more computers which are linked in order to share the resources, exchange the files, or allow the
electronic communication between each other (Santoro and et.al., 2018). The network may use
different types of topologies to connect with each other. Such topologies includes ring topology, star
topology, bus topology and mash topology etc. There are various different types of computer
networks some of them are described below:
PAN
It is the smallest and basic type of network which is generally made up of wireless network.
This connects very less number of computers as compared to LAN, MAN, WAN. This types of
network often founds in small offices or residence and this is generally managed by one p[erson or
organization from a single device.
LAN
Local Area Network are the private networks which are mainly designed for the small
physical area such as a group of building or a particular building. It is easy to design and Personal
computers and workstations are generally connected to each other through LAN. This type of network

relatively operates at high speed as compared to WAN and MAN. There are different types of media
access control methods in a LAN (Madon and Krishna, 2018). The most prominent which allows
the system to share the data and information in a large speed is Ethernet and which is developed
through Token ring. LAN allows the workstations connected locally in a building which lets them
communicate with each other without use of internet.
CAN
Campus Area Network are larger then LANs but smaller then WANs and generally found in
universities and small business or large K-12 school districts. This network can be spread across
several buildings which are fairly close to each which allows the users to share the resources.
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network are larger than LANs but smaller then WANs and incorporates
the elements from both types of networks. These networks generally span the entire geographic area
under a town or city or sometimes a campus. This network allows the connectivity of number of
LANs together to form a large network in a single cable which is called as MAN. It is generally
operated by private or a public company.
WAN
This can be private or public leased network and this one of the biggest network which covers
the long geographical area such as all the states of the country. This network uses the satellite and
links and various wireless signals to establish the communication over the large area. WAN generally
operates at low data rates. Wide Area network allow the exchange of information very quickly across
the world and this also ensures the connectivity of large number of people across the world (Purohit
and Thakar, 2019). It is very large network as compared to other networks and it can consists of
various different LANs, CANs and MANs within wide Area network.
