Literature Review-
Concept and meaning of workplace or employment discrimination
According to Berrey, Nelson and Nielsen, (2017) workplace discrimination is illegal act or
way to discriminate applicants in company who some times come late and those who are not highly
qualified. In business, workers treat other people in negative way, they make differences based on
disability, religion, cast, skin colour and other characteristics which directly affects morale and job
abilities of applicants. Discriminate in working areas where number of workers performing
together, is based on certain prejudices. When manager take favour of some employees and treat

other differently because they possess different features, it affects mental well-being of person and
simply define the form of discrimination. Direct discriminate in workplace happen when someone
in company is treated less favourably than other staff members. It also occurs due to many reasons
for example, when firm pay some applicants less than other workers for no good reason, when
management do not make reasonable adjustment for disable candidates in working areas, or when
leaders support only those applicants how complete their qualification through high profile
academy.
Argued by Ozeren, (2014) indirect discrimination is more power full than direct
discrimination workplace. It directly affects physical and mental health of person, this type of
discrimination occurs when certain regulations and rules put on few group members at
disadvantage. For example, when manager insists all workers must work Sunday, this could be seen
as discriminating against those people who are Christians and go for worship on that particular day.
In simple words, when leaders, manager and co-workers discriminate other people on one of these
grounds that is marriage, partnership, maternity or pregnancy, belief and sex, that person make
complain against discriminator and even they can take legal action against them which is not
appropriate and suitable for professional career as well as personal. The form of discrimination is
based upon equal pay, national language, compensation and age. Victimization, harassment, direct
and indirect discrimination are the four kinds of discrimination that can happen in workplace.
Unfair treatment is also considered as favouritism that mean number of things include in it.
A manager take dislike to specific worker and make their life difficult, unfairly criticizing its work.
As per view of Hagelskamp and Hughes, (2014) inequality and unfair treatment is discriminating
practices conducted by many people due to hold high power. The concept of discriminations is
quite simple, but hard to face. Most of the people face discriminatory activities while they work in
company operate business at global level. Sometime leader takes favour of some workers, they
provide training effectively to only one group of individual and less focus on another team
members. Gassman-Pines, (2015) stated that perceived discrimination in workplace also found to
have negative affects on each applicants mind and body mainly blood pressure, psychological
distress, heart disease and self reported health. Women mostly experience these illegal activity
while doing job which goes out of their physical limitation. Unlike individual level, inequality at
team level induce feeling of mistrust and fear within group discriminated which often outcomes in
inhibited performance, Age discrimination is harmful rather than the another forms.
Impact of workplace discrimination on staff in organization while performing at global level
Equality is equal or fair treatment of authority towards their workers regardless of their
race, age and others things. According to Adesoye and et.al., (2017) equality plays vital role in

growth of staff, when management make assure people are getting equal opportunities, they
enhance workers performance and boost up morale as well. But inequality harm positive
environment around workplace where, company workers take legal actions against their
management on grounds of gender and age discrimination after employer cut people pay rates for
weekend and night shifts. In firm sometimes, most of the people are not treating well from their
leaders, they do not get good respond through them which drop productivity and performance level
rather than before. Inequality is part of discrimination, where employees feel depressed and
unsatisfied with their job. For example, organization increased wages for all employees how began
their employment before few months ago, but at same time firm do not increased the salary
package of those workers how also began work in same month because they complete qualification
in low profile education institutes. It is one of the discrimination activity which straitly impact on
mental well-being of human and cause of stress. While performing at global level, workers faced
several discrimination activities that negatively affects on their productivity and working abilities.
Any workers who feel and experience they have been discriminated against in workplace they can
place complaint easily.
Harassment is unwelcome conduct that is sexual or discriminatory in nature, it can be
served, condition or continuous of employment. Offermann and et.al., (2014) contradict that
differences based on disability is another discrimination action that place into mind of particular
worker and make them unhappy with their job role in company. Effects are not limited to mental
but also physical effects on staff include depression and loss of self-confidence leading to workers
becoming hostile, even most of the candidates in company attempt suicide because discrimination
which is one of the serious concern. Most of the people are disabled in many firms where they need
some additional support through management, when authority do not make any arrangements for
disable applicant it is considered as discriminatory action that impacts person health and morale.
Without equality and diversity staff cannot be able to contribute in procedure of achieving business
goals and objective, that create many issues for business as to sustain for longer into new market.
Employees with some disabilities receive fair treatment which make them capable to work
effectively just like the others.
As per view of Bal, Kooij and Rousseau, (2015) age discrimination make negative impact
on person mental well- being, they do not work appropriately and effectively in workplace. It
substantially detrimental impact on working environment of business, this kind of discrimination
come in different forms such as refusing to recruit older workers, fire older staff and treat old
employees differently than recent younger staff. Victim suffers a lot after experiencing
discrimination in workplace, they fail to consider that other workers may be impacted as well. High

level of stress, mistrust and depression are negative emotions that person feel after discriminatory.
These emotions and feeling do not just outcome in cloud of bad feelings, it also defines there can
be reduced team work, productivity, morale, focus and communication as result of this problematic
atmosphere.
Discriminatory practices negatively affects job satisfaction of all workers, not limited on
who are discriminated against.
Various ways to overcome negative impact of discrimination in working area
As discussed by Hirsh, (2014) in order to build strong team in workplace and increase
productivity company need to create positive environment where each and every member feel free
to share their ideas and express feeling in front of senior without any threat. There are different
types of ways which can be used by firm to overcome negative impact of workplace discrimination
over all its staff members. Trust building according to author is the best and most appropriate way
to cope up with discrimination in business. Accordant to this procedure management bring their all
workers together, provide fair treatment and create trust based on exercises and activities. Exiting
employees can take opinion of new applicants that helps to create positive environment around
workplace. All the members can share information related to work effectively which make strong
team, in which every one is able to achieve common goal.
Stamarski and Son Hing, (2015) stated that Clarity of role is a better way more than the
other ways can used by company to reduce workplace discrimination. Role clarity prevent from
misunderstanding among group of individual, it also helps to reduce discrimination that enhance
productivity of applicants. It is the level to which staff have clear understanding of their
responsibilities, tasks and procedures at work. Clarity means that management do not make any
differences between their older and younger workers in firm, they provide task equally and also
divide accountabilities without discrimination. High role clarity supports lead to higher employees'
performance within business. It is a essential precursor of productivity, lack of role clarity cause
confusion and stress which affect people health. Workers who is a role clarity by manager are more
efficient and effective at work than others who have role ambiguity.
Baur and et.al., (2018) elucidated that workplace discrimination is major concern where
management of company take actions against it as soon as possible, they can choose the best way to
reduce it in workplace for longer period. Equal opportunity is appropriate method can used by firm
and implement in their practices for betterment of business. This technique refer to policy of
providing everyone same opportunities for employment, promotion, pay without discriminating
against specific groups, organizations is required to create positive and equal opportunity for men
and women without placing any differences on grounds. It helps to reduce discrimination, reduce

risk of high employee turn over and also support to retain talented applicants within business for
long term period. EEO contribute to reduce potential obstacles that prevent certain team of
individual from discriminatory activities in workplace. Equal employment practices is very
essential for both company and individuals. It plays major role in creating health and creative
environment, it helps workers feel they are being treated equally and fairly which increase level of
commitment, loyalty and satisfaction to their staff.
Recommendation to reduce or band the workplace discrimination in company
As per view of Di Marco and et.al., (2016) equal pay is recommended to organization that
helps to reduce discrimination in workplace and boost up the morale and productivity of all
workers. Firm must pay all staff members equally without making any differences and grounds of
discrimination, it requires that employers pay employees fairly for same job role despite person's
age, religion, race etc. equal pay provide many benefits for example same pay for women and men
at workplace is greater sense of workers morale. By paying applicants equal of what company pay
to male staff member for same work, they can communicate powerful content about gender
equality. More essentially, employer directly affecting personal and professional lives of females
employees because of high value which they place on its worth.
Ruggs and et.al., (2015) contradict that recruitment should not be based on age differences,
in company human resource department hire applicants equally or fairly without considering age
gap which is beneficial for overall business position and reputation in marketplace. When they hire
candidates of all age they get those people who have good experience of work which they can use
to achieve positive outcomes. Employee under any age can apply for job in firm, employer consider
their qualification and skills despite age which is not appropriate and ethical way. All people getting
hired, recruitment policies are not put any age limits on person's job eligibility. Without age
discrimination employer hire talented and skilled labour effectively, who have greater experience of
working in multinational companies.
According to Cavanagh and et.al., (2017) arrangement for disable people in workplace
create positive image of business in mind of their workers as well as consumers. Firm consider
whether expert suggestion is required to set the working environment of disable applicants in
workplace. Employer shows some concern towards employees with disabilities, they arrange
required resources and support. They mostly focus on diversity, create diverse workplace, educate
all workers about discriminatory free activities and communicate with all the members in
workplace in context of increasing productivity. Leader give their full support to disable candidates
in its work to complete task on time effectively without consuming time. All above things help to
sustain business for longer period of time and also make them capable to retain skilled staff

individual with company for ever.
Benefits, bonuses and promotions is awarded based upon applicants performance and
qualification on job, when employee rapidly consider promotions being provided on basis of race,
gender and other discriminatory elements, person driver to advance within company or perform to
best of their ability is negatively impacted.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
It comprises of a variety of tools and techniques that can be used by the researcher for the
purpose of conducting research in a successful and meaningful manner. These tools and techniques
have been developed and discussed below:
Document Page
Research Type
There are two major types of research that can be conducted by the researcher i.e.
qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research involve collection of theories and facts and figures
that are used for interpretation and analysis of the human tendencies whereas quantitative research
involves collection of numerical data which is then interpreted using statistical tools and other tools
like excel etc. In the current research, the research has selected qualitative technique since the data
collected by the researcher is purely related to various facts and theories of humans (Flick, 2018).
The research is conducted on the employees and work culture of Tesco, therefore, the qualitative
research will assist in conducting research in a more relevant manner where the interpretations
drawn will be more meaningful.
Research Approach
Research Approach is of two types i.e. positivism and interpretivism. These research
approaches help the researcher in guiding the manner in which data is to be collected and research
is to be performed. While positivism approach assists in quantitative research where the facts and
figures are analysed to develop relevant conclusions and theories, interpretivism approach on the
other hand is related to qualitative research. Here a researcher tries to study the theories that have
already been formulated and test their viability or feasibility (Glesne, 2016). In the current research,
since the researcher is conducting a quantitative research, he has used the interpretivism approach.
This will assist him in incorporating the human element in the research carried out by him on the
employees of Tesco.
Data Collection
Data collection involves assimilation of the facts and figures as well as other data that could
be used for further interpreting and drawing relevant conclusions. There are two major techniques
i.e. primary research and secondary research that can be used for data collection. Primary research
involves collection of those facts and figures that have been assimilated on a first hand basis and
the secondary research involves collection of references taken form already researched and
published work when it assists in drawing relevant conclusions. In the current research, researcher
has used both primary and secondary technique i.e. he has used questionnaire method to collect the
data form the respondents and has also studied and reviewed the research that has already been
done.
Sampling
Out of the entire universe, the researcher selects a particular sample that will assist them in
drawing relevant conclusions describing the characteristics of the entire universe (Silverman,
2016). When the sample is selected on a random basis it is referred as probability sampling and
