Introduction
Human Resource is considered as the backbone of the company which helps
the company in terms of resourcing the talent and skill for the organisation. The
organisation faces difficulties to maintain the staff without a human resource
manager. Human resource manager plays a vital role in maintaining the staff of the
company. Each and every organisation appoints the human resource manager who
can easily maintain the staff of the company. There are many strength and
weakness that a human resources manager of the company can have. In this report,
TESCO PLC has been taken into consideration to analyse the role of human
resource manager of the company. Tesco is a British Multinational groceries and
general retailer; it was established in 1919. It is the third largest retailer in the world
which earned the high gross revenue. It has shops in seven countries across
Europe, and Asia with the 4,76,000 workforce (Tesco, 2018).
In this report, discussion is made on the role of human resource management
in maintaining the resources of Tesco. In the beginning of the report, the function of
human resources management will be discussed. After that strength and weakness
of Human resources management of Tesco will be discussed. In the end of the
report, the role of Human resources in providing the talent and skill will be analysed.
Functions of Human Resource Management
Managing employee relations
Human resource managers are the pillar of Tesco. Employee’s relation is very
essential for the company and it is one of the functions of Human resource
managers of the company. They build the healthy relation with the employees by
providing them the efficient salary and compensation. They also organise the events
and activities which helps to know about the personal and professional level. Healthy
relation between the employees helps to influence the employee for staying with the
company for long time (Albrecht, Bakker, Gruman, Macey, and Saks, 2015).

It is the major role of human resource in resourcing an organisation. Human
resource manager of Tesco organises the recruitment and selection process to
appoint the employee. The effective process of selection helps the company to
appoint the talented and highly skilled staff. Human resource manager of the
company helps in appointing the right employees for the right job. Right place and
right time increase the performance of employees and encourages the employee
towards the work (Brewster, 2017).
Performance management
This function of Human Resource manager in Tesco is to maintain the
employee’s performance. Human Resource manager uses the tools and techniques
to evaluate the performance of staff (Kearney, 2018). This function of human
resource manager of Tesco works as motivation because employees are
appreciated for their good performance by reward system and many others.
Appreciation to employees encourages the employees towards the work which
enhances the performance and skill of the employee (Jøranli, 2018).
Training and Development
It has been seen that the employees plays the role in developing the
personality of the employees. Human resource manager of Tesco provides training
to employees to explain or to train the employees as per the profile of the
employees. He also provides the training to the employees for the other profile for
which the employee is promoted. This function of human resource managers of the
company develops the talent and skill in the company.
Strength and Weakness of approaches of Recruitment and Selection
There are many approaches of recruitment and selection process such as
internal recruitment, online recruitment and others. These approaches have some
strength and weakness, those are explained below:

In this approach, the speed of the recruitment process is enhanced for both-
the candidates and the organisation. It has been evaluated that the online
recruitment is a cost saving process for the company (Brandão, Morais, Dias, Silva,
and Mário, 2017).
For example- Tesco posts the advertisement on the websites with the application
form which saves the time and cost of the company in publishing the news in the
newspaper and receiving the responses from the applicants.
Weakness
There are many people who do not believe on the website advertisement. People
consider the information as a fake advertisement. It is observed that this negatively
affects the brand image of the company (Ramkumar, 2018).
For example- Job postings for Tesco can be seen on different websites which is
considered as a fake advertisement. When real advertisement is considered as a
fake advertisement it affects the brand image of the company.
Recruitment Campus Placements
Strength
It has been seen that the campus placement helps the company in appointing
the high quality candidates. It has been seen that the placement at UK universities
helps the company in appointing the people of higher level of skills which is
beneficial for the company. The company take the advantage by appointing the fresh
talent for the company because the new generation gets the fresh and unique idea
for the profit of the company (Claus Wehner, Giardini, and Kabst, 2015).
For example- Tesco appoints the consultants to hire the fresh talent and skills for
some specific profiles such as Accountants, calling and others. It can appoint by
taking the intelligence test and personal interview.
Weakness
Campus placement is the cost and time consuming process for the company.
It has been seen that the company has to consume the high cost to hire the students

from the campus placement. The process is long because number of student applies
for the job; the manager has to take the personal interview of each student.
For example- Human resource manager of Tesco visits the university to appoint the
student for fresh talent and skill. To organise the campus placements, the company
uses the banners and posters to inform the student which consumes cost.
