Research Project: Impact of Tourism on Hospitality Sector

This research project investigates the impact of tourism development on the hospitality sector, focusing on a case study of Holiday Inn. The study explores the factors influencing tourism, the rationale behind the research, and the research methodology employed, including research philosophy, approach, design, and data collection methods. A critical literature review examines the relationship between tourism and hospitality, the effects of tourism development on the hospitality sector, and the impact on the economy. Data findings, analysis, and discussion, based on a questionnaire administered to 15 respondents, reveal Holiday Inn's awareness of tourism development, the measures taken to progress, and the benefits derived from tourism. The research also assesses Holiday Inn's efforts towards sustainable tourism and the impact of changing tourism factors on its operations. The report concludes with recommendations and areas for further consideration, providing insights into how the hospitality sector can adapt to and benefit from tourism development.

INTRODUCTION:

Background:
Hospitality sector is dependent on tourism development. It is because growth and
development of tourism will lead to increase in sales and profit of hotels. In addition, it is very
important for hospitality sector to sustain in this fluctuating era of tourism development. There
are many changes occurring in tourism sector (Rabin and Yue, 2016). This is affecting the hotel
growth.
Besides this, there has been both positive and negative impact on the hospitality sector. It
is because they both are interrelated to each other. The internal and external factors affects play a
crucial role in tourism development. Thus, it is essential to analyse changes that has been
occurred to take proper actions -. Moreover, operations of hotels depend on external factors such
as legal, social, technological, etc. The functions that have been laid down by hotel will have a
great impact on tourism development.
Aim – To identify impact of change in tourism factors on hospitality sector- A case study on
Holiday Inn
Objectives:
 To identify impact of change in tourism factors on hospitality sector

 To recommend ways through which impact can be minimised
Research questions
 What is the role of tourism development in hospitality sector ?
 How sustainable tourism can be maintained by hospitality sector?
Resource Implications- Research is conducted by using several resources that depends on the
areas of research. Therefore, proper determination and identification of resources are necessary.
It will help in conducting research in smooth way and getting specific outcomes (Curdt and

Hoffmeister, 2015) For present research method used is activity based costing. Along with this,
Gantt chart is used that will specify time frame. With this researcher can allocate time to each
activity. Data will be collected by using secondary method.
1.2 Factors that contribute to the process of research
Rationale of research- While conducting research, several factors must be considered. This is
because it helps in analyzing about research that is being conducted. The present research is
based on factor that researcher wants to explore his knowledge in this field. He wants to identify
what factors affects tourism development in hospitality sector. The second reason for selecting
this topic is how development in tourism will lead to growth of hospitality sector.
1.4 Produce a research project specification
Research methodology helps in conducting research in effective manner. It defines
procedure and methods that will be used. This makes it easy for the researcher to follow methods
step by step. The research methodology is described below:-
Research Philosophy –there are two research philosophies such as positivism and
interpretvitism. The present research will use positivism philosophy as it will focus on achieving
goals and objectives.
Research Approach – Research Approach Helps in Identifying the Research Technique to be
used. Usually, there are two research approaches used, that is inductive and deductive. Present
research will use inductive approach (Fresa, Justrell and Prandoni, 2015) This will help
researcher in collecting and analyzing data easily. Also, data used will be based on aims and
objectives.
Research Design – It consists of qualitative and quantitative. In present research, researcher will
use qualitative design. It will help in effective analysis of data so that specific results can be
generated.
Data Collection- It plays a crucial role in conducting research because outcomes completely
depend on collection of data. Primary and secondary methods are used in collecting data. In this
research, data will be collected by using primary method with the help of questionnaire.

Sampling of Data- After collecting data, sample size is decided. It helps in collecting more
precise and specific data. There are many methods of selecting sample size. The researcher
selects 10 respondents by Random Sampling Method.

There are different types of services available to people in tourism sector. These services
cover a large range of area in which it is provided. According to Morgan, Cuskelly and Moni,
2014 tourism development, it refers to improve hospitality services in order to attract more
people. The overall improvement in tourism services help in creating a better image. It also leads
to generate more revenues and sustaining in the market. Hospitality sector plays a vital role in
providing effective services to people.
As per the view of Smith-Merry and Walton, 2014 it is very essential for hotel to
develop services. This will be beneficial for them in promoting sustainable tourism. Hospitality
sector helps in the development of tourism because functions and operations depend on this.
Growth in hospitality will automatically lead to tourism development. However, there are several
factors that directly affect tourisms and hospitality sector.
Impact of tourism development on hospitality sector
According to Koopman, Skeet and de Graaff, 2014 tourism sector revolves around
various factors. This is because those factors are directly linked to it. In addition, on the basis of
these operations of hospitality sector is based on. The major area in which development occurs in
expansion of services. With the growth in tourism, different types of services are developed.
These services include infrastructure, travel, accommodation, etc.
As elucidated by Bausman and Ward, 2015 people are also attracted by this. It makes it
easier for them to visit different places. Increase in range of service allows people to travel. On
the contrary it is said by Rabin and Yue, 2016 that internal and external factor has great impact
on hospitality sector. They highly affect the operations and growth. In addition, a change in them
will force hotels to modify their services. It will result in developing new products and
improving quality of services.. The area in which development has been made helps in
determining what changes has to be done.
Effect on economy

As said by Curdt and Hoffmeister, 2015 the tourism sector highly contribute in GDP of
country. It helps in economic growth of country. There are vast number of opportunities
available for organisation operating in tourism sector. This also benefit hospitality sector in term
of surviving. It provided them a platform through which services can be developed. According to
.Fresa, Justrell and Prandoni, 2015 there has been positive impact of tourism development of
economy. It is because it has lead to improvements in quality of service that has attracted a lot of
people to travel. Moreover, another advantage it has provided is meeting needs of customers. As
elucidated by Morgan, Cuskelly and Moni, 2014 now services are provided y identifying needs
of people. Due to change in taste and preference of customer hospitality sector is forced to offer
various types of services. Furthermore, due to change in environmental factor

hospitality sector. Changes in laws and regulations is forcing tourism sector to develop different
policies. This has affected operations of hotels and other services. Also, fluctuations in economic
situations of nations has limited the growth of hospitality sector. They are not able offer services
in wide range of areas. This is the negative point of tourism development. But on the other hand
it is elucidated by Fresa, Justrell and Prandoni, 2015 that due to development in services,
sustainable tourism has emerged. It has provided a platform to hospitality sector to get involved
in providing services related to this. It has enabled their growth and attracted people towards it.
This also benefit hospitality sector in term of surviving. It provided them a platform through
which services can be developed.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:

There are different resources required in conducting research. For this research, human
resource is required to collect and analyse data. Also, financial resource is required in purchasing

items such stationery, etc. besides this, physical resources that includes software is required in
analysing data and developing presentation.

3.1Record and collate relevant data
Research is evaluated by using formative and summative techniques. Generally,
formative is used for achieving aims and objectives while summative gives final results. In this
formative technique is used that will help researcher to attain his or her aims and objectives.
Theme 1: Holiday Inn aware about tourism development

Findings and analysis- As per the research conducted regarding tourism development in
hospitality sector. For this questionnaire was given to 15 respondents. By collecting data it was
identified that 8 said that Holiday Inn is aware about developments in tourism sector, 3 said no
and 4 were not sure about this. Therefore, it can be said that Holiday Inn is aware about
developments in tourism sector.

Findings and analysis- the researcher in order to achieve aims and objectives conducted
research in Holiday Inn. For this 15 respondents were selected and data was collected by
questionnaire. It was identified that 7 said Holiday Inn is using social media to progress towards
tourism development. 5 said that seminars and campaigns were organised and 3 said services has
been developed. Thus, it can be concluded from this that Holiday Inn is taking effective
measures for tourism development.
