Parental discrimination
Discrimination based on race, color and caste is a common thing in today’s work
culture. The interviewer had doubts with Lockwood, as she was a mother. Lockwood was
fired from PNS, though she achieved her sales target, as she had to reschedule a meeting with
her client, as her daughter was sick one morning. This is not a case of discrimination based
on sex as she was not paid less than other male employees with same qualification but
because she had a child (Decenzo et al., 2016). Hence, parental discrimination was the
grounds for this complaint instead of a federally protected class.
Avoiding the problem
Professional Neurological Services could have easily avoided the problem by not
discriminating its employees against anything. Lockwood had overachieved her sales target
and worked hard. Discrimination only brings down the self-esteem of the employees, which
affects the business. PNS lost its one of the best employees and lost its reputation.

Some of the ways to cut down HR costs can be to minimize employee turnover, cross
training employees, sharing of jobs within departments or employees, critical thinking before
hiring new employees and go paperless (IGWE et al.,2014). I would have communicated first
with the employees before making changes and why it is necessary and be thorough in the
compensation.
Avoiding discrimination
The organizations can avoid discrimination by educating its employees about
discrimination, developing an environment that prohibits discrimination, respecting each

other’s differences, raising a voice against any unprofessional behavior and anti-
discriminatory policies in compliance with the business laws of the country. (Nkomo &
Hoobler, 2014). By following these principles, organizations can easily develop a healthy
working environment.
