Social skills help in the promotion of positive interaction with individuals as well as the
environment. These skills include empathy, generosity, helpfulness, participation in activities,
communication and problem solving. Development of social skills in children lays the
foundation stone for academic achievements in the future. Some of the methods required to
inculcate social skills among children include classroom settings to improve social
developments, play opportunities for promotion of social functioning and direct teaching of
various social skills.
Children learn a variety of social skills during play activities in school. With the help of
building blocks and role-playing in small dramas, children develop communication skills,
reading, writing skills, counting and identifying patterns. Reading skills can impart children with
the ability to be independent learners. Socialization plays an important role in enhancing reading
skills and habits among children (Sonnenschein, Metzger and Thompson 2016). Reading plays
and storybooks to children in school can inculcates the interest of reading books among them.
Children learn from their peers. They inculcate reading habits when they see children of
their age engrossed in reading. “Children summer reading programs” are aimed at children of 4-
12 years of age and such programs aim to improve reading habits among them. It is highly
essential to inculcate the habit of reading among children from a younger age, so that they can
imbibe the learning or morals from the books, thereby enabling their overall development (Pagan
and Sénéchal 2014). Various socialization approaches can inculcate reading habits among
children. Teachers in schools can organize storybook reading sessions, book clubs, literature
circles and reading groups to enhance reading skills among children. However, apart from
reading, socialization also helps to inculcate the love of outdoor activities among children like
football, swimming, which helps to build a strong foundation for health.
