A LITERATURE REVIEW ON ICT MANAGEMENT 2
Project overview
Maria’s Aquariums have been experiencing a rapid growth and expansion that needs
technology changes if the business is to maintain its competitive edge. The firm was set up by
Maria some 25 years ago when she was selling fish directly from a hatchery on the Central Coast
in NSW. The business, however, expanded with time and three more outlets were launched in
Gosford, Chatswood, and Wollongong. Moreover, Raymond, Maria’s eldest son and the current
manager of the firm after Maria hopes to expand the business to update its brand and increase its
profitability.
Raymond believes that there would be a good demand for more retail outlets for the
business in Goulburn, Coffs Harbour, and Canberra. He also wishes to expand the business along
the east coast of NSW and nationally, in a longer term. While these changes facilitate the
development and launch of products, as well as the profitability of the business, they also need
integrated information technology system that will ensure a smooth operation within the firm
(Martínez-Rojas, Marín, & Vila, 2015).
Project scope
According to the case, the Aquariums firm comprises of four outlets including the
original place formally used by Maria as the hatchery and the three additional outlets as
mentioned in the previous sections in thesis. Together with the three outlets that need to be
expanded, the firm will now have seven retail headquarters. As evident in the case, it can be
noted that managing the firm will be quite hectic since the organization has several branches. For
the most, many significant business operations such as billing activities and daily sales are
conducted manually leading to inaccurate information. Various factors can be identified to be the

probable causes of inaccuracy like the erroneous balances shown on the Stock Cards. As a result,
the primary objective of this article is to propose an information system for easy operations
within the organization, this is done through a review of project management in ICT project in
light of Maria’s Aquariums that would ensure success of the firm.
Literature analysis
Before it dive in the literature review, this article will first explore the definition of
project management in ICT project. According to “the Handbook of project-based
management” project management in ICT project refer to the application of knowledge, skills,
techniques as well as tools to project an organization’s activities to meet or exceed the demands
of stakeholders as well as expectation of a project in ICT project (Pade, 2006). Meeting or
exceeding the demands of stakeholders involve the balancing of the competing needs including
time, cost, scope, and quality.
Various empirical studies have been reviewed with a goal of validating the success or
failure of project management in ICT projects and different results have been found from the
studies. Marnewick (2012) developed a project management plan quality index for evaluating
project management in ICT project. The author also used the same plan in evaluating an
enterprise success. As much as he found that a higher positive score of the project management
in ICT project with project is correlated with the success of an enterprise, the study was,
however, limited to the planning aspects of project management.
Turner (2014) also reviewed the relationship between a strategic project management in
ICT project and meeting the target date of project completion. The limiting factor in this study,
on the other hand, was that the measure of methodology was limited to only five aspects of

project management. Joslin, & Müller, (2015), however, in their “Relationships between a
project management methodology and project success in different project governance contexts”
examined the relationship between project management in ICT project and found that a greater
standardization of project management through information communication technology ICT
management. The authors therefore insinuate that enhanced strategies for project management in
ICT project are associated with a company’s success.
Methodology
This report is based on secondary sources. The sources were retrieved from a survey of
articles that was conducted for this study. Reference management applications used for gathering
information were Google scholar and EndNote. “ICT project management” was used as the key
term for collecting data for this study. Various articles were retrieved from the reference
management applications. However, the articles used for this report were limited to peer-
reviewed articles. Among the numerous articles that were collected, only eight articles which
were coherent with the subject of the study were analyzed.
The stated reference applications were the most preferred for this work because they are
useful as they helped in literature analysis. The articles chosen were peer-reviewed articles, the
articles which have been reviewed and approved by experts in the field of study, to ensure that
this review is of high quality.
Discussion
On basis of the literature review, it can be deduced that a proper project management in
ICT projects goes hand in glove with the success of the organization. The Aquariums firm,
therefore, need to implement a strategic project management in ICT projects in the planned

project for expanding the organization’s outlets and install information system to enhance the
productivity of the Aquarium as envisioned by Raymond. Agile framework is one of the most
known ICT methodologies involved in project planning in ICT project which is most preferable
for software development in IT projects. The approach was made for the projects that are not
well defined since it is geared towards information gathering (Hope, & Amdahl, 2011).
As such, it can be utilized in installing information system at the Aquariums as Raymond
needs a system that can ensure a repeat business from his customers, the ability to determine if
the acquired system is in stock from the head office rather than from the individual store, ability
to generate invoice from data held within the system, improved control over stock ordering and
replenishment as well as the technology to support all of the changes (Pretorius, Steyn, &
Jordaan, 2012). Research shows that agile methodology has become more important due to the
fact that increasing number of its users leverages it.
Conclusion
The objective of this review was to establish methodologies for the ICT project in
Maria’s Aquariums firm. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that project
management in ICT project is necessary for fast developing firms like aquariums (Murad, &
Cavana 2012). The organization need ICT system to manage its daily operations. The project
management in ICT project can be an important differentiating factor in the overall productivity
of the Aquariums.
