Case Study – Maple Leaf Shoes Ltds.
Answer to Question 1
Evaluation of Recruitment Strategy of Maple Leaf Shoes
From the overall analysis of the case study of Maple Leaf Shoes, it can be evaluated that
the recruitment strategy of the company was poor due to the following four aspects:
Firstly, the current practices of the company shows that activities related to HR are not
dealt with experienced or skilled people. In such scenario, the HR manager needs to plan various
strategies for dealing with short and long term challenges such as competition, managerial
training and development of employees as well as increase in cost (HarvardBusinessReview,
2020). For instance- It has been seen that the company and HR department followed the “work
slow” approach which was impacting the performance of the company. Moreover, there were
different union members who were taking care of the different recruitment activities which
impacted the performance.
Additionally, it has been noticed that the managers of Maple Leaf Shoes did not consider
HR as the important aspect and the HR has no significant impact on the company. They analyzed
that HR has been kept for record-keeping and payroll purposes. In the company, Maple Leaf
Shoes have gone through different HR managers who have provided different ideas, however,
everyone came and gone. The ideas were not consistent which impacted the entire performance
of the company negatively. For instance- Pat Lim, General Manager was being given with the
overall in charge of the HR department which was not correct as he was the marketing in-charge.
From such scenario, it can be seen that the HR functions were not considered effectively at
maple Leaf Shoes Ltd.

Furthermore, there was lack of consistency in the ideas along with lack of standardization
in the job description and process of recruitment which can be impacting performance of the
company negatively. There is no such formal structure present in the company which impacted
the growth of the company (HarvardBusinessReview, 2020). For instance- It was being seen
that while posting the job requirement for HR position, Clark did not mention the educational
qualifications and the company felt HR is normal reception related job and it did not carry much
value for the company.
Lastly, the main drawback is that the leaders of the company are not putting high
emphasis on the functions of the HR in the company which created low employee morale and
high level of turnover. For instance- At Maple leaves Shoes Ltd, there were no such appraisals
or incentives provided to the different employees and due to the same, the turnover was high and
it impacted their performance.
