INTRODUCTION
Human resource refers to all those persons who perform different activities in an
organisation. It is department in a firm that perform the activity of recruitment, selection,
orientation, training and development etc. It manage all the resources related to employee
engagement and development. Human resource are the important capital for an organisation who
contribute in achieving organisational goals and objectives. Service industry in hospitality sector
is a broad concept which includes the activity of transportation, event planning, lodging,
housekeeping, kitchen workers and other services. This report is based on SOFITEL Hotel which
was founded in 1964. Its headquarter is located in Paris, France. It is a chain of luxury hotels
which cover global area for providing their services. In this report there is a discussion about role
and purpose of HRM and HR plan to analyse supply and demand for service industry. Different
laws will discuss who affect management of HR. apart from this, job description, person
specification and selection process will discuss. At last, contribution of training and development
for effective operation will discuss.

Selection is process of choosing a right candidate from large number of applicants for a
specific job position (Bratton and Gold, 2017). This process is done by the human resource
manage of SOFITEL Hotel. It recruit candidates for a vacant position where people are applied
for the job and then they select best suitable candidate who fill the requirement of job such as
qualifications, knowledge, skills and other attributes. Selection may be differ in different
organisations.

Employment Interview- This is the first step of selection process of SOFITEL hotel. In
this process, one to one interview is conduct to all applicants for knowing them better. It helps to

step, interviewer can take right decision to select suitable candidates for the next round.
Reference Checking- In this process, interviewer evaluate and verify the experience and

behaviour and attitude of applicants both in personal and professional life.
Medical Examination- After verifying references, the next next step is medical
examination. In this process, interviewer examine the mental and physical fitness of candidate

employees who have to perform different work (Cascio, 2014). So, it is necessary for people that

Selection Process of Hilton Hotel
Selection process of Hilton Hotel is as follows:-
Pre placement presentation- Hilton Hotel select the candidates from campus placement.
Firstly, they take presentation of students in which they analyse communication skills and
knowledge of candidates (Jackson, Schuler and Jiang, 2014).
Group Discussion- Those person who qualify in presentation round are select for group
discussion. In this process, a topic is given to a group of 6-8 person in which they discuss their
opinion.
Preliminary Interview- Selected candidates are qualify to give interview which is
conduct in campus office by HR executive of Hilton Hotel.
Final Interview- In this process, the interview is taken in corporate office of Hilton Hotel
by HR manager.
Offer Letter- This is the last process of selection in Hilton Hotel. In this process, offer
letter is given to those candidates who are selected in final interview.
Conclusion
From the above discussion it is clear that there are different types of selection process in
different organisations which are helps to select best candidate for vacant position in hospitality
business. Selection process is depends on their way of selection by which they get suitable
candidate with more qualification and attributes.

4.1 Contribution of Training and Development Activities to Effective Operations
Training and development is an important part of development of employees in
organisation. It is an activity which improve the performance of employees and individual. It
provide an opportunity in which employees can develop their skills and knowledge as per
requirement of job (The Importance of Training & Development in the Hospitality Industry,
2018). It is a short time process which focuses on current activities. SOFITEL Hotel provide
training to their staff members for the purpose of improving their performance for a specific job
position.
Development is a long term process which increase conceptual and theoretical knowledge
of both employer and employees (Nieves, Quintana and Osorio, 2014). It deals with overall
growth of an organisation. It is a career oriented activity which focuses on future aspects. In

development, employees are motivated by self assessment and prepare to self for future
challenges. Contribution of training and development is essential in SOFITEL Hotel for
effective performance, it can be understood by following points:-
Improve Employee Performance- Training and development is important for hospitality
business because it helps to improve performance of employees. In training program employees
learn more about their job and make coordination with their superior and team members. In
SOFITEL Hotel, training is provided to new joinees in which they get practical knowledge about
task and know the working environment (Prayag and Hosany, 2015). When employees are
properly trained and developed then they give contribution in effective performance in SOFITEL
Hotel.
Developing Skills- Training and development program is conducted for the purpose of
developing the skills and knowledge of employees. It is beneficial for SOFITEL Hotel because
when employees learn more they perform different activities and helps in achieving
organisational goals and objectives in effective and efficient manner.
Reduce Turnover- When employees are well trained in organisation then they perform
better work in organisation and get reward for their effective performance. When employees get
reward either in monetary or non-monetary terms then they feel motivated. This ultimately helps
to reducing employee turnover. Employees retain long term in SOFITEL Hotel and perform their
activities effectively.
Enhance Company Reputation- Contribution of training and development is beneficial
