IMPACT OF SCREENING ON EMPLOYEE RETENTION IN ALDI
SECTION 1
INTRODUCTION
Employee retention is the process of an organization to retain its employees. This
depends upon the organizational ability to retain its employees in the organization and its
workforce. It depends upon the strategy of the organization to follow a method that helps to the
organization retaining its employees. In an organization, there are low-performing employees
and high-performing employees. The retention process mainly includes the retention of the high-
performing employees, as they are the valuable and contributing employees in the firm. Less
satisfaction and a lack of commitment towards the organizational structure could cause the
withdrawal of employees and they start to search for other opportunities in different firms. The
other issues for which a company suffers from employee retention are that employee turnover,
low employee morale, lack of recognition, less growth in career path and poor manager-
employee relationship (Brody, Perri, & Van Buren, 2015).
Aldi, a supermarket brand is facing the problems associated with employee retention.
Due to this problem faced by the brand Aldi, there is lack in organizational productivity.
Naturally, the organizational productivity has been damaged, as the employees are not retained
in the organization. In this organization, there is high frequency of employee turnover as the
organization focuses on profitability and high extent of performance. The problems related to
this have been identified as the organization Aldi has focused on the faulty acquisition and
related screening process. Due to faulty selection process, the organization is facing problems
related to leadership, group dynamics and teamwork. The organization is failed in measuring
values of the candidates and understanding of the employees’ approach and KSA factors. The

organization needs an efficient work force sourcing strategies that would help in employee
retention.
The purpose of this assignment is to manage a complete research proposal, which is
related to the employee retention procedure in the Aldi as the organization is facing problems
related to that. The employee retention will also help the organization to improve its productivity
and the overall business. As the current employee screening procedure is not helping in the
employee retention in the organization, a study towards that is also conducted. The proposal will
focus on the impact of the screening process on the employee retention with reference to the case
study of Aldi, which is a super brand in the market.
The structure of this assignment is as follows. The problem statements, research
objectives, justification of the proposal and the expected research outcome will follow the
introduction part and fall under section one. The section two will consist with conceptual
framework, research hypothesis and research methodology. The third section will cover the
organization of the study and the Gantt chart and the required budget for carrying out the
proposal.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Employee retention is a phenomenon of decreasing the number of employees in an
organization or the employees are not willing to stay in the organization. The retention process
affects on the organizational overall productivity, as employees are the valuable and most
important part of an organization. The organization should minimize the employees’ turnover
rate or search for an effective employee. The process of acquisition and screening should not be

could create lack in leadership, teamwork spirit and low level of manager-employee relationship.
The organization should identify the root cause of the employee retention issue and then it
should implement a strategy for retaining it. Even, the organization could develop programs that
would help to heighten the employee retention rate (Li et al., 2014).
The supermarket brands could even fall under the problems related to employee
retention. In the case study, the brand Aldi is facing problems like employee retention and faulty
acquisition in the employee screening process. The problems in employee retention would
directly affect the organizational productivity, as this would automatically hamper the
organizational workforce. The employee turnover in the Aldi group could happen due to faulty
acquisition and low level of screening process. The Aldi group is suffering problems like,
employee retention. The effective and appropriate employee can work effectively within the
organizational structure. However, the screening process needs to be improved that would help
in retention of the employees in the organization.
In such context, it becomes crucial to understand and analyze what went wrong for the
Aldi group in case of its employee retention. This study will fulfill the gap with empirical
evidences of the impact of screening process that would help in employee retention. Also, the
strategy taken by Aldi to improve the screening process and the issues faced by the Aldi group in
the screening process and employee retention will be discussed. However, the screening process
has helped or not in the employee retention will also be researched. This is done so that the Aldi
group in future can improve in the employee retention and employee screening process.

screening procedure on the employee retention with reference to the case study of Aldi, which is
a establishing super market brand. The research will also focus on the strategies that the Aldi
group has followed to improve the screening procedure. More specifically the proposal aims to
answer the following questions:

process?
RQ2: Has the screening process of Aldi helped in improvement the controlling process
of employee turnover and attrition?
RQ3: What are the issues faced by the Aldi group in the screening process and employee

productivity.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE RESEARCH
Employee retention has been the most crucial problem in almost all the industries and has
a direct effect on the production of the company. Aldi is also facing the similar problem of lack
of employee retention in its organization, affecting its productivity in every way. There has been
incidents of huge employee turnovers in certain years that has affected the total profitability of

the business and its growth. These problems in the organization were due to ineffectiveness of
the screening technology used by the company to judge its employees before hiring them in their
organization. Such faulty screening process has lead to other issues in the organization such as
lack of coordination between the employees and the leaders, failure of teamwork and others.
Thus, the research will be conducted for Aldi to sole their issue of employee retention that will
help them retain their old employees as well as hire better employees. For the purpose various
literature will be reviewed o the benefits and methods of screening process while hiring
employees in Aldi. The researcher will also take a feedback from the managers of the
organization. The feedback that will be received will suggest few strategies and methods that can
be adopted to introduce screening in Aldi effectively (Brown, Thomas & Bosselman, 2015).
The organization will get various benefits from the proposed research on increased
employee retention from screening. Some of the benefits being:
The findings of the research will help the organization will be able to reduce the risk of
hiring a wrong and inappropriate employee
The proposal will help the company to carry out effective research on this ground in
future recruitment.
Most important is that screening helps in retaining employees for longer period of time as
most of them are hired because they are perfect for the role
Retention on other hand will allow the company to reduce the cost they incurred from
huge employee turnover

EXPECTED RESEARCH OUTCOME
The outcome of the proposal will help in offering a structure through which the entity can
take further research, which in turn can help them form strategies and adopt methods though
which they can carry out screening activity that was lacking in the organization. From the
response, that the researcher will get from the manager of Aldi and literature readings will give a
contradictory picture about the usefulness of screening in recruitment (Shrivastava, Shrivastava
& Ramasamy, 2014). However, it will help the company analyze the outcome and decide on the
strategies they need to adopt in future for recruiting desired employees in the business. Loss of
employees and huge employee turnover has a long run negative effect on the organization such
as lower productivity and low profitability (Stoughton, Thompson & Meade, 2015). The
recruitment that takes place in Aldi includes various processes and steps such as interview,
communication test and others. All these process will also influence the result of the research.
The research needs to answer all the questions that are asked in the proposal with the help of
information that is obtained from managers and past literature. The result will then analyzed and
framed to solve the problem that has been suggested in the proposal. The research that will be
conducted to solve the problem of ineffective screening process will also help other companies
that are experiencing huge employee turnovers.
SECTION 2

effective leadership relationship, teamwork togetherness and others (Terera & Ngirande, 2014).
This was the result of the lack of competency that the company has maintained in recognizing
the value of the employees. The study on this ground was important because employees face a
lot of challenges as human resource and competencies of the task. This makes it important for
the organization to focus effectively on the screening process of employees (Das and Baruah,
2013). Pre recruitment screening is the most effective as it allow the organization to get various
benefits such as suitable applicants for the job role, hardworking workers and higher
productivity. It has been evident that about 15 percent of the resumes that are submitted offer
inaccurate information about abilities, skills and educational qualification. This has lead to
various problems affecting the turnover rate of huge companies like Aldi (Ahmad, Tariq &
Hussain, 2015). The implementation of pre employment screening test has started in the early
80s in which the companies started conducting drug test. Since the concept and its benefits
started becoming evident. It was seen that the candidates that was addicted towards certain kinds
of drugs dismissed themselves from applying in those companies. This resulted in better
applicant in those entities. Similar kind of result might occur of Aldi takes up pre recruitment
screening process. Another kind of screening was background check of candidates, which the
companies took up and the result of the investment was seen, on the quality of employees they
hired after the screening. Along with these, there are other kinds of screening test that can also be
employed for determining the quality of employee being hired (Bode, Singh & Rogan 2015).

Reduction in chances of negligent in hiring will also be reduced by the company, which
directly affects he employers (Jehanzeb & Bashir, 2013). Some of the programs that the
company can adopt for reducing the negligent issues are:
Background check test according to the responsibility of the job role (Uggen et al., 2014)
Questioning the candidates for any kind of gaps in their resume
Verifying the employee and their education qualification according to the job
requirement
Take all necessary steps required to evaluate the candidate and escape from employing
undeserving candidate
The suitable elements required for the organization for effective background check are:

A written application of the employee stating its convenience of working with the
organization after knowing his/her job role
Questioning the candidates in a room regarding the credentials of their resume
Enquiring about the personal details about the candidates
Publishing the check that the organization will conduct before the recruitment to filter out
the unsuitable employees
Some of the concepts about screening and retention is important for Aldi to know in order to
implement it n their organization (Bonafede et al., 2015).
Viewing the problem statement that has been proposed in the research objectives, some
of the research hypothesis can be stated:
H(1): Screening process has helped increased the employee retention rate in Aldi
H(2): Screening process has not improved the employee retention rate in Aldi
In the above two hypothesis H(1) is the Null hypothesis and H(2) is the alternative hypothesis
(Murphy, Myors & Wolach, 2014).
METHODOLOGY
The research will undertake the following research in regards to effectively
analyze the situation state din the proposal and reach a desired result (Silverman, 2016).
Literature Review: various kinds of literature will be analyzed on employee screening
and effect on retention that are available in Google Scholar, journals and articles. These
literatures are the statement offered by past scholars on this ground that can prove to be
useful for research o Aldi’s situation. A thematic type of analysis will be conducted in

order to know the extent to which screening has always benefitted employee retention in
business. These type of data sources will be secondary data analysis that the researcher
will gather information from (Choy, 2014).
Data and surveys/Questionnaires
Data will be collected from numerous sources that will be summarized to offer a
set of idea about the effect of screening on increasing the retention of employee and
reducing the employee turnover of the organization. These data will be validated before
implementing it in the research purpose. Data collection and survey are crucial for
providing accuracy to the research that the researcher wants to gain. Data can be
collected from both primary as well as secondary sources (Flick, 2015).
In conducting the secondary research, various literatures from articles, books and
other authentic sources will be analyzed. While for primary survey, both qualitative and
quantitative analysis will be conducted with the help of various processes. Primary data
will help the researcher explore the aspects of employee retention and quality of workers.
For carrying out qualitative research, an interview will be conducted with the help of
interview questionnaire (Panneerselvam, 2014). There will be both open and closed
ended questions that will be answered by the employees and managers of the company
about their views and application of this idea in Aldi. For the interview purpose 100
employees and 3 managers will be selected such as the HR manager, Marketing and Sales
manager and General manager. The interview will be conducted with the employees and
managers through online mode and help the researcher to collect effective and useful
data. For the interview process the employees will be selected through simple random
sampling that will define the whole population to be surveyed (Owen, 2014).
