enhancing the overall efficiency and productivity of the company. It also helps in storing,
transmitting and retrieve the data of the business. The chosen company for the present study is
Tesco and has described the role of the information technology that is used in the chosen
company. Furthermore, it has also reflected on the types of computer systems that are used by
the company and various ethical and social issues that is faced by the organization. It has laid
emphasis on the importance of ICT, role of internet and intranet on the business. Lastly, it has
also thrown light on the role of IT in managing the business.

INTRODUCTION
Information technology is defined as the system of applications which is used in the
computer system. Information technology is used to store, transmit and manipulate the computer
data. Furthermore, it is also helps in effectively storing and preserving the data at one place. It is
beneficial for the company as it enhances various numbers of opportunities which have adopted
by much organization which contributes in generating more profit for the company and growth
opportunities for the future (Chege, and Wang ,2020). The present report is based on Tesco plc
which is one of the leading and largest supermarket chains. The company has also expanded it
business operations with the help of adopting new and advanced software system which has
helped the company to effectively collect the data and made strategies accordingly.
The report covers the classification of computer that is used by the business. Various
ethical and social issues in the business and its importance in the digital world(Sathish, and et.al.,
2020). The study further highlights the role of information and communication technology,
impact of internet and intranet on the business and role IT in management of the business.

In the modern world and with the increase in the role of the technology , computer is
considered as most important tool whether the company is operated solely or in the partnership.
Every company whether it is operated on large or small scale uses computer system for storing
the data of the daily transaction of the business.With th evolution of the technology computer is
classified on the basis of size and capacity and on the basis of purpose.
First on the basis of size and capacity
According to the Jouppi, and et.al., (2020) supercomputer is the fastest, powerful and the
most expensive type of computer for processing the data of the business. The size and storage
capacity are also used basically designed to process large amount of data in short period of time
and also result in to increase the productivity. On the other hand Ying, and et.al.,(2018) states
that mainframe computers refers to multiprogramming and high performance computers that

means this type of computer system can manage the workload more than 100 users. On the
contrary it is believed that multi frame computers storage capacity is enormous also contains
high speed processor. Stated by the Patterson, (2018)super computers is basically used in
scientific research Laboratories where mainframe computers is is basically used by the
departmental and commercial organisations such as Bank and companies and also government
departments like Railways. In order to increase the efficiency it is suggested that Tesco can also
use means in computer system in order to store and process use data in order to record all the
transactions relevant to business.
Apart from this Adamuthe, and Thampi, (2019) observed that mini computers are used by
many users which also help and process various other accessories suggest printers. These are
considered as medium type of computers with more functionality power and also expensive than
micro computers on the other hand computers are used as real time applications in industries and
also for the bookings.
On the basis of purpose
According to the Greene, and Lea, (2019)general computers has the ability to do everyday
tasks such as writing a word processing letter, preparation of document, financial analysis and
doing various calculations accurately computer which are used for general purpose. On the other
hand Ho, (2022)states that special purpose computers are designed in order to perform specific
task. The size, cost and storage depends upon the nature of work. These types of computers
required specific and input device and also different motherboard in order to conduct the work
effectively and efficiently. For example Automatic teller machine and weather forecasting
stimulators etc.
Ethical and social issues in the digital world faced by the company
According to the Kenwright, (2018) technology has not only improved the efficiency of the
business but also helped in improving the profitability .On the contrary Buchholz, DeHart, and
Moorman, (2020) observed that today business also faces various ethical issues and in this
situation it becomes important to the company for the company to make critical decisions which
helps in overcoming the risk that is associated with the company.
Misuse of the personal information: According to Susser, Roessler, and Nissenbaum,
(2019) it is observed that in order to purchase and online payment it requires the personal details
of the customers on websites and engage with different business online and also on social media.

But on the hand Royakkers, and et.al., (2018) states that is the responsibility of the company to
maintain the privacy of the personal details of their customer and also confidential data of the
business with the increase in the role of technology has resulted into rise in the cyber attacks
which hacks the data and confidential information and misuse it. This is one of the major ethical
challenges faced by the company.
Misinformation: According to the Leikas, and et.al., (2022) misinformation is another
ethical issues that is faced by the companies in today’s digital era. Wrong or fabricated
information that is spreaded by any unauthorise person can result into negative image of the
company in the eyes of the customers which ultimately affect their profitability and sales. On the
contrary Martinez-Martin, and Kreitmair, (2018) believes that the technology can have positive
and negative impact on the business and the ethical issues faced by the company can have long
term negative impact on the business of the company. Moreover, it is necessary for Tesco to
develop and adopt new and advanced technology in their software systems which also help in
protecting the data of the customers personal information and also the company.
Communication breakdown: As per the Gilbert, (2019) with the growing availability of
the technology has helped many business to conduct online transaction and communicate with
the suppliers through virtual meetings but on the other hand Cover, Haw, and Thompson, (2022)
states that it has also resulted in to bad internet connectivity which can impact the
communication and result into breakdown and can impact the business. It can be said that
technology can have various benefits but it can also have various limitations which can have
long term impact on the company which is necessary to solve in order to effectively operate the
business and maintain position in the market.
Privacy and security: According to Hantrais, and et.al., (2021) this has been various
privacy and security issues that is faced by the business in the digital world. Data and customer
information is one of the most aspects of every business and misuse of the information can have
negative impact on the business. Use of artificial intelligence can have positive impact on the
business but it can also have negative impact on the business.
It is stated by the Chapman, and Marich, (2019) various ethical and social issues are faced
by the business which can have negative impact on the business so it is necessary for Tesco to
plan effective strategies and approaches in order to overcome and eliminate these issues which
can have long term impact on the image of the company. Furthermore, it can be said that

company can adopt various technologies but on the other hand they should also plan strategies in
order to provide better security to the data and information of their customers.
Role of information and communication technology and impact of internet and intranet on the
business.
According to Gnambs, (2021) information and communication technology includes all the
digital technologies that help the business in using the information and covers all the products
that are dealt in the digital form. On the other hand Jimada-Ojuolape, and Teh, (2020) states
that with the help of ICT it enable the business to be more effective and efficient and also
helped in responding to the customers’ needs. It also helps in conducting the business activities
which includes design, manufacturing , sales and distribution department. With the help of this
technology receiving feedback from the customers through online sources will help to
understand their needs and requirements and deliver services accordingly. Ibrahim, and Jebur,
(2019) states that ICT helps in better communication and also save time and money which
includes quick transfer of information within the internal department. On the other hand Levius,
Safa, and Weeks, (2018) observes that there is lack of security as the business can face various
issues related to the use of information and communication technology which can impact the
functioning of the company. With the help of this more number of websites are available which
helps collecting and gathering information about the needs and requirements of the customers
which helps in successfully operating the business.

is using in order to expand and grow its business and increase its customers. Every innovation

employees that are using internet can be vulnerable to cyber attack which can have impact on the
business.

On the other hand intranet refers to the close network that is used by various organization
and also it is restricted network that enable the employees to share the data and information
within the company. According to Park, Park, and Heo, (2018) intranet allows close
communication among the employees of the company and also helps the employees to be aware
about the culture of their company. On the contrary it is much expensive than internet as setting
up the intranet infrastructure needs investment by the company which is mainly done in big and
large scale organization. Apart from this with the help of intranet it help in increasing
collaboration and enhance the decision making power of the company. Whereas the other
problem that can have negative impact on the business that is setting up is a complex process and
is also confined for the internal use only and employees cannot have access to any social media
or external sources while using intranet.
It can be said that internet and intranet both have positive and negative impact on the
functioning of the company but it depends upon the Tesco to use proper and effective tools in
order to effectively operate the business.

evolution if information technology has resulted into reducing the job opportunities for humans
as the software systems in the company can perform the task that is meant for employees and can
impact the employees and their performance. Apart from this for the manager it has helped to

is recommended to Tesco for improving the operations of the company. On the other hand it is
believed that with the advancement of information technology has increase the dependence of

the task in less time and efficiently. Moreover, it has helped in storing the huge amount of data

decisions for the management of the company. On the other hand the manager has the

help the company to enhance the productivity of the business and can help in expanding its

Analysis and discussion
From the above analysis it can be observed that with the evolution of technology has helped
the business take effective decision and also to overcome the challenges faced by the company
while carrying out the operations of the business. With the effective use of information
technology, it has helped to store, process the data and information of the company securely.
From the analysis it is also observed that there are various types of computer that can be used in
the business in order to record the transaction of the business electronically. On the other hand it
can be said that with the application of the system software will help to securely store the
information of the customers and also of the company and also ensure that all the data protection

laws are strictly followed by the company. Furthermore, it is necessary for the company to
follow positive ethical approaches that are related to the digital world. But it is also observed that
various ethical and social issues are faced by the company such as misuse of the information of
the company which can negatively affect the business and its productivity .Moreover, increase in
the number of cyber attacks and unauthorised use of information has enabled the company to
provide more protection and data security(Einhorn, Marnewick, and Meredith, 2019). From the
findings it can be said that it is necessary for Tesco to use new and advanced technologies in
their systems in order to understand the requirements and preferences of the customer which has
helped in delivering quality products as per their requirements. On the other hand it is also
observed from the findings that Information and communication technology is also considered as
important part of the business as it helps to use to manage the telecommunications and intelligent
building systems. It also helps in making business more efficient which also helps in quickly
responding the customers’ requirements and needs and deliver products and services accordingly
in the market.
Apart from this it is also observed that with the help of internet connectivity all the
technologies and business are running efficiently which would not have been possible without
internet. Furthermore with the help of internet connectivity has helped the companies to collect
the data and buying habits of the customers and create marketing strategies accordingly . On the
other hand digital marketing techniques that is used by the company can only be possible with
the helps of internet .thus it plays a very major role in running the business operation
efficiently .On the other hand from the analysis it can be said that intranet is also considered as
useful tool for business as with the use of it enhance the internal communication among the
various departments of the company such as sharing of information and data from one
department to another and also helps in overcoming the issues that arise within the
company(Andry, and et.al., 2019). Apart from this limitation has also been analysed that excess
cost is incurred in setting up the intranet for the business and is considered as complex process in
order to run the business efficiently. Information technology also helps the manager to effective
coordinate and communicate with the employees and other stakeholders of the company
operating form the remote areas which also results in to increasing the efficiency and they can
take quick decisions for the benefit of the company.

CONCLUSION
From the above report it can be concluded that information technology is considered as
integral part of the business as it helps in enhancing the efficiency of the operations of the
business. It is considered an important factor for both the short, medium and long scale
companies. Further it has various benefits but also faces various issues and challenges which can
have negative impact on the operation of the business. Apart from this application of various
system software in the business helps in securing and storing huge amount of data in the
electronic form. The report summarise the importance of information technology in the
