1ESSAY ON SOCIETY AND CULTURE
This paper intends to prepare a theoretical approach towards the interdependence of
society and culture as well as influence of various components on these two fields. In this
context, this paper has considered three peer reviewed journals to understand the aspect more
precisely. An organized group of people who live together like a community with same moral
and social values can be termed as society. Culture is different from society as it captures the
theory of both the collective and individual values. Every society has their own culture yet it
is not necessary to perceive the same culture. It can differ from one person to another. Culture
can be measured by individual expression of social behavior, traditional customs and
behavioral aspects. Culture is basically a form of influence which unifies the society. On the
contrary, society is traditional format, which makes people to stay together through pressure.
Several components have a shared impact on society and culture that has been discussed with
the help of three journals.
Therefore, this essay is going to be in a form of annotated bibliography explaining
and inventing several dimension of society and culture. According to the journals:
Schwartz, Shalom H. "Rethinking the concept and measurement of societal culture in light of
empirical findings." Journal of cross-cultural Psychology 45.1 (2014): 5-13. DOI:
10.1177/0022022113490830
In this journal, the author has discussed that the cultural differences have been
identified more within a country than between countries. The prior conception of culture has
been changing gradually and in most of the cases, it has been observed that values play a
crucial role. Culture does not deal with shared values of individuals rather it is considered as
hypothetical. Therefore, this journal has argued that if cultural is an external attribute of an
individual rather than being an internal aspect then it will be difficult to measure. Therefore, a
relationship has been found between latent culture and individual values of people. Besides,
societal institutions has been playing an important role in shaping people’s values, behavior,

the way of thinking and mentality since ancient days. The reasons are varied as far as internal
cultural differences are concerned.

dynamics of celebrity culture." International journal of cultural studies 16.6 (2013): 641-657.
DOI: 10.1177/1367877912459140
In recent times, it has been observed that the impact of celebrities has become
prominent and the authors has started to term it as ‘celebrification’ or ‘celebritization’. The
complex culture has been described by defining these terms. Whereas, celebrification deals
with ordinary people’s transformation into celebrities, celebritization captures the theory of
dynamic cultural values of society influenced by celebrity activities. This drift of society is
common and it is increasing due to the extensive use of social media and technology. The
personality, way of thinking, individual culture everything is being influenced by
celebritization.
Hepp, Andreas, Stig Hjarvard, and Knut Lundby. "Mediatization: theorizing the interplay
between media, culture and society." Media, culture & society 37.2 (2015): 314-324. DOI:
10.1177/0163443715573835
This journal has argued how the mediatization has been influencing the society to adopt new
culture or modify the perception of culture. Media is a mode of communication and holds
greater social impact than any other mode of interaction. The funny fact is that both the
influence and the perception is dynamic and changes periodically. Precisely, this journal has
argued the contribution of media in shaping society’s concept of cultural values.
It has been understood that society deals with economic aspects and the social
structures of a community whereas culture states the preferences of fashion, music and
lifestyle choices of a certain group of people.
