The housekeeping refers to that department of a hotel which is associated with
cleanliness and maintaining aesthetic atmosphere for guests and staff to feel comfortable. This
department plays an important role in success of a hotel (Petch, Cook and Miller, 2013). They
are associated with cleaning of rooms and lobby which is an essential task.
The health and safety of customers is prime motive undertaken by management at hotels
and restaurants so as to build an image and help customers feel comfortable (Murray and et.al.,
2012). The health and safety measures needs to be undertaken by the housekeeping department
which helps provide an atmosphere of germ free and healthy. These health and safety measures
differers from hotel to hotel and the strictness of management. These measures are necessary to
be implemented by housekeeping members in a hotel (Gray and Liguori, 2013). The various
steps taken to keep the surroundings clean by housekeeping personnel involve:
Clean Rooms:
Hotel rooms are one of the sources of revenue which needs to be proper and clean. The
cleanliness and hygiene of rooms are of utmost important which is a major job of housekeeping
department (Stacey and et.al., 2011). Many new techniques and equipments are used by
housekeeping staff to clean specific areas of rooms so as to maintain health and hygiene. The
management of hotel is responsible for adopting new technology for cleaning rooms so as to
reduce time and cost involved.
Laundry:
Another department under the housekeeping staff is providing laundry services to guests
visiting hotel. It includes hotel linen as well as guests clothing which needs to be cleaned using
proper care and measure. Now a days, hotels uses advanced technique for the purpose of
cleaning laundry (Gilmore, Savell and Collin, 2011). This techniques is known as xeros bead
cleaning which is an eco-friendly machine which reduces the use of water.
Managing Linen:
The housekeeping staff is responsible for changing linen for both beds and bath so as to
ensure hygiene for guests (Walker, 2012). The RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
technology is used to manage stock of linen which if less needs to be purchased immediately.

Hotels are ensuring health and safety measures by adopting organic linen products made from
bamboo,jute and paper which is easily recyclable (Jones, 2008).
Controlling Pests:
The housekeeping department of hotel needs to control pests such as cockroach, lizards,
insects, flies and rats etc. to ensure hygiene inside room as well as all over hotel areas. The
housekeeping staff needs to check on regular basis and ensures timely sprays, fogging, and
fumigation for controlling pests (Eisenberg and Levanon, 2013). It is a challenging task
performed by housekeeping department to ensure level of hygiene and safety of guests.
Supplies of essentials:
Every hotel needs to provide essential requisites for guests such as bath amenities,
complementary Wi-Fi services and television facility which should be proper and useable. The
housekeeping people checks the working of TV and Wi-Fi services being provided as well as
timely changing of bath amenities is taken care (Casado, 2011).
Thus to conclude though housekeeping department is least appreciated forms the most vital part
of any hotel in maintaining health and hygiene of customers and guests visiting the hotel
(Raghubalan and Raghubalan, 2009).
