Reflection on Sustainability in relation to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and
Triple Bottom Line (TBL) business Goals
Sustainability definitely is not a new concept but it is related to the urban development globally.
After starting the course, I developed my horizon that is considered to make broader to a global
level. Besides, I can also see that sustainability is related to many aspects, not only the urban
development but also the business, which can make serious affect on the descendents of life. I
have come to learn about sustainability concept, along with the communities that include social,
environmental and economical systems that remain in constant interaction for the benefit of
population. I also considered that sustainable development helps to satisfy the community,
without sacrificing ability for future generation to meet own needs. In this Journal, I have come
to a stage, where I would be analysing the “Environmental Sustainability in education at the 3
Elementary Schools”. Over the last few decades, some efforts are being made at local, national
and global level to pay attention to sustainability (Eeinwisconsin.org, 2017). I believe that the
Goal 7 of the UN Millennium Development Goal is to ensure “Environmental Sustainability”, so
that development of CSR and TBL business goals can be carried out. I came to a stage during my
course that a multitude of the professional groups has offered support to teacher that may
incorporate sustainable education in curriculum in secondary and primary classrooms. For
instance, the National Science Teachers Association provided a position statement that defined
to be a part of School curriculum, as the student knowledge establishes foundation for future
actions and understandings (Environmentalscience.org, 2017).
I have also come across the social studies context where it allowed young learners to explain the
relations with other people, and equip knowledge from the past. Gradually, this developed the
key skills working in effective decision process and problem solving to make valued judgements.
It is found that ESE (Environmental Sustainability Education) is focussed heavily on the work of
the educators, mainly in K-12 spectrum (K12.wa.us, 2017). While I have witnessed that, the
institution responded on the emphasis on ESE that included development of a 5-Course Minor
ESE for undergraduate teachers and creating of partnerships. Even, I have experienced that
exploring perspective of the teachers on ESE could be elementary, as it forms diverse

from University education faculty that has valued on the importance of the ESE preparation in
social studies and science but the K-12 teachers here has expressed constraints on capability for
engaging preparation that includes the competent practicing of teacher’s role model and other
materials. For an instance, teachers in the program has cited significance of content knowledge
that works on practising outdoor education experience and pedagogical strategies to shape own
development.
A theoretical approach applied here shows my area of certainty to better understand ways ESE
has been put to action across the school setting through a Narrative Enquiry Framework was
being made (Www2.fgcu.edu, 2017). My area of understanding was that narratives names were
made of structured quality of experience to analyse patterns of inquiry. It meant a process of
collaboration is required that includes re-storying and mutual storytelling aspects, as the research
proceeds. In simple, I can relate that it is a revelation of particularities where case-centred
inquiries could help reader to analyse the phenomena. Now, the CSR practise that may be related
to sustainability in education at the 3 Elementary Schools is quite precise. I acknowledge that
CSR is a part of commitment that contributes to society’s development in order to ensure
sustainable business practice. The 3 Elementary Schools in my area of understanding with CSR
metric could be included in better work practices with the community and stakeholders involved
(Taylor & Francis, 2016). Thus, it is beneficial, not just to the society but the organisation to
attract more investors and customers. Regardless, the effect made by 3 Elementary Schools on
CSR, can go a long way towards sustainable improvement. I feel that implementation of CSR
guides 3 Elementary Schools in an ethical way, so that it can contribute to welfare and health of
the society. It tailors benefits of higher learning, so that key partnerships can be developed with
other businesses.
For 3 Elementary Schools, it is found that students require an extra guidance, as they want to
receive a solid education, and that can make them active changers in a society. I have analysed
the instance on what teacher beliefs could be, and how the beliefs can influence the practices in
the classroom. In that case, a narrative qualitative approach could be effective for describing the
beliefs across each of the 3 schools. From the background of the three schools, I have observed
that schools are driven purposefully, as they always had reputation for all these high achieving

list a four GD held with group teachers from each of the school during 2018 Semester, mainly on
the mutual planning. I persisted that each of the discussion lasted around 35-40 minutes, and it
was transcribed for future purpose. Here, I witnessed that identifying information is an important
area, since teachers need to describe their teaching patterns and the views defined from
classroom practices. Rather, some prompts being elicit had a generic direction to flow than using
scripted interview process. I found that all discrepancies that were being discussed until an
agreement was met showed some instances of ESE between the 3 schools.
The way ESE plays in the three Schools is also showed in terms of findings by using the chosen
method. I witnessed the 3 Schools sustainability, where in Charter School, I came across a stage
where four teachers participated and volunteered in a discussion. I felt that one was taught first
grade, one on third grade, and other two were mathematics and writing specialists. I did evidence
myself about the attribute I presented where a conversation was dominated by a discussion in
terms of consent, mainly curricula of the school that drove instructional decisions in classroom.
In few cases, teacher described some places where they incorporated supplementary instruction
based on the interest of teacher and student. For instance, I observed that one-third grade teacher
noted that each week would be a set of story, which cannot be changed, as it is a curriculum to be
followed. I noticed an instance where teacher of Charter school discussed some beliefs that may
work on sustainability and way it could translate the ESE Classroom practice. Further, none of
those teachers according to me mentioned to find a professional development preparation related
to ESE (Hursh et al. 2015). I could just give an example where, if I was there, I could re-use the
scratch paper or emphasize the effectiveness of modification of the lights. With the reflective
practice, I have defined myself to be the arbiter since effective education opportunities could
increase student’s mental ability towards studies and practice lessons.
It is found that some teachers discussed about the informal opportunities in education that expose
students to the ESE. I have also evidenced that one teacher made request with hesitance but this
proved meaningful for her students in the class. Besides, another teacher also discussed a field

for exploring natural world. From the experience of Public School, I found that the principal and
four teachers participated in a GD. It showed the inclusion of teacher, technical specialist, special
education teacher, 4th grade teacher and a literacy specialist were working on a STEM magnet
program (Marshall et al. 2012). I analysed that the School was set on a curricula, which included
opportunities to work outside of it. Some teachers in my opinion discussed importance of literacy
instruction but some also shared strategies to incorporate interdisciplinary teaching and learning
interests. Eventfully, some also talked on “borrowing minutes here and there”, or use literacy for
allowing students to write and read topics on deliberate interests (Kronlid and Öhman, 2013). I
believe that special education teacher will try to communicate on the project, for which students
need to choose ESE topics. They were given the topics based on natural disasters. In that state,
the project I made showed a principle that was shared for teachers to use a genius hour on the

in classroom practice. As we, people do talk about renewable energy, but some children are not
aware of it. In quest, I acquire that they also do not have any kind of idea on how to utilise the
sun when building a home. This is a place that I know, and needs to talk about solar energy. On
incorporating ESE into writing, I think that the world of literacy that I find in a book or regarding
any topic can find me to work passionately on. There is what sustainability matters the most, as it
will show connection to the nature through the school, or it is quite close to a large state park,
including an outdoor space or a garden space. As described, many students live on a property, as
the group agreed on closeness with nature to facilitate student’s learning and interest in ESE.

Another instance in Friends School where I found four teachers did participate in a discussion.
The process of emphasis is developed on the school’s focus that could be multi-disciplinary

comprising of Art, Science, Reading and Spanish, I have been described as progressive, as the

shared with language arts, which have a subject to be made with good attention. Eventfully, I did
describe instances of interdisciplinary instructions, developed with the content areas mainly. In
case, I found that if I teach Spanish through science, or through math, I can spark on a curiosity

the business. I have used an education philosophy from the TBL, where growing and learning
towards development, as an educator will try to foster a good environment for allowing students

remain successful and proactive by doing new and innovative projects. I persist that
sustainability in educational system would also be proactive, as effective process of Classroom
Teaching can become innovative with the technological world. As sustainability is a key factor
towards development, I should provide a good attention towards Environment, Society and
Economy. It makes a balance for the peer educator programs so that sustainability aspects could
be defined with higher education. Thus, I have evidenced that in Charter school, the teacher have
discusses few aspects, which could incorporate ESE by school’s heavy curricula on language and
literacy arts. With intense focus made on language arts, I have eventually paid huge attention, so
that enough possibilities could be developed through the “Choice-based and genius-hour
instructions”. It just takes good advantage at Public School, or takes advantage from the curricula
defined at Friends School (Hursh et al. 2015). Especially, I believe one needs to have strong
skills to remain successful, mainly with the younger grades.

School, I have found the teachers have discussed way on which limited liability is provided to
incorporate ESE by school heavy curricular consent on language and literacy arts. Besides, I also
found that one of the teachers explained in choosing between practising phonics and teaching of
sciences by utilising the School mandated program. Thus, the key focus developed on language
arts is being echoed in contrast to other schools. Some discussions provided less attention but
limitations were having systematic influence, having possibilities to work with constraints with
the choice-based and genius-hour instructional activities (Junyent and de Ciurana, 2008). From
my experience, I did came across the concept of interdependence from the discussion of public

teachers, I need to get an understanding that in a classroom, students pick on what they know, or
else from home.

seem less but the non-curricula practices work in shared discussions for all the three schools. I

and people at Friends school have planted seeds for children for considering, as they grow elder

nature. Thus, it may serve as a procedure for action with continued learning too.
