1DIGITAL COMMUNICATION ON THE ISSUE OF IMMIGRATION
The contemporary world of today has brought about major changes in the human society.
After the change in the course of political systems of the world with the demise of the Soviet
Union, the territorial borders of the states were opened up to all the people across the globe. This
gave birth to the idea of globalization and migration. The article written by Harlow and Guo
titled “Will the Revolution be Tweeted or Facebooked? Using Digital Communication Tools in
Immigrant Activism” discusses about how the field of digital communication is used to promote
important humanitarian issues. This essay seeks to understand the article as written by the author
and also proposes to critically analyze it.
The article talks about the impact of digital communication in the field of activism. The
author begins the article by looking in to an act of defiance that occurred in the year 2006 where
around one hundred thousand students walked out of their classrooms as a sign of protest against
the immigration laws (Harlow & Guo, 2014). Through the article the author believes that
immigration laws in the United States is quite regressive in nature due to the actions of the policy
makers. Although the author makes some good points, the people have taken resort to the digital
media in order to spread awareness about such regressive immigration laws in order to bring
about some degree of changes.
The interpretation made by the author with regard to the importance of digital
communication is that the issue of immigration has assumed great significance in the
contemporary times (Harlow & Guo, 2014). The author offers a countering view and
recommends that the main objective of the people engaged in such activities related to activism
is to bring about an economic or social or some political changes in the society for the betterment
of the population.
In the end, the author concludes that in the article is that digital communication has been

effective in bringing about some level of awareness among the people. The purpose of the text is
the issue of immigration. The author offers some interesting evidence to prove his point.
However, it was observed in the article that although the platform of digital media is able to
spread awareness, it is not effective enough to accumulate the people in one place to participate
in a protest (Harlow & Guo, 2014). In addition, some bias was detected. For example, the
participation of the people depends upon the personal connection among the individuals who
would be able to bring about such revolution.
Although countering views were presented, the strength of the article is that the author
has been able to effectively analyze the concerning issue of immigration from a humanist point
of view. The author assumes that the United States of America which is one of the most liberal
nation states of the world but this country has imposed a lot of restrictions in the free movement
of the people. In this respect, the growth of the digital communication has been able to bring
about a change in the society (Harlow & Guo, 2014). In the end the issue of activism has been
propagated in an effective manner through this digital media which has been able to tackle the
regressive policies of immigration.
