2016) the theory is mainly concerned on the learner’s cognitive process of learning. This
learning process includes acquisition of such concepts that can be applicable in different
situations. According to this theory, learning is process where experience is transformed to
knowledge. The four stages of this learning cycle include concrete experience, observation
of new experience, conceptualisation and experimentation. The learning process becomes
effective when the leaner passes through these four stages.
Behavioural theories and approaches:
The behavioural learning theories refer to the change of occurrence rates. In the words of
Anderson (2016), learning can be gained by reinforcing consequences. Motivation plays a
key role in evaluating the process, which are goal directed. This theory also covers the
behavioural responses to the stimuli of environment.
Cognitive theory for learning
This theory refers to the knowledge acquisition process, mental structure formation and

action plans. The SMART goal is beneficial for achieving any objective within a given
timeframe. I have already worked in a hospitality organisation and developed my personal
skills. However, I will require developing my skills more so that I can be able to address the
current and future demands of the hospitality sector.
Specific: I need to develop my technical skills. In the recent era, technology is being
changed day by day so that I will need to learn new techniques for performing the
recruitment process through online efficiently.
Measurable: The goal is measurable as I will be able to develop my skills by taking different
trainings and online courses. I will be successful if i attend conferences at least once in a
month
Attainable: I will accomplish my goals by communicating with the trainer and attending
classes regularly. I will start studying different materials for understanding the online
recruitment process and I will learn how to handle online interview efficiently.
Relevant: I have applied for the job role of talent acquisition manager at JW Mariott
Grosvenor House hotel so that development of this skill will help me to perform better. I will
also be able to hire talented candidates for the organisation.
Time-bound: have set the time frame two month. My training will be over within two
months. I already have gained knowledge on the online recruitment process so that it will
take very less time to develop the skill.
The developmental and behavioural learning theory will be beneficial for developing my
skills. The developmental theory refers to five stages such as assimilation, accommodation,

role so that they can be bale to bring new innovative ideas in the organisation. In this way,
