Reflection about this experience
Usefulness of Johari window and challenges in self-disclosure
The Johari window has been very helpful as it helped me to understand all the different
aspects of my persona. I have been able to come across the four different areas of this model
which shows some of rye dominant traits that are present within my personality. I have learned
about all the different traits that fall in the four different areas

The open area
This is how the information that a person already knows about himself or herself. This set
of information is also known by others. This basically includes the skills, attitude, behavior and
the knowledge of the individual. I have been able to learn that I am of a calm and dependable
nature. This is also what my close friend s and colleagues feel about me. They always share
secrets and problems with me as they know that I would calmly listen to them. I am also of a
dependable nature and friends depend on me for help.
The blind spot
This area talks about information unknown to self but known to others. I have learned
that others think me to be cheerful. However, I have always identified myself as a very reserved
person who is of an introverted nature. However, as per my close friends, I can mingle with
people once I form a close bond with them.
Hidden Area
This part talks about the traits that are known to the individual but unknown to others do
not know. I have seen that others do not know about my caring and clever nature. As I usually
stay self-occupied and reserved others feel that I am selfish and proud. I do not talk to others and
I do not caré about other feelings. However, I know that I am quite soft-hearted. I do not exhibit
my feelings but deep down I cleverly take initiates to help others.

Unknown area
This includes certain information that is neither known to the individuals nor by others.
This includes traits that might not be in scope currently but can be gradually developed in the
near future. I have learned that I can be bold and adaptable if the situation ever demands it.
I feel that self-disclosure is so challenging because it brings to light all the good and bad
traits in front of one's' close friends, colleagues, and relatives. As per my perception, the mental
state of different individuals is different. Many of them might like to maintain a very private
nature. As in my case, initially, I felt that self-disclosure will bring my weaknesses in front of my
close friends and colleagues. This is not right as I might become vulnerable to others. However, I
later realized that self-disclosure is helpful as it helps in taking future strategies for dealing with
weaknesses and nurturing the strengths. I will also be able to use my qualities for improving my
personal and my professional lives as well.
Usefulness of overcoming conflict
Feedback to lessen the Blind area
Teammates often give their feedbacks during any ongoing projects. During the last few
weeks, some they gave me bad feedback. There were conflicts between me and my team. I could
not make out why they gave me negative feedback. I was unhappy. They talk about any
particular behavior or attitude that might have dissatisfied them. I was unaware that I can be of a
cheerful nature. I thought that staying composed and of a serious nature is useful for the
business. However, after the team feedback, I came to know that they did not like the serious
nature of their team leader as it often worries them. They suffer from this feeling that the team
leader is not friendly and will not listen to their doubts. They are happy in interacting with

happy, friendly and cheerful ones. Thus, I realized keeping a happy, cheerful and welcoming
nature will make the teammates work properly.
Using the unknown area
The unknown area of the Johari window is very useful in overcoming conflicts as it
helps the individual to understand the potentials that he might adopt in the future. There can be
several workplace issues or conflicts arising in the future that need different handling. For
instance one of my unknown areas traits is bold. I have realized that as I am acting as the team
leader, there might be a situation in the future where I will have to take an immediate decision in
the absence of the manager. Apparently, I am of a timid nature, but I have come to know that if
the situation demands, I can gather courage and be bold to handle any unforeseen emergency.
