INDIGENOUS EDUCATION AND PERSPECTIVES
As a teacher, my primary role is to know the ability, level and the requirements of the
students. The teachers are the ones who find out the needs of individual students from their
background and overall knowledge about the studies. I do that with my students by asking
them basic questions in the very first class. I also tend to interview them separately to get
individual feedback about their learning. A teacher of early age does not only teaches
numeracy or literacy but also provide basic ideas and concepts about life such as respecting
each other, behaving appropriately with people from the surroundings, behaving equally with
others within a diverse situation etc. Therefore, it is my responsibility to ensure the students
also learn the basics. I tend to make sure that the students understand about the inclusive
environment in education and not exclude the ones who do not belong to the dominant social
groups. Inclusion refers to the environment where all the members have an equal opportunity
for participating. Therefore, there should not be any kind of boundaries on the basis of
gender, ethnicity and disability. I make sure that all my students feel adored and valued
within the classroom environment and they are capable of mixing and participating with the
other members of the group. Therefore I always try to offer them a positive and safe
environment. I try to make each of my students feel important in the class, therefore I speak
to them directly, call them using their individual names and utilizing eye contacts. I always
ask them direct questions. Initially, I had carried out a direct assessment for testing their
previous knowledge, preferred learning style so that it is easier for me to support them
wherever it is required. Therefore I had adjusted my style of teaching according to their level
of learning. The concept of equality within the classroom environment ensures that
individuals or the group of individuals are always treated equally and fairly. They should not
be treated less favorably; rather I always try to treat them being specific to their requirements.
In addition to that the diversity focuses on recognizing, respecting and valuing the differences
for contributing and realizing their full potential. Therefore I also promote their individual

culture of all the students. I always promote diversity amongst my student by telling the
students various stories about different ethnicities and their specializations. The more they
learn about such histories, they tend to learn respecting them. If there is any student who
comes from a socially less dominant culture, I tend to promote their culture among students. I
utilize my knowledge about their past experiences and teach them in accordance to that. The
more they encounter such experiences with people from different backgrounds; they tend to
learn respecting them. As a teacher, I also try to include all the students in the activities so
that none of them feel less confident and try to avoid the classroom activities. In this way I
make sure they are flexible enough to adopt difficult situations in life.
