Report
AI Summary
This report provides a comparative analysis of two articles focusing on Big Data Platforms and their impact on business research. The first article, "Big Data Platforms: What’s Next?" by Vinayak R. Borkar, Michael J. Carey, and Chen Li, discusses the evolution of data storage and processing, highlighting the use of platforms like HADOOP and the emerging ASTERIX. It emphasizes the importance of Big Data Analytics (BDA) for processing raw data and establishing relationships between different data points. The second article, "Six provocations for big data" by Boyd and Crawford, challenges the conventional view of BDA, arguing that it's not just about storage and processing, but also about establishing connections between data. This article also raises ethical concerns regarding the accessibility and potential misuse of data, especially in the context of real-time customer data access. The report contrasts the views of the authors, discussing the benefits and drawbacks of different platforms, and exploring the ethical considerations associated with the use of big data in business research.

1INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR BUSINESS RESEARCH
Summary for the Article: Vinayak R. Borkar, Michael J. Carey and Chen Li, (2012) “Big Data
Platforms: What’s Next?”
According to the author of this article, the technology has developed so much that the
information is no longer stored in traditional form. However, digital information, are updated in
the system on a daily basis. The Big Data Analytics is considered to be one of the platform to
store, process, and segregate data. The huge amount of the data that is generated in the business
can be dealt properly with the help of the big data analytics. Vinayak, Michael and Chen, said
that, to manage the big data or the huge amount data, technologies like HADOOP and HDFS are
the most profoundly used platforms. But the HADOOP platform has its own drawbacks as well.
Due to the Accidental nature of the HADOOP and the HDFS, one of the very promising
technology is being introduced in to the System that is ASTERIX. But removing the concept of
the big data analytics completely from the business is impossible. According to the author, the
large amount of the data that is generated from the information system can only be used properly
after they are processed by the big data analytics. The BDA is the very important for processing
and storing raw data for generating effective information. This is contradicted by Boyd, D. and
Crawford, K., 2011, who mentioned in their writing that the big data analytics is not important
for managing a huge size of the data, but for the way in which it relates one data to the other.
According to this author, BDA is essential for establishing relationship among the data. Without
establishing relationship among the data the analysis is not possible. The raw data set generated
by the users of the data is useless. No amount in what bulk they are entered in the BDA platform,
without proper link being established, they are of no use to the users. The author mentioned that
big data encourages a particular practise, which is known as the apophenia, a process of
measuring pattern to generate communication in the bulk of the data such that they can be

radiated in all the direction of the data. Author Vinayak, Michael and Chen says that the
ASTERIX is capable of handling the data which is the main function of the platform, however,
according to the other authors, only processing and storing and the modifying of the data is not
the only important task that is taken up by the Big Data Analytics tools that are in use in the
contemporary world. Just by understanding the statistics of the data, the link or the connection
between the data cannot be established. For example, if two people are using the same network
of the internet, it is not mandatory for one person to know the other.

Summary of the Article: Boyd, D. and Crawford, K., 2011, September. Six provocations for big
data. In A decade in internet time: Symposium on the dynamics of the internet and society.
This article by Boyd and Crawford, 2011, the author discusses about certain provocation
regarding the big data which can change the way in which people look at the technology.
According to this article, the people are already acquainted with the basic rules and regulation of
the BDA that is the storage and the processing of the huge amount of the data. But this article
says it loud and clear that the Big Data Analytics is not only used for the purpose of the storage
of the data. It used for the purpose of establishing link or the connection between two or more
number of data. The article says that the larger the amount of the data is, it is not necessary that
the data will be better than it used to be. However this is not supported by author, Vinayak,
Michael and Chen, who thinks that the bigger amount of the data are easier for the ASTERIX to
process. This is because, the ASTERIX is a platform that is used for conducting BDA with a
huge amount of the data which are treated equally while analysing. The platform provides an
ease of access to the users as it use the cloud based technologies in it. The cloud computing itself
is one of the user friendly technology and ASTERIX using it makes the BDA easier and
accessible. Boyd and Crawford, (2011) says that the “Just because it is Accessible Doesn't Make
it Ethical”. This means that the access being easier with the help of the BDA platforms can be
used unethically as well. This may lead to the misusage of the information in the system and be
against the rule of the third party access of the data. Numerous data basses are available for
performing the research however, just because they are availed online they cannot be used by the
researcher for the purpose of the research. Every company has their customer information
databases which are available for the purpose of the research. They are the storehouses of the
information reading products and the customers and many other details both of the clients and

the company. The Privacy, Confidentiality and Integrity of the data is hampered with the
accessing of the information present in the databases. However, for the developing platforms
like, the ASTERIX, the researchers have to get take the real time customer data for the
consideration for the research purpose, which according to Boyd and Crawford, (2011) is
unethical approach to the access of the data. This article mainly identifies certain incitements that
can be effective for the people who are planning on conducting researches in the sector of big
data. The article lays emphasis upon the areas where the technology can be used in other ways
considering the provocations of the BDA in the beginning.
