CE 1.2 Project Background
CE 1.2.1 Characteristics of the project
The project of Designing, Analysis and Development of Heating, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning System (HVAC) was my first major project in bachelor’s degree. While the
energy efficiency is taken into consideration, the most important decision that should be
undertaken is the type of heating and cooling system that is to be installed. The system’s
operating efficiency mainly depends on the correct installation since it is responsible for the
equipment’s performance rating. This project helped me to understand the concept of heating,
ventilation and any type of cooling system.
CE 1.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
This project of Designing, Analysis and Development of Heating, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning System (HVAC) comprises of several important objectives. These objectives
are given below:
To understand the concept of heating, ventilation and any type of cooling system.
To design as well as analyze and develop a heating, ventilation and cooling system.

CE 1.2.3 My area of work
This was my first major project in my engineering career. I was extra cautious as well
as excited about this particular project. Since, this was my first major project in terms of
practical life; I was given the duty to research and study about the project details. I had to
research about the project and understand the entire project perfectly, without any type of
problems within the project. I had to get the idea absolutely clear so that no problem occurs
while executing this project. My next area of work was to make all the team members
understand about the project concept. I also had to make the project report.

CE 1.2.5 My responsibilities throughout the project
I had several significant as well as important responsibilities and duties in this
particular project. My first and the foremost responsibility was to document the complete
project. I even made the completed list of raw materials that were solely needed in this
project regularly. At the end of every working day, I reported to my project leader and gave
him the reports of regular routine. Furthermore, I even arranged for regular meetings with all
my project members and the project manager for understanding the progress of our project.
My other responsibility in this project was to assist my project manager in his work.

appropriate system installation. Improper design as well as improper installation of this
HVAC system can have destructive impacts on the energy bills and even personal comfort.
Inappropriate design as well as installation of any HVAC system could drastically degrade
the air quality. Thus, poorly designed as well as improperly installed air ducts could create
hazardous conditions, which might decrease personal comfort, reduce the quality of indoor
air, or even risk the health conditions of the people. The major features, which are needed to
obtain the project’s design efficiency mainly involve the system’s sizing for the particular
heating as well as cooling load being built; appropriate selection and also proper control
installation; accurately charging the particular unit with correct refrigerant’s amount; and
insulating as well as sealing all the ductwork.
Two specific kinds of heating systems are the most common that are being utilized.
They are the forced-air or radiant. The source of heat is either furnace that eventually burns
any gas, or any particular pump of electric heat. These furnaces are usually installed with the
centralized air conditioners. The heat pumps are responsible for providing both heating as
well as cooling. Some of the heating systems comprise of a heating system that is integrated
with water.

Figure 2: Components of Horizontal Flow Forced Air Systems
The heating systems that are radiant usually mix a water heater or heating pump with
piping, a central boiler, for transporting the steamed water. This heating is properly delivered
into the rooms within a house or building through the systems of radiant floor like piping that
is set under floor or radiant slabs or radiators. The most important benefits of this particular
system radiant heating are the incremented heat comfort, thus, increasing personal comfort
even at low temperature as well good heat zoning.
This heat pump is solely designed for moving heat from one fluid to other. This fluid
within the building is air; and the fluid that is outside can either be air or water. During the
summer, the heat from this inside air is being moved to outside fluid. During the winter, this
heat is undertaken from outside fluid and thus shifted to inside air. The heat pumps of air
source use the compression cycle of vapour to move the heat. This compressor within the
outside unit eventually pressurizes refrigerant that is being piped inside. The hot gas then
enters within the condensing coil.

Figure 3: Air Conditioner Vapour Compression Cycle
When the outside temperatures are between 25°F to 35°F, an accurately sized heat
pump could no longer meet the complete heating load. The particular temperature within
which the accurately sized heat pump could never meet heating load is known as balance
point. For providing heat for supplemental backup, most of the builders utilize coils of
electric resistance known as the strip heaters.

thus transferring it to outside. Both the systems usually utilize a specific cycle for vapour
compression. The outer part of any specific air conditioner is known as the condensing unit.
It is a four stepped process. They are given below:
i) The compressor within the outside unit solely pressurizes on a gaseous refrigerant.
This refrigerant eventually heats up during the process.
ii) The fans within the outdoor unit generally blow air across the pressurized and
heated gas present within condensing coil; then refrigerant gas cools down and condenses to a
liquid.
iii) The liquid that is pressurized is then piped inside towards the unit of air handling.
It enters into the expansion valve, where it can expand and cool.
iv) The liquid that is cold eventually circulates within the evaporator coils. The inside
air is then blown through the coils and cooled when the refrigerant heats up and evaporates.
The refrigerant, which has now turned into a gas, comes back to the particular outdoor unit.
The main advantage of this HVAC system is that it helps to cool the system without
any type of complexities.
CE 1.3.2 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
