1INNOVATIONS: DRONE DELIVERY
Sustainability is a global issue with the rising need to focus on the changing climate
patterns. The threats related to the uncontrolled alterations in the surrounding environment
have resulted in unparalleled surge of the attention of public towards the various challenges
related to the environment (Tukker, Borup and Geerken 2017). At present the innovations
being made consider the sustainability of the creation and how the innovation affects the
environment, is a basic concern. The topic of discussion of this paper is the innovation of the
drone delivery vehicles that have been receiving popularity owing to its mobility and ease of
accessibility to the remote areas.
The drone delivery system has become readily accepted in the logistic sector due to its
sensing abilities that uses the cameras and high definition sensors. Among the various
advantages of the delivery system is the systems’ ease of accessibility to difficult
geographical terrains. The technology has been successfully used by many of the retail giants
such as Amazon. In the year 2013, Amazon launched “Amazon Prime Air” that uses drones
named “Octocopters” in order to deliver products (Welch 2015). The first product delivered
was to a customer staying within a range of 16kms and the product weighed 55 pounds, time
taken being half an hour. The retail giant has tested the system on various occasions and has a
patent to its name for the drone delivery system. The use of drones for the purpose of delivery
has been assessed in the sphere of food delivery as well. In the year 2016, Dominos
successfully developed a merchandising delivery of pizza by making use of the drone
technology.
Advantages of the drone delivery system
The technology is in its initial stage and is evolving faster with the advantages it is
laced with. Some of the advantages of the drone delivery system are as follows:

2INNOVATIONS: DRONE DELIVERY
1. The product delivery process can be faster if the drone system is used. The main purpose
of the drone delivery system is to render services that include delivering products to difficult
terrains and remote areas where manual delivery takes a lot more effort and time (Bamburry
2015). The software installed in these unmanned vehicles aids them to deliver to exact
location and has an added advantage as it is highly preferable for those cases where the
products need to be delivered urgently.
2. The technology has the potential to conserve energy and save time. Delivery drones could
successfully replace the traditional manned delivery systems via trucks and aeroplanes thus
save fuels and help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions saving the environment from getting
polluted (Park, Kim and Suh 2018). Though being an expensive technique it reduces cost
price to some extent by curbing the costs of handling and proper shipping.
The problem with online shopping is related to the delivery process such as delivering
to the wrong address and late deliveries. The delivery drones are the best solution to the
above problems (Slabinac 2015). The new and attracting concept is helping the environment
go green and saving fossil fuels. E-commerce is a rapidly growing platform and usage of
drones in delivery will add to its brand and have a positive effect on the revenue of the firm
due to the safe delivery of the products and that to in time. It is a safer method to deliver
products with respect to the environmental benefits, promoting e-commerce, safer and
prompt delivery. Thus the drone delivering system is a disruptive innovation that is it holds
the potential to build a modern and value market replacing the old technologies in the domain
and promoting e-commerce.
