Introduction
The improvement of the health status of the indigenous people of Australia has been a
widespread challenge for the Government of the country for a long time. The indigenous people
of Australia are those who has descended from different other groups. These groups were present
in the Australia and nearby islands. The social determinant theory recognizes the health of the
population, and various interconnected social factors which eventually determine the inequalities
among the population. The social determinants which are responsible for variations of heath in
Australia are the access of the primary healthcare as well as disorganized infrastructure of health.
Here, the episode describes the effect of social determinants on Australian Aboriginal people.
The aboriginal peoples usually face different irrelevant questions from different people. This
assignment is going to explain about the narratives described in the video. Moreover, the social
determinants of health which are identified in the chosen video and a research paper has been
described in details in this report.
Description of the episode
There were ten guests in the video; all of the guests were aboriginal people of Australia.
All of them were asked the same questions to differentiate the ideologies of all of them. The
guests of the interview were from different communities, and both black and white-skinned
people were selected for the interview. The first question of the conversation was what they
would like to call themselves and which term suits them the most in-between ‘aboriginal,
aborigine and indigenous’. The views of all of the people were not the same as this question.
Some of them preferred to call them to be aboriginal, while some of the guests preferred to invite
them to be indigenous people (Marmot, 2017). However, all of them accepted that most of the

people call the indigenous people by irrelevant names. The origin of all of them was different,
but as they are residing in Australia, they preferred to invite them to be Australian. After this
question, they were asked about the benefits that they have received from the Government. All of
the guests responded in the same way. All of them accepted that they had been deprived of most
of the Government facilities. They agreed that there are still some communities which suffer
from a shortage of water but still do not receive any facility. They had to work hard to earn their
livings. Usually, the native people of the country consider the indigenous people to be alcoholic,
but the answers of all of them were almost the same (Pockett & Beddoe, 2017). All aboriginal
people didn't need to be alcoholic; they used to drink to console themselves because of their
sufferings (Marmot, 2017).
Social determinants of health
The guests of the interview identified the social determinants which impact their health
outcomes. They agreed that the social determinants of health affect health outcomes in a negative
way. The most important cause of reducing health outcomes was poor education and literacy.
The less income decreases the access of the healthcare services (Fisher et al., 2016). They
accepted that many of the aboriginal people are educated. On the contrary, there are several
communities who do not even receive the primary level of education (Kolahdooz et al., 2015)
Racism is one of the factors which deprive the aboriginal people from their rights. Racism acts as
a stressor which affects both the mental and the physical health of the aboriginal people. The
indigenous women suffer from severe crime victims. People mostly claim that the aboriginal
people receive several benefits from the Government, but according to the interview, it was
found that none of them received the minimum of the Government facilities. Rather than
accepting the Government facilities, the Government has been taken away the lands of the

indigenous people (Andermann, 2016). The other reason for the indigenous people to suffer
much was that the Government was speaking about poverty while the aboriginal people were
speaking of rights. Poverty has been the considered as the principal reason for lack of self-
determination, marginalization and lack of decision making process.
The research paper

This research paper has been selected for comparing and contrasting the social
determinants derived from the episode. The article states that the proper researches are conducted
about the discourse of the indigenous people which justifies and benefits the indigenous people
of the country. The researchers of the papers are emphasizing on the fact that the voice of the
indigenous Australians should be listened and understood. They need to work collaboratively
and work according to the requirement priorities. An accurate and systemic assessment strategy
is essential for providing benefits to the indigenous people. The research paper has emphasized
on the need to undertake researches on the indigenous people to know their grievances and
demands. It can be stated that the indigenous people need to raise their voice to receive the
benefits and the rights that have been determined for them. The same thing has been described in
the video where several people were interviewed to know how they feel about the inequalities of
health benefits. The research paper deals with the needs to conduct researches about the health
outcomes of the indigenous people and the video conducted as research which conducted
interviews which reflected the original views of the indigenous peoples. The indigenous

researchers reformed the indigenous health research practices to achieve the benefits of as much
as possible. The research paper did not directly involve any person but tried to emphasize how
social determinants had affected the indigenous people.
Conclusion
This assignment dealt with the impacts of social determinants on the aboriginal people.
The aboriginal people are being deprived of all Government facilities that the other people are
receiving. The sufferings of the indigenous people will never decrease if the Government do not
start taking necessary steps to improve the health conditions of the indigenous peoples. As they
are residing with other people in the same country they must also receive the same benefits as
other people are receiving.
