also experienced these changes. Quality clinical services and better living conditions are evident
improvements which in turn lead to an increased lifespan among individuals. This results in a
shift in demographics since it consequently leads to increased number of older persons in the
society. These changes have significant effects on the demand and supply of healthcare services
which consequently affects the required size of healthcare workforce in the States.
(I) Introduction
Thesis: In the United States, quality clinical services and better living conditions are
evident improvements which in turn lead to an increased lifespan among individuals. This leads
to a shift in demographics leading to great number of an aged population in general and also a
higher percentage of old persons in the workforce. These changes pose significant impacts on the
demand and supply of healthcare services which consequently affects the size of healthcare
workforce in the States.
(II) Effects of the increased lifespan and disease patterns on healthcare system
The increased lifespan among the population means a higher number of aged persons,
whose demand for healthcare services is relevantly high. This is attributed to mainly their
prevalence to contract various chronic diseases and hence a growing disease burden

(Dall et.al 2013) This necessitates close monitoring for effective diagnosis and
management of those medical conditions. This influences the demand and supply of healthcare
and consequently calls for an increase in the healthcare labor force.
(III) Challenges posed by demographic changes to healthcare workforce
Demographic deviations present some challenges to the nursing workforce relating to
demand for healthcare services and staff. Such challenges that are brought about by demographic
changes include shortage in the number of required healthcare providers, uncertain healthcare
reforms and aging baby boomers (Buerhauset.al 2017). Again the accelerating rate of registered
nurse retirees is making it more difficult to cater for the health needs of the people in totality.
(a)Baby boomers have increasingly created a burden to health practitioners. This is a
challenge as the healthcare system may not be ready to sufficiently meet the intensifying needs
of the baby boomers.
(b) Multiple chronic illnesses, racial/ethnic diversity workforce, caregiver burden, and
optimal immobility are among other challenges posed by demographic changes.
(c) Underrepresentation of various demographic groups as a major concern affecting
healthcare delivery.
(IV) Preparing the healthcare workforce to meet health care needs
(a) The need to promote diversity among health care professionals in response to the
current demographic shifts in the nation's population (Phillips & Malone2014).
(b) The implications of demographics transformations on the diversity of the healthcare
workforce (Appelbaum, 2017).

In conclusion quality clinical services and better living conditions in the US has led to the
demographic deviations through increased lifespan among the population. This has resulted to
more elderly persons in the society which in turn implicates the healthcare system by raising the
demand for healthcare services and practitioners. Demographic changes have also resulted to the
rise of baby boomers in the U.S causing an acute shortage of practitioners.
