The reading in chapter 1 and 2 have informed my initial thoughts about human
development and the field of development psychology. In regards to human development, the
two chapters have made me acknowledge and verify that culture significantly impacts the human
development (Arnett, Chapin & Brownlow, 2018). These chapters have been significant in
helping me think about all the stages of human development via the engaging lens of culture. It
has helped me think of human development through a wholly cultural approach to human
development by integrating cross-cultural examples in the entire narrative to unearth the
influence of cultural factors, both in New Zealand and Australia and around the globe.
In regards to my initial thoughts about the field of developmental psychology, the two
chapters have made me appreciate that developmental psychology remains imperative to
comprehend how humans learn, mature as well as adapt throughout the developmental stages.
These chapters have helped me acknowledge that throughout the humans’ lives, they go through
a range of developmental stages and that developmental psychologist study how human grow,
develop as well as adapt at each life stage. Thus, these chapters have helped me learn that
developmental psychologist undertake research designed to assist people reach their full
potential.
However, my thoughts about human development have not changed after reading the two
chapters. On the contrary, these chapters have indeed reaffirmed my views and thoughts about
the human development by indicating that people develop through various stages. I have further
not been surprised by anything learned so far since I have been reading about human
development and chapters 1 and 2 have only reinforced my initial knowledge. I am only still

wondering how developmental psychologists effectively managed to link cultural factors and
human development.
