Industrial psychology is defined as the scientific study of the workplace, employees,
organizational behaviour and organizations. It is also termed as work psychology or
organizational psychology that aims to increase the productivity of the workplace by solving
the issues of the employee such as mental and physical health of the employees. Industrial
psychology is considered important because it helps in managing and understanding the
organization and employee relationship and the person who is recruited under the role of
industrial psychology is known as industrial psychologist (O'Neil & Koekemoer, 2016).
Industrial psychologist focuses on enhancing the organization productivity by providing
effective counselling to the employees and hire suitable employees. Industrial psychology
follows there principle strands for defining the aim of the psychologist namely leader
focused, follower-focused and contingency-focused.
In South Africa, the society for industrial and organizational psychology (SIOP) is
developed that comprises of different member who are involved in various activities focusing
to connect the profession to the enormous societal issues. There are different members or
experts known as industrial psychologist who are responsible for applying the concept of
industrial psychology within the organization. Hence, society for industrial and
organizational psychology (SIOP) will aim to enhance the performance and well-being of the
employee within the organization and promote practice, teaching and science of industrial
psychology that will help the psychologist to successfully apply the concept of industrial
psychology (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, 2019). The industrial
psychologist will receive skilled and socialized training that will help them to attain complete
knowledge and understanding of the issues and identify the critical issues responsible for the
success of the business.
