ADVANCED NETWORK DESIGN
Introduction
There is a requirement in Excelfior Ltd. To rebuild their current network framework as there
are different security issues and outdated hardware devices used. The company is a digital
communication company and works in Melbourne for designing managing and hosting the website
of the company. The number of departments in the organization should be identified and the
developed working in the organization are identified for the management of the different operation.
The security issues in the current network solution should be identified for the development of the
network framework eliminating the current vulnerability of the network. The current network
technologies that are needed for the development of the network solution should be identified for
the analysis of the networking protocols that are needed for the configuration of the hardware
devices. The report describes the methodology used for gathering the requirement and from the
different level of user and the management staffs for improvement of their work efficiency. The
accuracy of the analysis of the requirement helps in aligning the network according to the
organization and reduce the error in the final solution developed.
Task 1:
Requirement gathering
For gathering the requirement the different methodology are used and an analysis is made
on the current faults of the network and revise the current network solution to meet the aims and
objectives of the organization. A set of questionnaires is distributed with the user and the
management staffs quickly gather requirement. An interview is arranged with the stakeholders and
brainstorming session is arranged for understanding the current problems faced by the user and
prepare the network solution. The questions that can be shared with the users are created and listed
below for the different users to identify the requirement quickly.
Users
What are the benefits that the user needs to get with the re configuration of the network?
What types of services are necessary for the management of the daily operations and
improve the efficiency of the current workplace?
Is there any requirement for wireless network for connecting the wireless devices?
Staffs
How many number of users are there in each of the departments?

ADVANCED NETWORK DESIGN
What type of network devices are used for the management of the network
communication?
What is the budget allocated for the project and the expected growthy in the number of
users in the coming years?
The arrangement of interviews with the stakeholders associated with the development of the
project helps in clarifying the requirement and reduce the risk of change in the requirement during
the progress of the project. The following flow chart is created for categorizing the requirement and
development of the network assessment plan for the company.
The categories and requirements of the device needed for the preparation of the network solution
are given below:
Device Name Device Type Requirement
Router Cisco 2811 series router It is used for ensuring
successful delivery of the data
packets to the destination
address of the network.
Switch Cisco 2960 series switch It is used connecting the
network with redundant links

Task 2:
Network Design
Justification of the design
The network is designed after analysing the requirement from the different group of user
and identification of the structure of the organization. The network is designed by dividing the
network into smaller subnet according to the departments and each of the departments are
connected using separate vlan. The switches that are user for the distribution of the network is
connected with redundant link such that the uptime of the network is increased and there is no
packet loss, jitter and delay in the network. Four server is used for the management of the front end
and the back end operation of the company and a subnet plan is created for the configuration of the
hardware interface and the vlans. The core multilayer switch is configured as a server for the
management of the other switch connected in the network and sharing of the vlan information with
the other switch. A switch isn also configured with DHCP for automatically assigning IP address to
each of the device for the different vlans and reduce the effort of the network administrator for the
management of the static IP address for the PCs. The network design is kept simple for easily
troubleshooting the errors and increase the efficiency and performance of the network.
Performance Metrics
The performance of the network is the main criteria for the success of the network and it is
measured using different network management and monitoring tools. A minimum bandwidth of 100
mbps is maintained for all the links such that there is no congestion in the network. Separate
communication channels are used for each of the department such that the response time is

minimum and there is no packet loss. The use of the network monitoring tool can help in
identification of the error and consumption of the bandwidth for the management of the flow of
data in the network. The delay in the network can be analysed using the ping test and management
of the configuration for reducing the delay. The following table is created for the demonstration of
requirement for accessing each of the service essential for the daily operation. The following table is
created for the requirement of each of the service needed to be successfully delivered to the users
connected in the network.
Application Required Bandwidth
Email 10 – 100 Kbps
Messaging < 10 Kbps
Web Browsing 64 – 100+ Kbps
Audio Streaming 96 -160 Kbps
VOIP 24 – 100+ Kbps
Video Streaming 96 – 200+ Kbps

Conclusion
It can be concluded from the report that for the development of a scalable network design a
detailed analysis should be made on the current and the future needs of the organisation. An
analysis is made on the different requirement gathering techniques and the best methodology is
selected for gathering requirement from different users and stakeholders connected in the network.
Interviews are arranged with the stakeholders of the organization and users for meeting their
expectation and develop the solution according to their requirement. An assessment plan is created
for the identification of the requirement and the solution is created in simulation software for the
identification of the performance metrics. The packet loss of the requirement, utilization, uptime,
delay and packet loss are identified such that the network solution is developed and the network
infrastructure is developed aligning the requirement of the organization. It is necessary to create a
project budget by analysing the cost of the hardware that are necessary to be implemented for the
development of the network.
