INTRODUCTION
Human resource management refers to a strategic approach which is used to manage staff
members of an organization in more effective as well as efficient manner to achieve desired
goals properly. It includes making appropriate strategies to allocate required tasks to employees
as per their field of expertise to gain competitive advantage successfully. The present report is
based on Oak Cash and Carry Ltd that provides services in bulk for retailers, caterers, offices, off
licenses, newsagents and other local business. It includes wide range of products including foods
and beverages to their customers (Alfes and et. al., 2013). This assignment will focus on
definition of HRM and recent history of HRM development along with major significant
concepts. It also involves roles of HRM director and major activities of same department.
TASK
1. Human resource management
Human resource management can be described as strategic techniques for carrying out
overall management of employees working in organization to attain goals or objectives
successfully. It includes the criteria of establishing more effective as well as efficient policies to
manage workers in terms of providing desired tasks to them according to their specialized areas
so that they can perform appropriately. Moreover, it will facilitate to gain better outcomes on
regular basis which results into improving productivity as well as profitability of given
organization. People are more capable in their specialized field and work comfortably and
generate better outcomes which are beneficial for company.
Human resource management plays an important role to maintain an appropriate working
environment of an organization so that employees can perform more effectively to achieve
desired target (Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). It include to make better HR policies in order to
manage staff members properly so that goals of business can be attained successfully. In terms of
Oak Cash and Carry Ltd, it is necessary to organize an appropriate HR department so that
creation and implementing effective strategies governing workers along with establishing
healthy relationship of work place with people. Additionally, they build more effective as well as
efficient policies, processes and practices for employees & organization in order to achieve their
business goals successfully which facilitate to attain growth properly.

competitors. Human resource is the term basically used for the management of the people in the
organization. It is process under which employee are appointed, trained, compensate and develop
policies in order to retain them. The main aim of HRM is to enhance the productivity of the
business in order to effective or optimum utilisation of the employees. The general mission of
human resource is to acquire, retain the talent in the organization so that they contribute in the
development of the establishment (Bratton and Gold, 2017).
2. Recent account of development of HRM in an organization including major concepts
HRM is also known as personnel management which consists of all major activities that
are undertaken by an organization to make sure that effective usage of employees towards
gaining desired goals and targets is being done. The company mainly concentrate on people and
its people management. It involves practices which assist company in effectively deal with its
people during various phases of employment cycle, such as staffing, pre hiring and post hiring.
The recent development of human resource management is involves betterment in employees
payroll, management and appraisal and also perform all functions effectively. Second National Commission on labor – It was established on 15 October 1999 in which
all the disputes are settled through negotiation and other effective alternative method of
conflict resolution appear such as arbitration and mediation. This concept is mainly used
in the form where they are providing equal rights and opportunities to their workers
regarding policies or strategies. Positive attitudes and behavior of employees Recently, HRM department is
responsible for developing positive attitude among employees through which they are
planning to reach their desired goals and targets in an effective manner (Brewster and
Hegewisch, 2017). An organization also analyzing and evaluating their workers behavior
towards work or task in a better manner. Change in structure: Earlier, organizations followed hierarchical structure in their
working style. But now participative management style is used by most of the
organization which help in making appropriate decision for motivating employees
towards doing effective work. It is that concept which is used by Oak cash and carry in

policies in order to provide deserving and fair compensation to employees according to their

provide fair remuneration to workers along with monthly incentives which make them loyal for
the firm and perform well in future (Jackson, Schuler and Jiang, 2014).
Retention of Employees – The employees skip jobs from organisation if anything is not

plan put in the file for make appropriate decision. Human resource manager are liable for
managing and controlling all data and information that are associated with employee payroll,
salary and financial statement. This activity of HRM department helps in maintaining all existing
and previous workers records and data in proper manner.
Health and Safety of Employees – The human resource department are also responsible
for health and safety of their employees so they are doing work in healthy environment (Purce,
2014). The HR managers are required to review the practices and protocol of operation in which
they are focus on hazard and damage. Employees have right to work in safe and peaceful
environment and it must have open door to HR management for discussing about any situation
creating concern by the workforce. The human resource department conduct all activities related
to health and safety within Oak Cash and carry so that their employees feel and safe and better
which reduces the absentees.
Performance Appraisal – In an organization, HRM department provide appraisal of an
employees performances so that it will assist in enhancing their motivation towards doing work
or activity in better manner. Performance appraisal is the procedure which decides that how

targets. HRM division is responsible for workers appraisal because they are evaluating their all
work as per their skills and knowledge. HR division plays an essential role in implementing and
designing performance appraisals. The human resource teams are act as a mediator among
functional heads or reviewing authorities and the employees (Renwick, Redman and Maguire,
2013). The HR team is liable for smooth execution of appraisal process. For doing this, they are
analyzing all workers strength or weakness so they can use at specific situation for the welfare of
the company.

be defined as strategies techniques for carrying out overall management of employees working in
organization for gaining desired goals or objectives. The HRM department is also responsible for
