Forced evictions
3

Since 2000, more than two million individuals have been compulsorily evicted from their
houses, as well as hundreds of thousands more people are at risk of removal all over the nation.
Most of the people are already disregarded, and many individuals live without having any access
to adequate health care, education, clean water or sanitation. Removals are performed without
adequate notice, genuine consultation, alternative accommodation or compensation. Law
enforcement officials at times utilize force when performing evictions. They beating and injuring
the residents, involving children (Freeman, 2017).
Policing and Justice
Despite of continuous government pledges to address the issue in criminal justice system
in Nigeria, less progress has been made. There is widespread and fragrant disregard among the
Nigeria police Force for human rights as well as the due process. Individuals are subjected to
enforced withdrawals and killed by the police unlawfully before or during arrest at road blocks
or street. Various unlawful killings seen to be extra-judicial executions as well as perpetrators
usually go unpunished. In Nigeria, the crimes which are committed by police force are not
random. In nation where bribes guarantee safety of people, those individuals who cannot afford
to pay them are at high risk of tortured to death or being shot by the police. The victim's family
often cannot afford to strive for justice as they are not able to pay the fees of court or the lawyer
(Ghys, 2019).
Prisoners are continuously held through the police for lengthier in comparison to the
constitutionally guaranteed 48 hours previously being taken before a judge, frequently waiting
weeks or even months. Around 70 per cent of Nigeria's approx. 48,000 prison inmates are pre-
trial captives (NIGERIA HUMAN RIGHTS, 2021). They are frequently detained in awful
conditions, waiting longer times for trial as the system of justice in Nigeria is riddled with
delays. Captives are often deprived of their lawful right in order to see a lawyer. There are many
people who have to pay for getting medical care or food, or to avoid being tortured or abused or
otherwise ill-treated. The Nigerian Police regularly torture the suspects, involving children
(Salawu, 2016).
Conflict in the Niger Delta
Corruption, poverty as well as the presence of arms, oil and gangs make Niger delta a
volatile region. The criminal gangs and armed groups have explicitly want to control resources
as well as engage in violence acts. It leads to violent confrontations among Joint Task Force and

armed groups. The security forces, involving military, constantly commit violations of Human
rights in Niger delta, involving torture, extra judicial execution, destruction of homes and other
ill treatment (Caswell, and Cifor, 2016).
Other concerns
The defenders and journalist of human rights face harassment and intimidation on regular
basis. They are beaten and threatened by police as well as security forces and many among them
have been killed in suspicious situations. The laws of Nigeria still administer improper protection
for right to freedom of expression. It is pervasive to violence against women involving rape,
domestic violence and other forms of violence through private individuals and state officials. The
responsible authorities constantly failed to exercise control and due diligence in addressing and
preventing sexual violence through non state and state actors, which leads to an entrenched
impurity culture. Children are regularly imprisoned with adults in prison cells. The one
functioning remand home of Nigeria was overcrowded, with around 600 children held in services
designed for 200 people. The provision of government of Nigeria for vulnerable and homeless
children is insufficient with more than one million street children all across the nation
(Bonnitcha, and McCorquodale, 2017).
The government of Nigeria took some steps in order to investigate suspected abuses,
however fewer ladders to impeach officers who committed desecrations, whether in security
forces or somewhere else in government. Exemption remained prevalent at all the levels of
administration. The Nigerian government didn’t sufficiently examine or impeach most of the key
outstanding claims of human rights defilements through the security forces or many of the police
cases or other abuse of power (NIGERIA 2018 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT, 2018). Financial as
well as in-kind resources are provided by the Borno State government to the CJTF, which is a
nongovernmental self-defense paramilitaries who coordinated and sometimes aligned with
military in order to stop attacks contrary to civilian populations through Boko Haram as well as
ISIS-WA. The Human rights organizations as well as press reporting charged CJTF with
obligating human rights abuses. A few steps are also taking by the government in order to
investigate or punish the members of CJTF who committed abuses of human rights (Taylor,
Bradbury‐Jones, and Lund, 2019).
