information system in their business activity. Information system is important for the companies
as it helps in making business process easier as well as faster. One of the biggest problem in the
modern days of business is that they have to manage a lot of data. This is one the biggest
problem when concerned with multinational companies. Use of ICT helps in managing
informations of venture as well as setting up proper communication channel in the company.
Hence this result in smoothness of the work process (Management Information Systems (MIS):
Manager Decision-Making Tools, 2017). Volkswagen is the company that deals in the business
of making cars and SUVs. This report highlights the ways in which companies deal with the
management of informations. It also showcases the roles and responsibilities of Information
system manager inside a firm.
Background
Volkswagen is one the biggest auto makers of the world. It is Germany based company
established in the year 1937. Since the industry of Auto mobiles have seen many changes in the
terms of technology that is being used within an organisations. It has become important for the
company to manage its data bases so as to use the informations related to activities of the firm
for their future plans. This also helps company to reach to larger part of the society as the reach
of the technology has made to every hands (Scherer and Schapke, 2011). Today cars have
become computer on wheel all the problem related to the cars can be diagnosed. There are
several information system managers within the company that helps in the management of all
these kind of informations and data bases. There are several applications of information system
which is as follows:
It helps in the decision making process as the data collected through it can be evaluated
and hence can be used for making future business plans.
It can be used for making better customer service operations as the company can store all
the informations related to client and the discussions that had with the company
professionals.
In the present times this company is using its strategy like retrenchments from many market as
well as expansion in new markets using merger and acquisition. One of the major advantages of
using information system in an organisation is that it can be utilised to gather all data related the

customer demands and can use it for the designing of new products which can help in its
diversification strategy. This helps to make products as per the need of the customers.
Deployment of IS and data bases including definitions
When the information system meets the requirements of the organisation then it is
deployed at various business activity places within the organisation. In Volkswagen it is
deployed at the production area, marketing and sales department as well as customer service
department. This assist in firm's transition to a whole new system for operating its activities.
There are several developmental platforms that are installed in the form of hardware and
software. These development platforms are used to support broad range of deployment options.
This also ensures that there is no requirement of installing software at each deployed system as
the software can be accessed through centrally placed servers.
Database are managed through two important methods:
Creation of data ware houses can help in managing the data. This is large storage houses
for the company where each activity within an organisation can be stored and hence can
be accessed by the company professionals at the time of their requirement (Romney, and
Steinbart, 2012).
Another way of doing such kind of management is through the use of cloud computing
software. It is a very large place where lot of data can be stored. It can be accessed from
any place using the modern gadgets. It is effective for the companies like Volkswagen
whose data is generated at different parts of the world through its activities can be stored
in the centralised MIS and can be accessed for any part of the world. For example the
data that is collected by the sales department at the firm in London can be accessed by the
finance manager at Germany and he can evaluate that data to form future financial
decisions.
Finding and analysis
Analysis of deployment of data base within Volkswagen

transactional processing system it helps company in managing the list of transactions that ave
been made at various places within the firm, It also helps in making decision as well as creation
of expert system which is some how related to the artificial intelligence. Deployment is most
used at the stations where there is need of automation especially in the communication system.
These kinds of deployments ensures that there is no need of installing software at every place
and can use it maintain all things from central servers. It also helps in the maintenance of the
mechanism as any default that is generated at any part of the working process can be analysed by
the data that is collected through it. It also helps in self maintenance of the IS as the central
serves are updated and automatically all the workstations are revised.

Critical evaluation of benefits and the risk of Information system in decision making
In the view point of Palensky and Dietrich (2011)information system helps in making
effective decisions. It felicitates the management in providing adequate informations about the
performance of the company which is ultimately used for taking decisions. In Volkswagen
currently they have faced the environmental issues so as to eliminate this kinds of the problem in
future information system can help up to a large extent. According to Mithas, Ramasubbu and
Sambamurthy (2011)there are several benefits of information system in decision making. Most
important decisions that could be taken with the help of this is regarding strategical as well as

tactical decisions. As it helps in making aims, objectives long and short term goals. It also helps
in monitoring the business environment by gathering informations related to the factors that
effects it. It also helps in making budgets, procedures and business process for every
organisation. On the contrary Lee and Yu (2012) states that interpretation and presentation can
easily done with the help of data that is collected by the organisation using IS. It has one basic
benefit that it helps in providing flexibility to the approach in which data can be utilised for
different purposes in a firm. There are certain risks that are associated with the use of IS as the
data remains unsafe and can be used by any of the firm. IS brings privacy concerns with it.
Analysis of the elements of the role of the ISM
The elements of roles of the ISM of the Volkswagen are described below: Customers : Each and every information system consist of end users or consumers. They
can be external or internal. External one are those people who visit the website for the
purpose of online shopping. Internal customer are those workers who receive salary from
payroll system, employee checking inventory and stock, etc. These all should be
managed be ISM of the venture. Products and services : Another element is managing the product and services. ISM
have to manage the various types of activities related with the products or services like
selling those on the internet. Business processes : Business activity includes different processes like talking to the
consumers, understanding their needs and demands, etc. (Dwivedi and et. al., 2011)
These are managed by the information system manager of the firm.
Communication technology : This is the other component of the roles of ISM. They have
to take care of all the digital modes of communication with in the company like email
chat, etc.
Analysis of key responsibilities of the ISM
ISM stands for Information System Manager. They are some one who have the
responsibility of managing all the tasks related to information system in a corporation.
Volkswagen consist of a information system managers who have following responsibilities: Securing the confidential information of the company : As firm is storing its some of the
important data on the cloud and sometimes transfers useful files on internet via their
websites (Laudon and Laudon, 2016). So there is a risk of unauthorised accessibility of
6

user. ISM has the responsibility to provide security to the personal or confidential data of
the firm. They uses various powerful firewalls for this purpose so that intruder can not
gain accessibility to that information. Repairing of any computer : As there are large number of users who use computer for
their work. If those system gets hanged or there occur any type of problem, then it is the
responsibility of ISM to solve that as no one knows that type of technical work. Updating the software : The windows of the system gets out dated many times. This
creates many problems like hacking (Laudon and Laudon, 2015). So, it is very important
to update the software regarding the safety and this is done by ISM only.
Database management : There are a vast range of data that are created every day in the
Volkswagen. These data have to be managed effectively on a data base. This is the task
of ISM to maintain all those large sum of information and handle that efficiently so that
there will be no loss of important data.
