Introduction
Jakob Nielsen and Rolf Molich developed a set of guideline consisting of 10 principles in order
to design an effective user interface for the website or web-application to fulfil all the
requirements of the user. It has great significance over the development of the interactive design
for various systems, UI and other applications. These principles have been used by multiple
companies and industries both small as well as large for the development of an interactive
system for their users (Wong, 2019). It has been implemented for the evaluation of website for
Hoyts Cinemas in this report.

Task 1
Evaluation of website
Here, all the principles stated by Nielsen and Moloch has been utilized for the evaluation of the
website for the “Hoyts Cinemas” in order to identify the errors in the current website and their
remediation.
1. Consistent design and standards
 Issue: Different color for “Movie Info” button on different screens. The incorrect font size
on the different pages.
 Location: Recommended page, Movie page, Rewards page and Terms & Conditions page.
 Problem due to identified issue: Variation in color and design of “Movie Info” button on
different pages of the website may generate confusion for the user. Also, font size and layout
is different on different pages such as Rewards page and Terms & Conditions page due to
which it failed to maintain consistency according to the Heuristic principles for the user
interface (Albrecht, 2018).
 Significance: Significant
 Remediation: All the buttons used within the website must be of the same colour, font and
size.

2. Flexibility and efficiency of use
 Issue: Missing button for “Register Now” and click on the image of the movie doesn’t go
anywhere.
 Location: Login/Sign Up page, Recommended page, Movie page
 Problem due to identified issue: On the login/sign up page, a button for “Register Now” is
unavailable which might cause errors for new user and they don’t use the link for
registration. Also, images for the movies failed to link it with the respective movie and failed
to maintain flexibility and efficiency to use according to the Heuristic principles for the user
interface (Wozniak-Semeniuk, 2018).
 Significance: Low

 Remediation: Implementation of a button for “Register Now” for new users and linking of
images for movies with their respective movie page.

3. Freedom and user control
 Issue: No “Back” or “Undo” button on the screen.
 Location: Login page, Registration page and Membership selection page.
 Problem due to identified issue: There is no “Back” or “Undo” button available on multiple
screens of the website such as Login page, Registration page, Membership selection page and
others due to which user cannot go back to the previous screen to make the change in wrong
selection and failed to provide freedom & control to user according to Heuristic principle.
 Significance: Significant

 Remediation: Implementing the “Back” button to go back to the previous page for users.

4. Matching of the system with the real world
 Issue: User redirected to payment page without registration or log in to his/her account and
there is no option to explain what “CVV” mean for the users.
 Location: Payment page
 Problem due to identified issue: Any user can make payment for the movie ticket without
registration or log in to his/her account which may produce an error and influence the
customer trust that his/her payment will get linked with his/her correct account. Also, there is
no option available to explain what “CVV” means for the user if he/she don’t understand
here to find CVV on his/her card and failed to match the system with real-world according to
Heuristic principle.
 Significance: Significant
 Remediation: User must be redirected to the login or register himself before payment and
implementing icon for “CVV” explanation on the payment page.

5. Visibility of system
 Issue: Confirmation or dialogue screen to confirm from a user that he/she wants to go ahead
with the process or cancel it is unavailable.
 Location: Seat selection page, Login/Sign Up page, Payment page and others.
 Problem due to identified issue: There is no option to abort the process once the user clicks
on the “Continue” button and can’t go back to the previous page to change the selection and
he/she needs to close the process and start the complete process again from beginning due to
which it failed to provide visibility to system according to Heuristic principle for user
interface (Duggirala, 2016).
 Significance: Significant
 Remediation: Implementation of “Confirmation” page to confirm the action from the user if
he/she wish to continue or go back to make any change.

6. Error prevention approach
 Issue: Incorrect email address, incorrect name and card number entered by the user are also
accepted by system.
 Location: Payment page
 Problem due to identified issue: Incorrect information entered by the user during payment
may result in payment failure or linking of payment and booking details with an incorrect
account as due to which it failed to provide error prevention approach for users according to
Heuristic principle for the user interface.
 Significance: Significant
 Remediation: Implementation of error prevention approach using proper coding and input
box to allow proper format which validates entered information before proceeding to next

step and inform the user to correct the information in case of wrong information or word
entered by the user.

7. Authentic & minimalist design
 Issue: Unwanted and huge information available which is not required for the user.
 Location: Menu page, Help & Contact Us page
 Problem due to identified issue: Lots of information showing on both the pages which are
not required may produce confusion for different users where to go and what to select due to
which many users start hesitating to go on both the pages, as a result, it failed to develop an
authentic & minimalist design according to Heuristic principle for the user interface (Pande,
2018).
 Significance: Low
 Remediation: Removal of unwanted information and descriptions from both the pages and
implementation of attractive list or images for that information to provide authentic &
minimalistic design for the website.

8. Recovery from errors
 Issue: Entered email address or user name and password is not validated before proceeding
to sign in.
 Location: Login page
 Problem due to identified issue: Entered information by user for login to his/her account
not validated before proceeding to “Sign In” which may produce errors with user name or
email address entered by user and may failed to recognize correct information to be used

while log in to his/her account, as a result, it failed to provide recovery from error mechanism
according to heuristic principles.
 Significance: Low
 Remediation: Implementation of validation and “Info” in front of the input box to explain
the details of the information which needs to be entered in that particular box. It helps the
user to prevent making errors at an early stage.

9. Recognition rather than recall
 Issue: Suggestion or Auto-fill option is unavailable.
 Location: Help and Contact us page
 Problem due to identified issue: the Designed system does not have a suggestion or auto-fill
mechanism to help users with their search and provide multiple options from which user can
select the words or sentence they are looking for is not available. User needs to type each and
everything completely to search due to which it failed to follow recognition rather than recall
principle according to Heuristics.
 Significance: Low
 Remediation: Implementation of “Suggestions” using keywords for the user to help them
with their search.
