INTRODUCTION
The human resource management can be described as the operation which is carried out
in the business organisations to improve the performance level of the workers in effective
manner. The scope of human resource is considered to be very wide and consists of functions
like planning, job analysis design, recruitment and selection, orientation and induction, training
and development, performance appraisal, etc. The present report is based on the experiences I
had while working for McKinsey and Company in Canada as a intern. I had a great experience
working there as it helped me to understand the importance of human resource for a successful
and smooth flow of the company in the market. The report will carry the brief study in context of
human resource practices in the workplace, key demographics and employee concerns etc.
Human Resource Management
It can be defined as one of the essential strategic approach applied for the purpose of
effective management of people in the organisation that will eventually assist the business in
gaining competitive advantage. The HRM is the movement which was started in the early 20th
century when the researchers were focusing on creating the business values with the help of
strategic management of the workforce. At starting it was forced by the transactional works like
payroll and benefit administration but because of globalisation taken place in the market the
scenario of HR functioning has completely changed (Collings, Wood & Szamosi, (2018)). Now
it focuses on the strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisition, talent management, labour
relations, diversity and lowering employee turnover rate. While working in the company I have
seen the functioning of HRM very closely and felt the importance of this department in
managing the workforce effectively. It has become more competitive and encourage the officials
to bring something innovative to accomplish the desired objectives effectively.
Application To The Workplace
Human resource management is responsible to carry several practices within an
organisation from which four are described as follows:
Providing security to employees: The basic process HRM carries out is to provide
employment security. As, it helps in keeping the workforce motivated and draw out

Hiring the right people: The another crucial practice is to conduct selective hiring by
selecting the employees who add value to the organisation. It has been seen in many
researches that the difference between the an average employee and good perfromer
employee can be of 400% and selecting the right one will result in building compettive
advantage in the market.
Fair and performance based compensation: It involves giving compensation to the
employees on the basis of their performance level and also results in keeping them
motivated to retain them for the long duration. As, a employee it feels good and satisfied
because the efforts made are being recognised (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright,
(2017)).
Training in relevant skills: This HR practice provides suitable training to the employees
to improve their efficiency level and to make them feel important within the organisation.
As a employee it help in increasing the abilities and motivates one to contribute more
efforts in effective manner.
Key Demographics and Employee Concerns
The issues that arise in the workplace because of demographics and employee concerns
are as follows:
Acceptance and respect: A successful workplace requires fundamental values that
involves giving respect to each other within the organisation. The issue generating with
the lack of acceptance of the diverse culture may result in bringing conflicts with in the
organisation and may result in causing loss.
Accommodation of beliefs: diversified beliefs may lead in making the working
environment challenging, so it is important for the employees to not to impose their
beliefs on the other workers to eradicate the situation of conflicts.
Gender equality: It is one of the serious issue which is common at the workplace and
as, people choose men over women. The employers are required to prevent the gender
discrimination and maintain the equality within the company in context of salary,
promotions and benefits.

living expense was very high. My company provided me with the accommodation allowances
which was really helpful for me to sustain in effective manner.

From the above given report it can be concluded that human resource management has a
very important role in managing the smooth work for any organisation. The report has briefly
explained the importance of HRM, its practices within the workplace and the issues faced by the
company due to demographics factors. In last I have explained the importance of reasonable
accommodation facility provided by the organisation.
