INTRODUCTION
HSIE is the acronym of Human Society and Its Environment that focuses on interaction
of human with world. It is the study of environment that includes human interaction with world.
It is basically concerned with human interact with different types of societies that covered natural
and built (Plumridge, 2018). It includes some important subject such as geography, culture,
societies, histories and other human oriented sciences. It is very important for students that they
should understand this subject in order to interact with other societies. HSIE is the important part
of curriculum off school. This report covers the importance of HSIE ion teaching and learning
and also covers application of HSIE principles.
TASK
Part 1: Philosophy of HSIE Teaching and Learning
HSIE is one of the important subject that should be understand by students in order to get
knowledge about societies. It is majorly concerned with the technique that how students need to
interact with environment so that they can able to perform and interact with other people. It is
identifying that it is the course that need to discuss in a school in class of 7 - 10 years. This class
is undertaken because in this stage students are now more concerned with subject matter and
ready for learn something new. It is very necessary for students that they should know how to
deal with different societies so that they can able to accept change. It is identifying that it have
two courses that are current as well as new one. Current course is concerned with Aboriginal
Studies Years 7–10 (Halcrow, 2018). It is the course in which students need to develop
understanding and knowledge of aboriginal cultures, people and experiences. It gives many
benefits in teaching department that are mentioned below:
ď‚· It enables students in solving the problem in multi-disciplinary nature. It is very
important to teach.
ď‚· It also helps to students that they are able to see the interactions and connections in every
part of social and environmental factors.
ď‚· With the help of this course they are able to undertake social enquiry to find anything.
ď‚· It also assist to students that they can develop their civic responsibility, self-realisation,
fostering human relationships. It also provide opportunities for the purpose of creative
and critical thinking.

It is identified from the above discussion of importance of HSIE that students are now
understand their antecedent and future with the help of proper understanding of this subject it is
very necessary for students. HSIE aim is providing the way to deal with society with different
cultures and traditions. It is not easy for anyone because every person has different perspective
that how they can use this study in their career path. It is helpful in accepting and overcoming
with the challenge that they are facing in the process of communicate with other society.
This course is continue in Australia because in that country there are many aboriginal
people. It is very important for every person that they should understand them so that they can
find their problems and solutions (Hays and Hendry, 2018). It is very important for students that
they should understand the environment so that they can talk with aboriginal people. This course
focus on some theories that are mentioned below:
Academic rationalism
It is very important for students that they should use their rational mind in order to
understand human. Academic rationalism is concerned with explaining the curriculum of HSIE
course in which teacher gives huge knowledge to the students so that they can understand the
purpose of this course. It is very necessary for teachers that they should conduct an orientation
programme in order to explain the curriculum of HSIE course.
Social reconstruction
It is the theory in which teacher are trying to construct their ways so that they can easily
communicate the concept of this course. In this stage teacher are trying to involve all students in
order to become an adult so that they can easily reconstruct and improve their societies by
generating values. It focusses on shaping their educators' thinking for the purpose of
understanding their curriculum.
Critical/radical approaches
It is concerned with analysing, interpreting and evaluating curriculum for the purpose of
study of HSIE course.
It become more effective with the help of disciplinary/integrative approaches. It
concerned with four approaches that are disciplinary, multi-disciplinary, cross-disciplinary,
trans-disciplinary approaches. Disciplinary involve only one area whereas multidisciplinary
concerned with understand of many areas. Cross disciplinary is concerned with viewing on
discipline from the point of view of other people. Last but not least trans disciplinary is

concerned with creation of a single and united group which just not limit to disciplinary
perspectives.
Curriculum plays an important role. As the students are taught all the things that are part
of the syllabus. It is vital that all the points are covered in the curriculum that are useful for the
student. All the things that are covered help them in future. The studies help the student in
development. There knowledge is based on what is taught to them. In 2003 the students were
given knowledge related to culture and diversity. So that the students understand about the
diversity in Aboriginal Peoples (Bates, 2018). It is important that the students who understand
all the points in curricula, will be able to understand the diversity.
There is update in syllabus in 2020 and the focus is on Familiarization and planning. Now
the focus is on practical based learning rather then theory. It is important that the students
understand the concept and all the principles related to the study. Due to COVID 19 teachers and
principal are given authority to decide the outcome related to the syllabus. The teaching time is
100-hour course in Years 7 to 10 or 200-hour course in Year 7, 8 or 9. The curriculum has
changed and updated so that there is more impact of the studies on the student.
Part 2: Application of HSIE Principles
Teachers plays a significant role in every student's life as they enhances their skills,
education, behaviour. Being teacher is not a easy task as they have to maintain classroom
behaviour, environment, preparing lessons, continuous developing personal skills. Teaching
cannot make students learn but it can motivate, increase knowledge, skills, make them
experienced and push forward to their future goals and make them to face real life or real world
challenges (Disbray, 2019). A good teaching understands the student's background, culture and
abilities and accordingly make them challenging and experienced to face real life situations
smartly.
Teaching and learning strategies: There are different strategies or techniques used in a
teaching line, some of them are mentioned below:
1. Roundtable: The concept of roundtable is used to discuss over a specific or particular
topic in which students come together in a circle or roundtable. The main purpose of this
strategy is to make them openAlthough there are several ways of learning and teaching, a
good tutor are prepared their students with a clear and set goals, having a fair
expectations with a positive attitude and patient behaviour because learning takes times

on regular basis. Strategies and techniques are structured for both teacher and learner.
with their thoughts. In this the debate or arguments are occurred over a topic in which
students tell about their opinions and thoughts whether they are in favour or against with
a valid reason. This methods helps students to think over topic and gain knowledge and
then debate over things with team and classmates, this can build bonds between their
classmates. But sometimes, the heated arguments can lead to fights and violence.
2. Peer writing: This strategy helps very well in the learning process of students in which
students give an written assessments by an unknown person or authority or peer editor. It
is completely a brainstorming process in which their learning skills can be improved and
students get an appropriate feedback and discussion is held in the classroom in front of
everyone. This is a excellent technique which great advantage that students can write if
he hesitate to speak his thoughts in front of everyone, it can be helpful with guidance for
his improvement. But verbal skills is also important to speak out ideas , so student must
be capable with both qualities.
3. Reciprocal Peer Questioning: It is flexible in nature. A student is ask to generate two to
three questions over topics and he do not have to answer those questions but bring it
among rest of the students so that they can team up and find answers over it. Each leaner
can bring those questions and other discussing reading on generated questions. A highly
educated student team up with lower class students so they can review their concepts and
academic skills (Nally, 2019). This can build bonds between tutor and tutees and can be
served well to increase knowledge, also their will be hesitation between both because of
their academic concepts and standards.
4. Think pair square: This is based on communication of students which encourages
targeted languages, reflection, analysis, cross calculations (Buchanan, 2021). This
concept reflects on problem solving first in between pairs then in groups. In this students
are discussed over problems then come with reported feedback , different methodologies
and techniques. They compare it get a proper and effective solution. It can be
advantageous to students to involve in team work, shares and gains thoughts, learn new
skills to solve problems but in other way it can be confusing because every student think
in their own right way.

5. Think Pair-Share: In this students poses a question with a given time period of 30
seconds or one minute to discuss over topic with a paired member (Smyth, 2020). Every
learner pairs with another and they both discuss the facts and view and the responded
mutually. This can be helpful when student cannot find a appropriate solution but better
get results in pair.
6. Structured controversy: This learning strategy divides the whole class with four pairs
or groups (Nguyen and Loughland, 2018). The tutor gives a controversial topic and
tasked them to save positions. The students have to argue whether he is in support or in
against , he plays as a role of advocate to argue over things and defend his thought or
position which he wants to win. It is a very complicated but effective and at last students
give their presentations in the whole class. This enhance their speedy learning, logical
thinking to present himself and protects the position in further and future life.
7. Thinking aloud paired problem solving: This concept says that a student who is not
problem solver can take a notes and two learners can switch their roles, one can be a
solver and other one can be note taker and report back about the solutions and methods. It
enhances thinking capabilities and learns things in a different perceptions.
Although there are several ways of learning and teaching, a good tutor are prepared their
students with a clear and set goals, having a fair expectations with a positive attitude and patient
behaviour because learning takes times on regular basis. Strategies and techniques are structured
for both teacher and learner.
CONCLUSION
It is concluded that HSIE is very important for students that they become able to
understand the other societies. It is very important for every person as it assist in understanding
of new societies. The students are important and future of the nation so it is important that they
are taught according to all the updates and practical learning. The curriculum is also part of this
report. The principles and its applications are also mentioned in this report.
