In this case study, I have studied that a student got privilege due to his background. He was given
although he achieved low marks in the class. As far as the norms of scholarship are concerned,
students with high grades and impressive marks should be given scholarship amount and special
facilities (Shaw, 2010). Now in such a situation in order to give suggestions as per the ACS Code
of Professional Conduct and ACS Code of Ethics I need special guidance on the issues.
Following the ACS of Ethics and adhering to societal values like improving quality life, honesty,
professional development, competence and professionalism. In this situation, Honesty and
integrity in professional life may be emphasised and standards of right and wrong shall be
evaluated in relation to the professional life.
I would inform the manager about how a deserving candidate missed the opportunity only
because the particular student is from a privileged background. It is here a complete explanation
of the professional Code of Conduct shall be shared which is relevant for the particular business
area (Code of ethics, 2010).
A professional dilemma, however, could impact while selecting the wrong candidate over the
deserving student. Hence, in a polite way, stating the ACS Code of Ethics a request may be put
forward in a thought-provoking way to encourage rethinking on the issue and help the deserving
candidate in getting the right opportunity in career development (Portfolio., 2012).
In the situation three main types of ethical theories may be referred;
i. The “The duties or obligations position”
ii. The consequences of actions position
iii. The virtues positions
In this context, I have to follow the ‘doing your duty’ theory and address the issues in a planned
way so that the deserving candidate gets the position.
Here it may be mentioned that since the non-deserving candidate have not received good marks
in the examination, while on the other hand, another candidate has received more marks from
him; it is evident that the candidate who has scored high will be able to represent the institute in
a better way and help in enhancing the brand image. Parents will recognise student’s ability by
exploring his expertise and more students will enrol in future. On the other hand, this might not

be possible if the student who is not good in academics is given the scholarship (ACS code of
professional conduct and professional practice 2016). Hence, in a strategic way, I could convince
the manager regarding the decision taken on scholarship and encourage them to rethink the
decision.
