FY021 - Task Three - HR – Motivation
Motivational Theory-
As being the assistant HR of Jack stores, this report consists of the compilation of opinions on
management system over which the theories of motivation could be the best and most
appropriate opinion for the upcoming branches of Jack stores which are going to be launched
soon. In this report the analysis and evaluation of the two best suitable theories of motivation for
Jack stores shall be discussed. The advantage and disadvantage of the theories of motivation will
also be discussed in this report and which motivation theory is appropriate for Jack stores will be
recommended.
What is motivation?
Motivation can be said to be the reason or reasons for behaving or working in a specific way.
Motivation can be classified into two types which are as extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation is the outer forces or opinions that make you behave in a specific way.
Intrinsic motivation can be said to be the inner desire of an individual. Example of an intrinsic
motivation is the feeling of hunger and the desire to eat food. An example of extrinsic motivation
can be taken as the changing of job. Changing of job is regarded as extrinsic motivation since no
one would like to change a job and again settle themselves in a new environment. This is done
only in two conditions that are if the new job pays higher than the old one or the individual is
forced by external motivation (Akhmetshin et al. 2018, pp.352-361).
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory from psychology which was proposed by Abraham
Maslow during the year 1943. He proposed this theory in paper of psychological review of “A
Theory of Human Motivation” that states in order to make motivation happen at next level in an
individual then it is must that each level should be satisfied internally (Lee, J.M. and Hanna,
S.D., 2015, pp.5-28).

Needs are:
(i) Social requirements
(ii) Physiological requirements
(iii) Actualization of one’s self
(iv) Security and safety requirements
(v) Esteem requirements.
To explain this theory giving a real life example is if an individual does not have a
job to earn their livelihood then his basic needs are not fulfilled then this need of an
individual will dominate his other needs unless this needs get fulfilled that individual
will not be motivated but if this if fulfilled then that individual would get motivated
(Bouzenita and Boulanouar 2016, pp.18-54).
Application of the Theory:
The store assistants of the stores must be given weekly payments which would fulfill their needs
psychologically. Jack stores must provide their employees with contract of employment that

would fulfill their motivational needs of safety (Fallatah and Syed 2018, pp. 19-59). In order to
satisfy the health safety needs the Jack stores can start providing a scheme of health and safety
which would give security sense to its employees. In order to fulfill the social needs of the
employees some events should be held and rewarding to the staff on their work must be done by
the Jack stores. This will in turn motivate the staff of Jack stores. Clothing of supervisor must be
better than the labors. The manager of the store will get motivated if mangers self-actualization
needs are fulfilled so the managers of the stores must be given good amount of authority and
must be allowed to take at least minor decisions of the stores (Jonas 2016, pp.105-117).
Advantages of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:
This theory is very simple to be understood by an individual.
This theory totally accounts the nature of human being.
This theory makes relevance to all the types of motivational needs of human (Liu and Jie
2017, pp.1-4).
Disadvantages Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
This will not be wrong to say that every human being does not think in the same manner
so this theory does not fully satisfies the motivational needs of exactly every human.
Herzberg two factor theory
This theory was proposed by Frederick Herzberg which states that there some factors in the work
place that make the employees satisfied or dissatisfied and these factors occur independently. He
stated that the hygiene factors and motivational factors will make the employee stay in the job
(Alshmemri et al. 2017, pp.12-16).

Application of theory:
The company should provide some policies and procedures to the employees that can guide and
the employees must be paid regularly and they should given some discount if they purchase
things from the stores they are working in. This will encourage the hygiene factor and motivate
the employees and keep their motivational value (Alfayad and Arif 2017, pp.150-156).
Advantages
Following this theory companies can focus over problems of employees.
According to this theory money should be treated secondary by the firm.
Disadvantages
This theory does not emphasize on external factors.
This theory can be taken as only subjective.

Conclusion
The Jack store would be benefitted if effective theory is applied. It is recommended that the store
should apply the Maslow’s theory of needs since it’s simple and convenient to use and somewhat
fulfills the motivational needs of employees.
