INTRODUCTION
Leadership refers to an action of leading people, group and company. It is an ability of
management of firm to set as well as attain challenging objectives, decisive action, motivate the
other people to perform in better manner etc. Management can be a person or group of people
those are ready to accept responsibility for run business and manage its business operations. The
main role of management is to organise, control and direct all necessary activity of firm. They
motivate the other people to do work together for attaining the aims and goals of company.
Management consists activities related to setting strategy of firm along with coordinating efforts
of its staff members to achieving its objectives by applying available resources for an instance
human resource, financial, technological etc. An ineffective leadership and management leads to
quitting, tension and disillusionment in broad endeavours array for such as politics and business.
An ineffective lead lack motivate to deal with complex issues (Aboyassin and Abood, 2013).
Imperial Hotel is an organisation that operate its hotel in Japan. This report is based on a specific
issue i.e. Ineffective leadership and management by previous Heads of Department and
supervisory staff including poor monitoring and control procedures. It provides the better
accommodation and staying facilities to consumers or visitors. Under this mention report will be
studied about the different issues faced through Imperial hotel. There will be discussion about
the management theory. The management of Imperial Hotel always motivate its staff members to
work in a team and focus on achieving specific goals with in given period of time. The
appropriate solutions for the arisen problems will be discuss.
Analysis of the individual problem
Imperial is London based hotel and it is branded hotel chain in 4 star market. It operate
around 25 hotels in United Kingdom. It provides the better accommodation facilities and high
quality of services to its consumers as well as international guests in order to fulfil their needs.
Imperial hotel is having attractive conference rooms, more than 500 bedrooms, 4 restaurants, 3
bards, gaming area and swimming facilities (Antonakis and House, 2013). The main focus of this
hotel is to determine needs of consumers and also satisfying them so that they can be retain for
long period of time. This hotel provides the high quality of services so the expectation of its
customers are high from this. It has 6 head of Departments like Guest services, Food &
Beverages, Human Resource & training, Front of House & Reception, Guest Services &

Concierge. There are around 450 staff members are working and it has some outsider contractors
for an instance laundry services, leisure centre management and specialist cleaning.
As Peter Farnsworth, hire as new General Manager and taken over management of
Imperial hotel. After the survey of hotel, Peter Farnsworth notices some issues related to the
ineffective management and leadership through supervisory staff as well as Head of Departments
consisting poor control and monitoring procedures. The management was unable to manage all
activities and developing coordination among all staff members (Cheng, 2013). After conducting
a survey, it is analysed that guests are not satisfied from the services of hotel and face many
issues related to quality, accommodation etc.
In this, performance level of employees goes down due to lack support of management
and lack of leader guidance. Under this, previous manager had lack of monitoring skills and also
not focused towards monitor daily basis work in hotel reception, kitchen and housekeeping.
There are many adverse effect on business of hotel arisen such as profitability, growth, reduce
market position, loyalty of consumers etc. The manager was not including the staff members in
any decision process and also not taking the opinions of employees regarding any topic. Behind a
successful organisation, employees plays a necessary role. If employees will not be satisfied
from their job then they will unable to attain target.
Theories related to leadership and management for better control and effective management
Management theories refers to set of the general rules which guide managers to manage
activities and operations of company. These are helpful for managers to assist staff members to
attain the specific objectives of business. The theories related to management are vision of
various ways for run business that is based on different assumptions about systems and people
operate. In context to Imperial hotel case, it is observed that the facilities and conditions of hotel
is better and there is an ineffective control on activities (Fernández-Muñiz, Montes-Peón and
Vázquez-Ordás, 2014).
It develops negative impact on reputation of hotel and the main reasons of arise these problems
are Supervisory Staff and Head of Department. There are different theories used by Imperial

Human Relation theory- It is a management theory and in this, belief of people is to be
part of the supportive team that help in facilitate towards growth and productivity. If staff
members receive any special attention as well as encourage to participate then they are motivated

company. This theory emphasis significance of aligning requirements of workers with needs of
firm and adopt those policy which can provide the benefits to company as well as staff members.
It is helpful in developing knowledge as well as skills for improving productivity of employees
(Houghton and et. al., 2012). In context to Imperial hotel, it require to gain attention of
employees, enhance their motivation level, maximize their performance level etc. Under this,
relation of previous manager in Imperial hotel was not good and it creates misunderstanding
among manager and employees. If the relationship among management and employees will be
better then they will give their better performance and focus on achieving the targets with in
mention time period.
Contingency theory- On the basis of this theory, there is no any effective method to
organize corporate and take nay decisions. Under this, managers should take any kind of
decisions at workplace according to situation. Contingent leader applied its own leadership style
to right conductions. It will be helpful in make improvement in current problems. In addition to
this, it is necessary for management to use this theory to make improvement the participation of
employees in the various functions in an efficient manner. It is an effective way to enhancing
motivation of employees at workplace. In context to Imperial hotel, previous manager does not
include the staff members in decision making and take decisions itself.
Classical theory- It is management theory and based on beliefs that staff members have
only physical and economic requirements related to job satisfaction. The main focus of this
theory is on the company rather than staff members which are working in it. Under this, it is
necessary that structure of Imperial hotel should be proper and employees do not face any issues
related to performing their activities in an effective manner. In addition to this, managers can
monitor the activities and also give the proper guidance to staff members for performing tasks
and achieving activities. Through this positive impact can be developed on reputation of
company at market place. In addition to Imperial hotel, previous manager does not monitor the
activities as well as guide them. On the basis of this given theory, it is responsibility of head of
department to give positive and safe working environment to employees along with enhancing
their skills or knowledge (Krasikova, Green and LeBreton, 2013).

Proposal to solve such management problems
As per present case study, it has evaluated that previous General Manager of Imperial
Hotel had proved its ineffective performance. Due to poor leadership and managerial skills, this
hotel has faced various issues. It includes heavy labour turnover, poor sales performance,
disappointing results on achievement of guest satisfaction etc. Thus, all these causes impact on
reputation and brand image of organisation at marketplace in negative manner. It has also
evaluated that due to poor monitoring and control procedures, morale of various HODs are
decreasing in high manner. Employees who were working from many years on good positions at
workplace have also left over. This will lead to decrease morale of existing workers which are
retain from long period of time. Thus, to get retention of previous one and bring their morale up,
employers of this organisation has recruited a new manager- Peter Farnsworth. The main work of
this newly appointed manager is to identify causes, due to which seniors have failed to conduct
their responsibilities (Lindebaum, 2013). It includes maintain and monitored the standard of
work i.e. undertaken in housekeeping process, keep reception and kitchen area clean etc.
To manage entire problems, newly appoint manager needs to review the monitoring
procedures. This would lead to give instruction to managers of HOD in what manner they have
to instruct workers for maintaining the standard of work. In order to boost morale of existing
workers and staff members, Peter also need to organise some incentives plan. Under this process,
those workers who have given their best support in providing better services to consumers, they
are rewarded. Along with this, by providing working hours flexibility, rewards and
compensations etc. help in generating job satisfaction among employees. Furthermore, it is also
necessary for Peter to organise business meetings on regular manner with managers and seniors
of all Head of Departments. Under this meeting, they can allow to discuss on matters which
impact negatively both on performance of workers and business (Oshagbemi, 2017). This would
help in identifying solutions for resolving such issues by including participation of all managers.
Through this process, Peter can also gain advantage to bring collaboration among seniors and
staff members. With this assistance, he can also gain support of workers in improving
productivity and brand image of hotel as well.
Peter also needed to organise some training programs for staff members where they can
learn in what manner, demand of customers can be met. It helps in increasing knowledge and
abilities of workers to perform assign duties in best manner. This would give advantage to staff

members in making their career in hotel sector more bright. Apart from this, by developing own
leadership and management skills, Peter can influence staff members towards achievement of
aims and objectives. Thus, all these procedures, aid newly appointed manager to improve poor
condition of Imperial Hotel and enhance its brand image as well (Patel and Hamlin, 2012).
CONCLUSION
It has been concluded from the above mention report that Imperial hotel faces some
problems related to satisfaction of customers, poor management and many others. From these
kinds of issues, performance level of staff members are reduced and hotel is not able to attain its
set objectives with in a given period of time. Under this mention report studied about the many
different problems which are faced by the Imperial hotel related to the reduce profit level,
dissatisfied international customers, poor management, unsupportive leader. There has been
discussion about the management theories so that company can manage al kinds of activities and
operations in an effective as well as efficient manner. In an organisation, it is necessary that
leader and managers should be supportive and they guide their employees in a better manner so
that they can focus on achieving the objectives in an effective and better manner.
There has been studied about the many different issues related to the poor management,
monitoring, reduce performance level of employees, unsatisfied consumers etc. In order to
resolve all issues, Imperial hotel finds some solutions such as Incentivise supportive
management, review the monitoring process etc. Classical, human relation and contingency
theories of management are helpful in resolving all issues which arise at workplace in a better
and effective manner. It is helpful in enhancing productivity of Imperial hotel and providing the
competitive benefits to hotel at market place. On the other hand, there has been discussion about
some other solutions of arisen issues. It will be helpful for Imperial hotel to make improvement
in its existing services, make better relationship with consumers and maintain its better position
at market place.
