AI Summary
This Information System assignment delves into the competitive landscape of the web, exploring the reasons behind the intense competition in the modern digital arena. It analyzes the strategic benefits organizations can derive from effective Information Systems (IS) and outlines the steps necessary to sustain these advantages. Furthermore, the assignment critiques the common misconception that an IS solely comprises hardware and software, providing a detailed examination of the additional crucial components, such as human resources, purpose, procedures, data, and telecommunication networks, that contribute to a comprehensive and functional IS. The assignment highlights the importance of these elements in enhancing the performance and effectiveness of an IS within an organizational context, supported by relevant references.

Question 1
Why is the web arena of so much competition today?
In modern times, the web is said to be both compelling as well as powerful piece of
the technology. This is a type of information system that allows persons to communicate
among each other in a very easy way and less time. The sole aspect of communication has
increased the familiarity of the web in midst of the users of internet now a days. The web has
played an important role in the technological advancement of the internet. As through web an
access to the whole databases present in the internet can be availed, it has emerged as one of
the main important technology among the users. For this reason, the web arena has evolved
as a fruitful competition in the technological market (Rothman, Gupta and McEvoy, 2017).
The usage of the web has increased so much that the internet is now the most trending
database access module in the modern times. The huge internet platforms like Facebook and
Google helps the users to maintain the communication among their users. The web arena is
also a vast database of knowledge, news as well as detailed intrusion of many users that has
enhanced the users for the increase level of usage of the web arena. The flow of data in many
countries flows in only one single direction. Therefore, the complexity for the use of the web-
based applications is very less through the web. Hence, web arena is the most preferred
platforms among the users in these modern times.
The web arena is now the widely used platform for the initiation of any
communication in a wide area. The focus of the web on the communication methodology has
helped it to emerge as an important platform in midst of the users that are using it. The
emergence of the new technologies in the web arena or platform has also increased the
curiosity for the users to use it (Cassidy, 2016). Hence, every company is trying to implement

new technologies in the field of web and so the web arena is going through competition in
modern times.
Question 2
What should an organization do to sustain the strategic benefits of IS?
The strategic benefits of an information system can be defined as the information
systems that is created by an organization for the enhancement of the competitive advantages
of the company among the other competitors present in the market. The information systems
plays an important role in helping the organization in various ways (Frow et al., 2015). These
can be summarized as the competitive advantage that a company can gain through the
implementation of the effective information systems. The main purpose of the
implementation of the information systems in an organization is to cope with the ongoing
competition in the market in accordance to the other competitors in the market. The
information systems are also strategically implemented in an organization to reach the
organizational objectives and goals (Noe et al., 2017). It can be seen in many organization
that the information systems that are implemented also have the ability to change the
perception of the organization regarding the processes, goals as well as the products and the
environmental relationships which can provide an added advantage to the organization’s
competitive goals. Moreover the information systems in an organization helps the
organization to develop the strategic advantages as well as helps the organization to analyse
the critical disadvantages and the potential solution is also provided to the users.
The strategic benefits of the Information Systems in an organizations puts an impact
in the global marketplace regarding the competition of the other industries present in the
market. The information systems provides an active support to the management of the
organization not only with the help of MIS management but also helps the management to

discover the strategic opportunities and implementation of the information systems (Mithas
and Rust, 2016). This information systems can also help the organization to plan with
integrity about the strategies that will be implemented for achieving the goals of the
organization. The implementation of the control mechanisms for the products is also
necessary and this is enhanced by the usage of an effective information systems (Kavanagh
and Johnson, 2017). Moreover the information systems helps the organization to keep a track
of all the databases regarding the users as well as of the management present or associated
with the organization. The main features as well as the benefits for the strategic information
system is described below:
1) Strategic Analysis: This phase of the information system supports the process of decision
making, the enhancement of the organizational efficiency as well as the increase in the
productivity of the employees, the enhancement in the product quality.
2) Competitiveness: This implementation of the strategic information system is also used for
the development of new services or products for achieving the competitive advantages in the
fields of the global marketplace.
3) Alignment focus: The integrated IS strategic planning is also enhanced by the usage of the
integrated information strategies (Orna, 2017). This also helps the operations of an
organization to consolidate with the distributed systems as well as to put an improvement in
the knowledge regarding the organization.

Question 3
‘An information system consists of hardware and software.’ Why is this statement
inadequate?
The above statement is inadequate as the information systems consists of many things
rather than only hardware and software (Chang, 2016). This is because the equipment that are
associated with the information system are divided into two prime categories that is
Hardware and Software. However in addition to these there are many more components in
the information system: This can be briefly described below:
Human Resource: These are the persons who are associated with the maintenance or running
of the overall information system. This consists of the technicians, the system analysts as well
as the network manager who are constantly associated with the smooth running of the
information systems in the organization (Kavanagh and Johnson, 2017).
Purpose: The purpose is the main requirement of the whole information system. As it is very
necessary to know the purpose for what the information system is implemented in the
organization.
Procedures/Policies: The information system has also to maintain some policies or rules
regarding the implementation of the information system in an organization (Smith and Wong,
2016). So these are also a part of the information systems.
Data/Information: The data is an important part which consists of the information system.
The IS is an important platform where the database of the overall users as well as
management are kept. So data or information is said to an important aspect in the information
systems. The information systems helps the organization to keep a track of all the databases
regarding the users as well as of the management associated with the organization.

Telecommunication Network: This component of the information system enhances the
communication between the different nodes of the network present in the organization. The
Information system incorporates the initiative of the business as well as it provides a
competitive advantage regarding the organization in the marketplace. The main purpose of
the implementation is to gain a level of telecommunication network among the users of the
industry.
Therefore it can be said that apart from the hardware and software components in an
information system there are many other components present that enhances the performance
of the information system as it is implemented in an organization.
