Introduction
Information technology is a vital part in the recent business world (Laudon and Traver
2016). All of the businesses starting from healthcare to tourism industry, all are in dire need of
information technology in order to sustain in the world market (Luftman, Lyytinen and Zvi
2017). To cope up with the pace and the variety of services, the companies have to be updated
with proper infrastructure. The aim of this report is to discuss the impacts of information
technology in a particular business sector. The business sector that has been considered for the
report is healthcare industry. The use of information technology in healthcare industry will be
discussed in detail and the impacts that the industry experiences will be briefed. For this report
the healthcare facility that has been selected is Calvary Private Hospital Bruce, in Australia.
Necessity of IT in Calvary Hospital
The chosen organisation for the report that is the Calvary Hospital is in a situation where
there is a need for an infrastructure of information technology. Recently, an accident in the
hospital caused loss of many documents that are related to the patients as well as of the
organisation. This incident led to a situation of high confusion, where the hospital personnel as
well as the patients are now confused about where everything is leading to. The accident caused
this situation of unrest as there was no backup for the documents and the backing up of the
information was yet to be done. Apart from that, data breaching was also found in the sequence.
The accident led many unwanted visitors in the facility that are suspected to be the second most
important cause for the data loss. Later it was found that their rival organisation has obtained
some of their confidential data, which is suspected to be occurred during the accident. Although

with the unity and dedication of all of the hospital personnel they managed to get out of the
mess, but they are now concerned about the future of the organisation. Due to less equipped
digital infrastructure, they faced such a crisis regarding their information storage. Hence, now
they are concerned about what if such instances take place again and the same consequences
follow. Therefore, the management of the hospital decided to equip their infrastructure with the
necessary requirements that would make their system digitally strong. They decided to introduce
core information technology so that none of the consequences can take place.
Importance of IT in business survival
Information technology plays the most vital part of any business organisation in the
recent world (Löfsten 2016). Starting from the basic management of the organisation, storage of
their confidential data to taking decisions for business activities are the responsibilities that
today’s information technology have over a business organisation (Cui et al 2015). The pace and
the competition of the recent market is increasing gradually. Every second is filled with millions
of digital activities all throughout the market. It is necessary for every business to make its
survival in the race (Baller, Dutta and Lanvin 2016). Hence, when all organisations, who are
performing their activity every second needs to be equipped with the best infrastructure that
would make them lead the race in the digital market race. When starting from data transfer to
money transaction – all are carried over the Internet, then it is evident enough that the
information technology is the most inevitable part for the survival of the businesses in the
present market (Blaschke et al 2018).

Requirement for IT application in Calvary Hospital
The management of the Calvary Hospital is looking for an IT implementation in their
entire infrastructure. From storing of all information, both of the patients and of the organisation
itself, to manage and protecting of those information, all will be carried out by the use of
information technology (Pozo 2017). For the implementation of the information technology in
the infrastructure of the hospital, there are some requirements that are to be done previously. The
first among them is to have a vendor IT team visit their facility and understand the requirements
that are necessary to be installed in order to have an IT infrastructure (Wang, Li and Liu 2016).
Next, after the requirements are done, proper planning for the project has to be done. For this
particular project, Waterfall model can be considered as the appropriate model (Model 2015).
As, the primary issue was regarding the storage and security of the data, cloud storage is
something that can be considered as one of the best solutions for having an IT infrastructure (Yu
et al 2017). In the next stage, the costing for the entire planning will be estimated and the final
report will be produced to the management. Finally, for the implementation of the services and
equipments to the system of the facility, an IT team will be required.
Use of IT implementation
As the entire system will be upgraded digitally, hence, there will be work for both the
employees as well as the customers (O'driscoll et al 2017). Firstly, there has to be an internal
updation among the employees of the organisations. Those who are new to the system have to
undergo a training process that will make them aware of their responsibilities that they need to
perform (Dyar, Tebano and Pulcini 2017). More importantly, making them aware of the
procedure that has to be followed by them in order to keep their responsibilities will be the

primary motive of the training. Besides, externally the customers has to be well acquainted with
the digital establishments of the facility. To perform that the facility needs to do campaigns that
will promote about the recent changes in their infrastructure. Through the campaigns, the
customers will come to know about the changes and will do the needful so that they can also
avail the digital services offered by the facility. Calvary Private Hospital can make the people
aware of their services through their official website and would all of the necessary contact
details that can be accessed by the customer in order to directly contact the facility to know in
details.
Advantages of IT
The advantages of an IT infrastructure over the healthcare facility will be in following
areas:
 People can avail the website for details about the hospital.
 Necessary changes or instructions that the customers need to be informed before handed
could be announced in their website.
 The information of the patients will be safely stored. No replications of the data could be
made or faking of the information cannot be done (Noe et al 2017).
 No chances of damage to the information as there would be backup stored in the cloud
server. Hence, damages to any device will not make any kind of data loss.
 Data security will be enhanced and no physical activities will lead to any kind of data
theft.
 Patients can be served immediately with easy access to the information by the personnel
of the hospital.

Risks of IT
With bringing ease into the functionality, there would be a number of risks associated
with the processes too. The risks are as follows:
 With information getting stacked into the cyber world, it would pose as a vulnerability
towards the cyber criminals.
 Probable physical attacks would not cause damage, but cyber actions and eavesdropping
would be a threatening to the information (Yue et al 2016)
 Cloud storage respond according to the server response of the service provider. Hence,
any disruption in the server of the service providers would lead to an interruption of the
hospital service too as they would not be able to access the information.
Maintenance of IT
Finally, after all of the necessary discussion, the maintenance of the infrastructure has to
be done in a proper and appropriate manner. The hospital management would require an
additional IT team for the maintenance of the infrastructure. Regular updation, servicing of the
equipments, keeping the network active are the daily activities of the IT team. Most importantly,
providing security to the information stored will be the biggest maintenance that the team has to
perform. It is not mandatory that with time, all of the activities need to be performed, but security
to the data is the thing that needs continuous maintenance. In the maintenance process of the
entire system, it has to be kept in mind that the securing the data by using possible means is the
only task for the team.

Conclusion
The report discussed that how a private hospital in Australia faced an accident that led to
both data damage and data theft. The instance made them adopt an IT infrastructure that would
avoid such consequences in the future course of time. Along with that it is also discussed that
how the implementation needs to be done and the requirements that are necessary for the
implementation. The later part of the report discussed about the advantages that are associated
with the IT implementation in the hospital infrastructure. Besides, the risks that need to be aware
of so that the cyber threats cannot break down the infrastructure are also briefed. The final part of
the report deals with the process of maintenance that would be required in order to make the
infrastructure work without any interruption. All of the impacts that an IT infrastructure has over
the healthcare industry are discussed in detail.
