INTRODUCTION
Career Development relates to the series of activities which helps in the growth and
development of an individual's career (Fraser, 2016). It generally refers to the management of an
individual's career in intra organisational or inter organisational scenarios. The following
assignment will also make its focus on the development of career in the files of Food and
Beverage Manager. In addition to this, the following assignment will also make its focus on the
development of career and will reflect on the viewpoints of other authors in relation to provide a
specific meaning of career development of an individual. The description of the role in the
industry will also be provided in this assignment. Moreover, setting of goals both long term as
well as short term and identification of goal setting theory will be done to make proper
development in the career of an individual.
MAIN BODY
My Career
I started my career just after three months of completing my graduation in Dietetics, in
the filed of Food Service Management. In starting, it was not possible for me to find out a good
job in this field, as I was a fresher and also lacking in practical knowledge so I thought of starting
it from some short level and then I gave my interview in some local restaurant. With the help of
this, it was possible for to have some knowledge about the management of food in hotels and
restaurants. So in order to develop this knowledge I started to work under the Food and Beverage
Manager of that Hotel and worked under him for 18 months and have proper knowledge about
the works, duties, roles and responsibilities of Food and Beverage Manager. This helped me a lot
in making a good start to my career from a good restaurant and good job that could help me in
developing my career and also in managing my career.
So after getting a little bit experienced from my first job about what are the duties and
roles and responsibilities of Food and Beverage Manager, I decided to change the job and opt for
something better. Than I saw the advertisement of Food and Beverage Manager's vacant post in
an article in newspaper stating the requirement of candidate for this post. So I made my mind to
get this job and gave their interview for this post and also got selected. However, it was a
surprising experience for me as I did not expected to be selected for this job post with this much
experience only. But however, I started the job which was much different from that of earlier. It

may be possible that this difference is because of size and operations of the organisation. So this
organisation was the starting point from where the development of my career started for the very
first time in think off.
The definition of career, career development and career management is different for
different people and also from the perspectives of different authors. As in accordance with
SUSAN M. HEATHFIELD, 2019, it has been said that career development could be sure with
the help of availing the opportunities available to an individual. But is also important to have
proper concentration and exploration by an individual in search of opportunities so that the
development in the career could be made. Without handwork and practise, it is not possible to
achieve good career growth and development in the life (Kasemsap, 2019). For the management
of career by an individual, it is also important for them to have proper knowledge about the ways
on which an individual is going and should also set clear goals and objectives for the growth and
development and proper management of career of an individual.
According to MEGAN DENNENY, 2016, with the help of setting proper milestones and
deliverables, it will also be possible to know about the performance of own so that the needed
rectifications and improvements could be made in the progress work in relation to career
development. In relation to the perspectives explained by these two authors, the experiences and
findings are shared, the type of experiences that had and are different from each other. But the
application of setting clear aims and objectives by an individual will be helpful for making
improvement in the career growth and development of the individual (Mackay, 2017). As from
my perspective, this statement is true as with the help of setting clear aims and objectives, I will
be able to know about the proper direction and the way in which I want to go. In case of any
deviation, it will also be known that where it is and how it can be improved so this perspective is
good and acceptable. However, there are also some improvements needed in the perspective of
this author as well because mere setting goals and objectives is not enough but setting up time
limits for the achievement of goals and objectives is also important that could help in the growth
and development of the career and achievement of goals and objectives within the specified time
limit. Self evaluation is also important in career development as with the help of this, an
individual will be able to assess himself. Doing my own self evaluation will help me in knowing
about my own current strengths and weaknesses so that I could work upon both the strengths and

weaknesses as well. I will work for making strengths more stronger and will work for eradicating
the weaknesses in order to make ensure about proper and efficient growth in the career.
The current organisation in which I am working is The Hotel Savoy and on the post of
Food and Beverage Manager. I feel myself luck to get this kind of work experiences which I may
ever come across again in my career. This has been made possible with the help of my
experiences and because of my Bachelor's Degree in Food Service Management.
