Human service work can provide an opportunity for social change as well as a means of
maintaining social order
Human services allows for social change to occur and change the social constructs for
individuals and groups in needs. This essay will outline how my values have impacted the way I
view the world. Additionally, it will focus on how dominant ideologies through the media and
politics have shaped my values.
The changes in the human relationships and interactions play a major role in transforming
social and cultural institutions. These changes are not steady and take time to create long term
consequences on the society as a whole. A person can change the overview of their perception of
the world by merely changing their own ideology as in the case of my own personal experience. As
per my experience, I have found that as my regime of maintaining discipline in my life started, the
life around me got better. My punctual and disciplined attitude, not just made me excel in my work
but I could also experience an ease in handling people around me to provide them social order. A
man who provides services with their own personal examples tends to create more opportunity for
social change and order (Schwartz, 2013).
Values and ideologies can be individualistic and collective, its refer to what is desirable or
ought to be disable, it determines how individuals ought to behave and what the appropriate
behavior is (Chenoweth& McAuliffe 2017). My values have influenced the way I view human
services and social constructs. Social values tend to make us understand the structure of society and
monitor the change needed in the social order. Academic social scientists like, Maslow or Rokeach
have described the social values and have worked to explore their manifestations and dynamics.
My personal values are based on, fairness, equality of opportunity, and social justice. These values
have been expanded through an experience that I have encountered through a friend. They helped
me in being humble around the group of people I meet and interact with. The interaction not only
transfers the values from one person to another but also create harmony amongst the people in the
society. Values are often connected with the physical survival of mankind on the earth. The ones
which are connected to self actualization provide highest intellect and motivation to the society
(Doe, 2004).
The ideologies of human services consist of some basic characteristics like, cognition
power, guidance to provide one’s evolution and capacity to inspire people and motivate them.
Dominant ideologies in social or political service tend to create a justification for their ideology and
the power of being reasonable in the same creates a powerful impact on the society. This is how a
value and ideology impacts the social change and order of the society (Watson and Hoefer,

2014). Humans are connected to each other through complicated and simplified categories of
ideologies, making divisions powerful. Example- fascism, liberalism, nationalism etc.
