Introduction
Hospitality sector has comprised a vast part in service industry. This sector includes
different categories of firms like hotel and accommodation industry, travel and tourist industry,
food and service industry and other similar customer service industries. The main aim of this
sector is to provide quality services to their different clients present across the globe. In order to
make their client happy with their services employees of this sector has to run through different
barriers. Beside generating client or customer management, the human resource managers to this
sector needs to developed different strategies to make their employees happy and provide job
satisfaction that will helps the organization to attract employees. This essay aims to generate a
brief concept of different challenges or issues faced by any human resources managers of this
industry to make their employee attract to their job and helps the sector to gain more profit. This
paper also discusses various preventive measures that may help the firm to reduce adverse effect
raised due to the problem of employee retain in the organization and helps the firm to generate
employee engagement and enhance the organizational profit.
Discussion
During the last few years, hospitality industry is growing rapidly and helps in
contributing for the developing the country’s economy. Hospitality industry comprises three
main sectors lodgings or accommodation, food and service providing industry and travel and
tourism industry. The main aim of this sector is to maintain a good relation with their clients
present across the world (Mahoney & Deckop, 1986). The managers and employees of this
sector has developed effective measures to improve their service quality that would help them to
satisfy their client’s new demands and requirements. Employees of this industry needs to develop

different qualities like soft -spoken attitude, empathy and proactive nature for making their
customers happy with their services. They have to face different client and based on this they
need to meet their requirements according to their choices and preferences. This sector has to
retain their skilled employees because they have immense experience in maintaining good and
long- term relationship with existing clients and have the capacity to establish effective
relationship with new clients (Baily & Peetz, 2014). Any skilled staffs have proactive nature that
would helped them to solve conflicts during any difficult situation (Saad, 2013). This industry
needs to assign or recruit employees because the more experience the staff have the more quality
service they deliver (Cooper & Baird, 2015 . Human resources managers of this sector has
established different strategies to make their employees happy with their job and generate staffs
interest to deliver best effort for developing the organization (Dockery & Bawa, 2014). As per
the Personnel Administration/ Human Resources Management, managers needs to develop
orientation program for making their staff introduced to the firm (Murray et al., 2017). This may
help employees understand about their job that company expects from them. There are different
challenges and barriers that managers of the mentioned sector has faced to make their employees
attracted towards the firm for attaining the organizational growth and development. These
challenges are discussed below:
With the continuous changes in the technologies and development sectors, hospitality
industry has also gone through numerous changes and developments. This has raised the
demands of employees and to meet various demands of different staffs, managers need to recruit
skilled employees to provide support to their existing employees. In this case, managers need to
offer huge salary package to their new staffs and this may affect the firm’s profit badly ( D

On behalf of the entire organization managers needs to develop training and orientation
program for the new employees to provide them a detailed knowledge about the job role and the
organization (Chung & Dnnunzio- Green, 2018). This would help the new employees to work
according to the needs and requirements of the organization. The time that required for
organizing this training and orientation program may affect the firm’s production badly.
Employees often seemed to attract to their job and their firm when they get the chance of
developing their skills talents. In other words, employees often get involved in such industries
where they get the scope of reaching their desired position in a steady manner (Ferreira, Mueller
& Papa, 2018). However, industries that have less opportunity for their employees, may suffer
from employee retention problem and that restricts the firm in achieving success in higher rate.
Team management plays a vital role in generating healthy work environment. Conflicts
and misunderstanding among different members of a particular team may affect the employee
satisfaction adversely and may incur the employee retention problems (Davis & Frolova, 2016).
To avoid this issue, managers needs to develop effective strategies that would help them to
identify the actual reason that raised the conflict and misunderstanding among the team and
develop measures to solve the same.
In appropriate leadership acts as the major reason for employee retention problems. As
per the statistics employee often quit their job because of the bad behavior of their leader.
Employee recognition plays a vital role in developing or attracting different employees to
develop their talents and urge to serve their organization (Brien, Thomas& Brown , 2017).
Without this recognition, employees may get demotivated and has seemed to quit their job. To
attract employees, leaders should develop strategies to recognize their best performers and
provide rewards facilities to make them feel attracted toward the firm (Partongton, 2016).

In order to attract employees, company needs to provide different facilities like medical
facilities, insurance facilities and other similar ones to retain their employees (Sissons &
Green ,2017). This facilities helps the company to attract new employees as well as helps the
existing employees to generate trust over their company (Dioko, Fok & Yeung, 2016). It will
also help the company to ensure employees about their job security. On the contrary, this has
become a major challenge for the organization to generate maximum profit from the market
because in order to maintain the mentioned facilities company needs to spend huge amount
without attaining any monetary profit.
Managers of any hospitality management industry should provide their employees work
from home facility, because it will help the employees to manage both their professional and
personal life properly. As per the statistics, 17 percent of the Australian preferred to perform
their office work from home (Ladkin & kichuk, 2017). The major benefit of this opportunity is
that employees often get enough time to complete their task and they can perform their duties in
their own comfort zone. This may help the firm to generate more employees as well as helps to
gain organizational profit (D Annunzio – Green & Teare, 2018). Thus after discussing the
above- mentioned facts it can conclude that managers on behalf of the entire organization need
to develop strategies that promote the facility of work from home facility for some percentage of
individuals associated with their organization.
There are different challenges in retaining a workforce in hospitality sector are discussed
below:
In order to retain the large number of employees, human resource manager of the
hospitality industry faced difficult situations while fulfilling their demands and rights. In case of
women, managers needs to provide their maternity leave for a long period of time that may affect

the organizational performance badly. As per the policy and retain their quality employee
managers needs to accept their demand. In some cases, it has seemed that employees may raise
the demand for revising their shift time. Sometime it has noticed that employees raised strikes
and create a joint movement against the company to make their demand fulfilled by the firm.
This has raised a serious challenging issue for the company for retaining their employees.
Company often seemed to revise their entire policies and company rules to meet their
employees demand. The time and effort that any hospitality industry needs to put for revising
their entire policy may waste vital time and affect the company’s production badly. Beside
generating facilities and benefits for employees firms has observed to give extra facilities for
retaining their female employees like company needs to provide pick up/drop facilities for their
female employees and the amount spend for maintaining the mentioned facilities may affect the
company’s net profit negatively.
Human resource managers of any hospitality company has seemed to suffer from
different barriers and challenges in developing different plans for attaining the organizational
success. Managers needs to develop plans to fulfil demands raised by their staff at the very
beginning to make their employees retain in the firm. Managers needs to recognize different
problems and requirements of their employees that because this may help them to hold their
labor force. The time, effort and money that requires for processing the entire system of
recognition of different problems may affect the organization’s profit badly.
Talent management has become the one of the important challenge for any managers to
achieve success in both retaining the existing employees and achieving organizational profit.
manager needs to recognize different skills and talents of every individual associated with the
firm. Based on this recognition, managers needs to allocate task and responsibilities for their

In some cases, it has observed that hospitality firm suffered from raising demands of their
employees for promoting the work from home facility. This may act as one of the main barrier
for the organization because this restrict the supervisors to keep eye on the performance of
employees who avail the said opportunity. Even it has hampered the organizational control over
their employees and may raise problems related to organizational discipline and culture.
Employee may have the chance to violet organizational policies and norms. Staffs may disobey
their supervisors and put negative impact of the reputation of the firm. Thus, it can state that
human resources managers may suffer from the mentioned difficulties for retaining their
workforce for attaining organizational growth and enhance their profit margin.
There are different measures that may help the firm to reduce the challenges or issues in
attracting and retaining workforce in any hospitality sector are given below:
Firstly, managers of any hospitality sector or firm needs to develop different effective
strategies to fulfil different requirements of their staffs in a systematic way that help both
organization and employees to meet their own interest. Like company need to deduct a specific
amount every month from the salary package of every employees to give them medical facilities,
insurance facilities and other similar ones. This may help the firm to provide all the necessary
facilities to all employees without affecting the organizational net profit. Secondly, complaining
should maintain a contract with their staffs for a certain period of time so that company can
recruit new employees for the same post and help the firm to reduce the pressure of different
emerging demands of huge employees associated with the organization. Company, needs to
equally distribute responsibilities among all staffs present in the organization because it will help

in the organization. Firms has to spend huge amount of money for providing extra facilities for
retaining their female employees and this may affect the company’s net profit adversely.
Company needs to develop effective strategies this would help the firm to maintain both
employees requirements and organizational profit. Thus, it can state that hospitality sector has
faced major challenges in retaining their organizational staffs.
