Abstract
Reading and writing are the basic skills of a student. These skills are needed in academic life
primarily. In far, these skills are also needed when students are going to seek a job. So, students
should make themselves skilled when at school or college. It is a basic thing. Students have to
improve their reading and writing skills by following so many strategies.

Introduction
In this era, having skills is necessary to meet everyday challenges faced in life. The changes that
took place globally force everyone to gather more information and force them to be more skilled.
Students are not out of it. To sustain, they must need to be skilled. This is the era of competition.
People are getting used to the competition. Similarly, students are trying to be skilled in school
or universities in their writing and reading, and so on. This topic is about student’s writing and
reading skills (Wardani, 2020). This topic includes how students can increase their reading and
assignment writing skills. This report includes some strategies to develop reading skills and some
strategies to develop assignment writing skills which will increase the adaptability of a student.
So, these topics are important for a student for their progress.

Strategies to improve reading ability
When students are in school, college, or university, they have to do a lot of assignments.
Sometimes they have to make a report based on a case. To do this they have to read the whole
case properly which is not possible without reading skill (Roskos and Neuman, 2014). There are
so many strategies that help a student to develop his or her reading skills. This report includes
those strategies. They are given below:
Predicting content
Predicting content is the strategy by which readers can predict what is the topic after seeing any
picture or diagrams or heading of the case. Good students make a prediction when they read. To
make himself familiar with the topic student first need to see pictures and diagrams allocated in
the topic (Miftah, 2015). They have to imagine what is included in the topic after seeing the
picture and headings of the topic. They have to check what they know about the topic. Students
also predict using text clues and their own experiences. Predicting helps a student to think
actively about the topic. It also helps the students to make sure about the topic and create a
connection between what they read and what they think about the topic.
Signposting language
Signposting language is the phrases and words which help a reader or listener to go through a
story. It helps the reader to know the consequence of a story. For example, At the starting of this
report, it has been said that “This topic is about student’s writing and reading skills”. Here this
sentence helps the reader understand what the topic is about. Similarly, the words and phrases
like firstly, secondly, then, for example, additionally, and so on. Signposting language like a map
which shows routes how to go through the topic and it relates a sentence with another sentence.
It will also help a reader to route how to write according to the story. So, when students are about
to write based on what they read. So, it’s necessary to understand the story. A story includes lots
of signposting languages (Kartawijaya, 2018). So, it’s a strategy to understand the signposting
language clearly.
Set a time for reading
To be a good reader or to develop reading ability students need to set a fixed time to read every
day. It is like setting a goal and make some missions for that. It is the most effective way.

Practice makes a man perfect. Similarly, through daily practice students can improve their
reading ability. They can set 30 minutes to 1 hour for reading. This will help a student to read
and understand the topic easily. Additionally, they can read several kinds of magazines, books,
articles, fiction, and so on.
Set reading goal
Students can set reading goals to develop their reading ability. As an example, they can set the
vocabulary goal. When a student goes through a topic, he or she has to be aware of so many
vocabularies. Without proper knowledge about the vocabulary, they can not understand the topic.
So, vocabulary is a must thing (Jamaliah, 2020). A student can fix 30 minutes to 1 hour for a day
to study vocabulary which helps him to be a good reader.
Take notes while reading
This is the second most important thing. It is a highly effective method to improve reading skills.
When reading a topic, a reader can note down the important issues, main points, and any
vocabulary. It can be said that it is a summary of the topic. It helps a student to make a small
content from a big content (Jabbar. S, 2014). It gives a better understanding also. Thus, a reader
can improve his reading ability.
There is more strategy to improve reading ability such as skimming, scanning, and make himself
ready for the environment and so on.
Improving the quality of the writing assignment
For most of the students, Assignments are a burden. An assignment is a kind of daily task given
by the teacher or faculty. They even don’t know how to go through writing. And also, they can’t
reach the desired goal. Sometimes faculty cannot make the students understood how to write
assignments. So, students have to improve their writing ability on their own. There are some
strategies students can follow to improve their writing skills. They are given below:
Writing every day
One of the best strategies is writing every day. Similar to reading every day, students have to set
or fix a permanent time to write every day. It will be more than the reading time. Students can
allocate at least 1 hour to 2 hours for writing. They can read a topic every day like any journal or

any article (Habyby, Martono and Sarosa, 2016). Then they will write what they think about the
topic. Additionally, there are so many online writing sites and so many blogging sites. Students
can make blogs about an issue or a topic and can post there which will help them drastically to
improve their writing ability and thus they can improve assignment writing ability.
Choose simple words
Choosing simple and easy words will make writing so convenient. It makes the reader felt
comfortable. If they start with fancy words, they will feel like writing assignment is so hard. So,
in the beginning, they have to start with some easy words. It will make them confident because
they can then easily write an assignment. As they are already giving time to improve their
vocabulary skill, so they can write with some fancy words when they will be used to those
words.
Read widely
Another important strategy is to read briefly to make the writing proper. When students are about
to write an assignment, they have to go through the topic at first. They have to read the topic
first. And then they have to search for it online to gather more information about the topic so that
he or she has better insight and knowledge about the topic. It will help the student to write a lot
of things (Gupta, 2015). Additionally, they can read widely about so many topics which will
make them more knowledgeable. Writing is so easy when a writer knows a lot of things. Thus,
through reading widely students can improve their writing skills.
Submitting writing to magazine or website
Feedback helps a person to aware of his flaws and it also inspires a person when he gets
feedback on what he has done. Students can submit their writings to any magazines, Websites, or
Blogging site. They can also submit their writings to a contest. After the submission, they will
get feedback about what they have written. If the feedback is positive, then the student can find
his flaws in the writing. According to the flaws, they can improve their writing for further
submission. If the feedback is positive, then they will be inspired to do both. So, both kinds of
feedback are helpful for the students.

Finding a writing partner
Finding a writing partner is another way to develop writing ability. It will make a student more
disciplined. Sometimes doing a task alone seems boring. But then the same thing you will do
with a partner, you will be encouraged to do the thing. It also creates a competition between you
and your writing partner (Abdinazarov, 2019). Moreover, when you will be stuck someplace you
can seek help from your friend. As it is mentioned earlier that, Feedback is crucial. So, you can
get feedback from your partner also.
Conclusion
Writing upgrades insightful and psychological capacities expand exploratory and examination
aptitudes increase practical skills. So, writing assignment is so important. Along with academic
purpose, it helps a student make them fit for their career. Without reading skills improving
writing skills can be thought. So both are important for a student for his career and academic
purpose.
