INTRODUCTION
Human resource management plays an important role in the field of any business. The
report mainly focus on the roles and responsibility of Human resource in Sainsbury's. It is one of
most leading retailer company in UK who offer variety of groceries. There are almost 1415
supermarket available in all over the world and this report is designed to assess knowledge of
human resource management and its functions to the workforce planning. The report also
explains the strength and weaknesses of different approaches that are used in recruitment and
selection process. It also explains benefits of human resource management for employee as well
as employer in Sainsbury's. The report also help to present the effectiveness of different HRM
practices for company's profit and its productivity. It also analyze the importance of employee
relations with respect to HRM decision making. The report also identify the key elements of
employment legislation and the impact upon its decision making.

1. Overview of the organization and functions of Human Resource Management
Human resource management is the biggest approach in every industry. Even Sainsbury's
is also have its own management system. Sainsbury's is count as second largest supermarket in
United Kingdom. The company provide different variety of groceries and there were about 1400
shops available in all over the world. The company has human resource management system
which help to run a business in an effective way and they play an important role in a company.
HR have different functions and some of them are mention below:

Recruitment and Selection: it is count one of the most important function of Human
resource. Recruitment is the process of selecting a right candidate for the job based on
objective criteria (Function of HR, 2018). In the context of Sainsbury's, HR also hire
some of the qualified employees for the job and take interviews then select the best
option out of many.
Employee relations: Another major function of HR is to maintain or manage employee
relations because employee are the pillars of an organization. HR of Sainsbury's also
organized many activity in order to know them personally as well as professionally.
There is a need to manage relationship and motivate them because they are the key
person of an organization.
Training and development: employers must provide all the necessary tools such as HR
provide training and development session for their new employees in order to know their

familiar with the candidate while in the case of external method, HR search the candidate outside
of the current area in order to fill the option in an organization. Both methods have their own

have less paper work and this help to consume their time as well as money.

skilled employee in order to enhance the level of company. By using correct workforce planning
HR of a company can easily find new ways for better structuring of a company. Another HRM
practices such as development and training method, where HR provide complete training session
to their new staff so that they can easily accept the new culture and help to achieve the defined
goals.
HRM practice such as performance management also help to achieve better opportunities
for a company (Lopez-Cotarelo and Nicolini, 2015). Reviewing the employees performance also
help to check whether they are doing for the betterment of a company or not. Using reward
system in a workforce planning can also help to promote employees for doing their best in a
workplace. This system help to achieve all the targets and objectives of a company and these
HRM practices help for the proper workforce planning as well as welfare of a company.
B. Evaluating the organizations approaches for the effectiveness of employee relations
There are different HRM practices which help Sainsbury's in the term of raising profit as
well as productivity. The company also achieve all its desired objectives as well as profit with
the below mention perspective:
Effective Reward system: when the company offer reward system in the term of money
it directly affect the performance of employee as well as employer as they take their task
more seriously as compared to past. After implementing this HRM practice into the
workplace of Sainsbury's, it is observed that performance of all the employees improved

ensure equality in all view point. The company did not discriminate on the basis of age, gender,
caste and religion (Azarniya and et.al., 2015). As per the civil act prohibits the discrimination
against employees on the basis of above mention areas and any employee found any type of
discrimination done in the premises then employee can ask for legislative help in order to fulfill
their demands. That is why HRM always try to feel comfortable and motivate them in all
perspective.
Wages and Hours: Employees of a company should be aware related to their working hours and
daily basis work done (Reguieg and et.al., 2015). If they work for extra time then HR should pay
extra wages for their overtime. Even the company should allow their leaves as per their need or
requirement. This time distribution management system help HRM to take better decision for the

Medical and Disability: HR of a company should make sure that there should not be any
discrimination on the basis of genetic information such as disorder in the family member. The
company should also make sure that discrimination on the basis of their disability is illegal in the
