FIRST ELEMENT OF CARING
Competence is the skills and knowledge acquired the nursing professional in order to providing
appropriate care and support to patients (Bradshaw, 2016). The use of effective interpersonal skills
and communication greatly enhance the ability of a competent nurse.
SECOND ELEMENT OF CARING
Confidence is a key characteristic of a registered nurse in offering caring to a patient. This help in
ensuring that appropriate treatment is offered to patient and motivates to recovery at a timely basis
(Lee et al., 2020).
IMPORTANCE OF CARING IN NMBA
Caring using competence and confidence need to be given in
accordance to the NMBA to promote health and wellbeing
(Dowling et al., 2019).

Rationale
From the above infographic, it can understand that about of the six C’s of caring,
Competence and Confidence were chosen for discussion. The importance of caring in the
nursing profession is stated to be a vital role of the registered nurse and thus, elements of
caring have been evaluated.
In the first element, competence is introduced that can be simply stated to be an
ability to conduct operations in an effective manner that help in improvement of the practice
quality. Nursing competence involves the abilities to fulfil the role and responsibilities of a
nurse. The profession of nurse is challenged as they are the first line of professionals in the
healthcare sector and have the ability to contribute to society. Bradshaw (2016) opined that
they are expected to conduct professional responsibilities of offering continuous care,
protecting patients and supporting them in the activities of daily living. In order to
accomplish them, the competency needs to be improved and utilised in daily practice.
According to McSherry et al. (2017), there two components in competence, one is the
potential ability to conduct the duty of care at any circumstance and second is motivation
level that demonstrates the usefulness of conducting the abilities. Nehrir et al. (2016) opined
that it is a behavioural trait that is based on the experience and interest of nurses based on
attitudes, belief and motivation. The competency of nursing professionals includes the ability
to understand the need of people and circumstance, application of knowledge, the
establishment of interpersonal relationship, clinical judgement and offer person-centred care.
Fukada (2018) opined that competencies are critical in improving the quality of nursing.
In the second element, confidence as one of the critical caring component has been
introduced. Confidence is an important attributing that can be demonstrated to the family of
the patient in order to ensure that the care of the patient is appropriate and the information

offered to them is current and true. As per the opinion of Lee et al. (2020), confidence is a
quality of nursing staffs that help in fostering a trustful relationship and thus, guaranteeing
the family to be aware and comfortable in the care process. Moreover, it allows the family to
trust the nurse and think that the patient is at good hands and is being assisted to recovery
rather than suffer. According to the study of Scerri and Scerri (2019), caring is defined as the
confidence of protecting and safeguarding the welfare of another person and helping the
patient to grow and recover from the ailment. If a nurse is competent enough to handle an
emergency, however, lack confidence may lead to serious concern and in most of the cases, it
can be seen that a less competent professional can be trained if they are confident enough,
however; a more competent professional with less confidence level is not preferred (Hurteau,
2019). Therefore, it can be stated that the attribute of confidence that one of the abilities that
can be used by the nursing professionals to help in effectively communicating with all the
stakeholders in the health care settings.
As per the current expectations of nursing practice within the Nursing Midwifery
Board of Australia (NMBA) Code of Conduct for nurses, nursing staff need to be confident
and competent in order to offer care. This is because it allows in improving the quality of
care, effectively developing a therapeutic relationship with patient and family as well as
involving them in the caring process. In many studies, it has been found that the engagement
of family in the care plan has been able to initiate the recovery process and offer a number of
advantages. The core nursing competency can be defined as the ability if performing nursing
care based on ethical thinking ability and demonstration of nursing skills for taking care and
offering appropriate support to patients which is an integral part of the nursing principles. As
per the principles, the nurse need to practice with confidence that allow in establishment of
therapeutic relation with patients. Therefore, it can be stated the standards and codes are

however, the basic feature of caring remained the same over the years and will never be
changed. The NMBA Code of Conduct for nurses states that the care process needs to follow
various aspects that include autonomy, respect and dignity that can be found to be delivered
by competent and confident nurses.
It can be concluded that the discussion was limited to only two components of caring
that is competent and confidence that has been rationalised with evidence; however, there are
other components that need to be taken into account by nursing professional in their practice.
