INTRODUCTION
Human Resource Management is a crucial part of business management in which
managers do manage the people who works for organization. Without HRM, no company can
become successful. Effective HR practices lead company to earn profits and sustain its business
for long time (Noe and et.al., 2017). Tesco Company is a multinational company which was
founded in year 1919 by Jack Cohen and deals in retail sector. Report will highlight the purpose
and scope of HRM, evaluation of elements of HRM and analysis of factors that affect the HRM.
Report will describe the recruitment process and it's evaluation.
TASK 1
1. An Overview Of Tesco
TESCO PLC is a multinational company leading in retailing industry, founded in 1919.
It's headquarter is in Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom (UK). It was founded by Jack
Cohen. It has 6800+ shops. It has 4,40,000+ employees. Its current market are within 7 countries
across Asia, Europe and UK. It is leading company in UK retailing industry. Tesco has
diversified in so many business areas like Books, Clothing, Electronic, Furniture, Software,
Toys, Financial Services, Telecoms, Petrol and Internet Services. Tesco has so many subsidiaries
companies like – Tesco Stores Ltd., Tesco Bank, Tesco Mobile, Tesco Family Dining Ltd.,
Booker Group, Tesco Ireland, Dunnhumby and Jack's. Tesco is listed on the London Stock
Exchange. Tesco's revenue of year 2018 was £57,491 million. Tesco's operating and net income
was £1,644 million and £1,208 million respectively.
Currently, Chairman of Tesco is John Allan and Dave Lewis is CEO of the company.
Tesco's Board consists of 14 members, in which 4 members are executive and 10 members are
non-executives. Tesco's market share is approx 27.4%. Tesco continues to bring diversified
products in its list of products, which include the sale of bio-products and the advocacy of
healthy lifestyle. In year 2000, Tesco launched its electronic commercial website to provide
online services to its customers (Tesco PLC Success Story, 2017).
2. Purpose, Roles and Responsibilities of HR Functions
HR Functions are as follows -
11 Recruitment And Selection – Recruitment is the process of finding and attracting pool
of candidates. Selection is the process of choosing suitable candidates out of pool of
candidates.

Purpose of Recruitment and Selection is to identifying and motivating potential
employees for the job. Role and responsibility of Recruitment and Selection is to increase the
efficiency of organization.

1 Training And Development – Training refers to the process of improving the skills and
giving the knowledge regarding jobs. Development refers to the opportunities given to
employees for the growth.
Purpose of Training and Development is to provide growth opportunities to the
employees in the organization at the right time. Role and Responsibility of Training and
Development is to shaping the right and positive attitudes and values of employees towards his
job, organization and life (Wright, 2018).

1 Performance Appraisal – Performance Appraisal is the process of evaluating and
measuring the performance of employees.
Purpose of Performance Appraisal is to give a chance to the employees for the
improvement. Role and Responsibility of Performance Appraisal is to correct evaluate the
performance and give rating them on the basis of their performance, not on the basis of another
characters.

1 Compensation Management – Compensation Management refers to the process of
providing compensation like bonus, commission, recognition, rewards, profits-sharing,
stock benefits etc. to the employees to do better work.
Purpose behind Compensation Management is to motivate the employees to do better
performance. Role and Responsibility of Compensation Management is to provide accurate
compensation to right employee according to his performance.

employer within an organization. Purpose behind Industrial Relation is to maintain a
good working environment of organization. Role and Responsibility of Industrial
Relations is to bring transparent in the relationship of employer and employees (Cascio,

3. Evaluation of HRM Approaches of Tesco
11 Workforce Planning Approach – Tesco uses Competency-based Approach, in which
company list down the required competencies which is needed in jobs. On the basis of
that competencies, they plan throughout the whole HR process.

Strength of this approach is that it improves the quality of HR activities which lead to

1 Performance Management Approach – Tesco uses Balanced Scorecard Approach
for performance management. In this approach, company uses matrix to measure and
provide feedback to the employee and organization.
Strength of this approach is that it encourages communication within the organization.
Weakness of this approach is that it measures the performance on the basis of 4
perspectives (financial perspective, customer perspective, business and production
processes perspective and learning and growth perspective), which is wrong because
there are so many factors which influence the performance of employees (Balanced Score
Card, 2018).

1 Rewards System Approach Tesco uses both Monetary And Non-Monetary
Approaches to reward system. It gives annual bonus, share incentives and colleagues as
shareholders to employees for the betterment of performance.
Strength of this approach is that it motivate the staffs to work better.

4. Approach to Employee Engagement, Flexible Organization, Flexible Working Practice,
Employer of Choice, And The importance of employees' relations
Aon Hewitt’s Employee Engagement Model – Aon Hewitt defines 3 attributes through
which Tesco can engage its employees for the longer periods and maintain its relationships with
employees. These 3 attributes (which is known as 3S) are as follows -
SAY – Tesco must say positive and true about the employees, performance and
organization. Positive and true words help Tesco to win its employees trust which helps
in building relationships.
STAY – Tesco must feel employee that they are important asset of organization. Without
them, organization is nothing. This feeling make employees loyal towards Tesco which
reduces the turnover of the company.
STRIVE – Tesco should motivate the employees for the achievement of personal and
professional objectives. This help employees to work hard and able to achieve the
organization goals. (Bailey and et.al., 2018).
Flexible Organization – A flexible organization refers to the organisation that easily
adapt the changes according to its external environment in order to earn profits and sustain the
business for long term period. When, Tesco will adopt flexible organization structure, it
improves the efficiency of employees which lead to improvement in their performance. This
helps organization to earn profits and employees to become satisfied.
Flexible Working Practice – It is a practice which is given to the employees choose to
according to their choices on when to work, where to work and how long they want to work.
Adoption of this practice lead to Tesco's employees to do maintain a balance between work and
life which help employee relax and happy. This lead them to work with concentration. Because
of this concentration, they will able to achieve his/her task which is beneficial for the company
itself. (Brewster, Chung and Sparrow, 2016).
Employer of Choice – It refers that Tesco has good work environment and many
employees are willing to work in the organisation. It leads to low attrition rate and many talented

5. Key Areas Of Employment Legislation
Tesco must have to strictly follow the employment legislation. If company doesn't follow
the employment legislation, they might face government and legal actions. Also, Tesco can
disclose forever. Following Employment Legislation must be follow by they company are -
1. Equality Act 2010 – According to this act, Tesco can't discriminate with any employees
on the basis of following characteristics like age, disability, marriage, sex, race, religion
and beliefs etc. during recruitment, selection, promotion and reward management.
2. Health and Safety Act 1974 – According to this act, Tesco must provide proper training
regarding safety tools and techniques. Also, before selecting any person, company must
check his and his family health history.
3. Working Time Regulation Act 1998 - Tesco must follow the rules given in this act in
respect of holidays, daily breaks, night work and the maximum working day (Banfield,
Kay and Royles, 2018).
4. National Minimum Wage Act 1998 – This act states that Tesco have to pay minimum
wages to the workers. The minimum wage rates are as follows -
