Inglorious Basterds is a black comedy war film directed by Quentin Tarantino and
released in 2009. The film’s cast consists of Bradd Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael
Fassebender among others. The film is set during the time of the World War II and tells the
story of a group of Jewish American soldiers and a psychopathic German SS Colonel
tracking down the group. The film is considered to be one of the best films made in the career
of Quintin Tarantino.
The purpose of this essay is to fin d out the various film techniques used by
Quintin Tarantino to portray the characters of Aldo Raine and Colonel Hans Landa.
Quintin Tarantino in the movie Inglorious Basterds has used various kinds of film-
making techniques to distinguish the characters of 1st Lieutenant Aldo Raine and SS Colonel
Hans Landa in the movie. Tarantino, with his acute knowledge of the film-making
techniques. It I s with his knowledge of cinematography that the film-maker has managed to
portray the characters of the protagonist and the antagonist in this movie. Through his film,
he has revealed the true nature of the Nazi activities to the audience by using Jewish
vengeance as a form of brutal comedy. As stated by Setka (2016), the film-maker, using his
cinematography to portray the character of SS Colonel Hans Landa , a psychopathic human
being with a sense of humour who is on the lookout for a group of Jewish American soldiers
led by Aldo Raine. The character of Hans Landa is shown to be psychopathic, yet with a
sense of humour, as Tarantino wanted the movie to be a comedy movie although a black
comedy at heart. He is shown to be a person who is shown to speak both English and German
fluently as well as excellent French and Italian.
The film-maker has also made use of dialogues to make sure that the communication
between the characters can be well understood by the audience. The Colonel is apparently
shown to be an expert in language as he quickly identifies the fake Italians in the scene

showing the Italian Escorts (Rinehart, 2016). Apart from that, Tarantino also portrays the
fact that Colonel Landa is indeed the best as well as the worst kind of villain there can be in a
movie. He has successfully managed to portray Colonel Landa as one of the most
dynamically complex character that one can find within the film. He is shown to be a
character who always wants to win and would do anything to achieve that as is evidenced
from his betraying his country at the end of the country. Indeed the film-maker has created
one of his most powerful villains in Colonel Hans Landa.
Similarly, the film-maker has used various techniques to portray the protagonist of the
film – 1st Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the leader of a group of Jewish American soldiers. Aldo
Raine is portrayed as a hardnosed Southerner, who with his group of Jewish Americans are
always looking to kill Nazis wherever they could find one. As stated by Hapugoda (2016),
the film-maker had named the character as a homage to both the actor and World War II
veteran Aldo Ray. It is also noted in the film, that in spite of being called the leader of the
Basterds, Aldo Raine only killed one Nazi in the entire film. He is a character of
unpredictable decisions, constant calm even during pressure and his remarkable dialogues.
It can be said that Aldo and his Basterds are a way for Tarantino to engage the audiences into
knowing the past during the World War II times. The film-maker has used various techniques
of cinematography to portray these two characters in all its glory to the audiences so that the
audiences can enjoy the movie as well as know about the horrors of Nazi Germany during the
reign of Hitler. The other characters in the movie also contribute to the story of the movie but
it is in fact the two most important characters, Aldo Raine and Colonel Hans Landa and the
rivalry between them that forms the focus of the story. The film-maker has accurately used all
his cinematography, music, lighting and other film-making crafts to make sure that the true
focus of the film falls on these two characters (Detre, 2013). It is these two characters that has
managed to drive the story of the movie forward and into a successful ending. It is because of

the interaction between these two characters that the story of the movie turns out to be quite
successful. It can be said that the film-maker knew exactly what he wanted and how to do
things to make his film successful. All his efforts had been made successful by his knowledge
of cinematic techniques.
Thus, from the above discussion, it can be concluded that the characters of Aldo
Raine and Colonel Hans Landa play an equally important role in the movie. It is the
interaction between these two characters that the audience totally enjoys the movie. Tarantino
has successfully used all his film-making techniques to create two characters that can be
considered to be equal to each other. It is their rivalry which forms the major part of the story.
Thus, it can be said that Quintin Tarantino has successfully managed to create two of the
most powerful characters of his film-making career in the movie Inglorious Basterds.
