REFLECTION SUMMARY 1
The participation in the debate on indigenization with my peers was a humble experience
which helped in learning a multitude of lessons. My fundamental role in the debate of ‘Being
indigenous is a barrier to health care access in Canada’ was to portray and elaborate on the
benefits of the medical system funded by the taxpayer. This opportunity was particularly
useful to build self-confidence and develop self-reliance as each peer was required to use
more than two topics to support their arguments and provided the scope for more
assignments. A reflection on the debate was valuable as I released my strength and areas of
improvement (Cno.org, 2020). I realized my strength of not getting sidetracked from my
argument of discussion and was able to stay firm to my points of discussion. However, this
debate also made me recognize a significant area of improvement in covering all the
arguments within the given time limit. I received valuable feedback from my peers that my
tone and volume of speech needed improvement to enhance my debating skills further. The
feedback was in line with my perceptions as it made me realize that the tone and volume of
my speech were significantly high and can lead to an unfavourable environment in the debate
room. This overall experience of reflection helped me recognize my skills and specific areas
that need improvement (Cno.org, 2020). Firstly, this experience was useful to build my skills
in communication, which include both written and oral. Secondly, it was essential to
overcome my fear of public speaking and helped me clear my speech to address a group of
audience. Alongside, it served as an excellent tool to furnish my critical thinking skills and
enhancing my abilities of researching, organizing and effectively presenting the debate in the
course of advocating in favour of the equity in the access of health care and resources for the
marginalized and Indigenous communities.
