Having worked as a civil engineer in an engineering firm, I am well knowledgeable on
the importance of integrating the concept of sustainability in the running of the organization. It is
as a result of embracing the social responsibility and sustainability that led to the success of my
organization. I witnessed several organizations fail as a result of their failure to embrace the
concept of sustainability. Their failure was also ascribed to the lack of the management to take
leading position in the management of potential risks as well developing the organization based
on its strengths to achieve the available opportunities.
Sustainability should be embraced in an organization because of several strategic reasons.
First, when sustainability aspect is observed in the organization, there is efficiency in the running
of the operations. This is because it enables the firm to save some costs that it could have used to
cover the losses associated with lack of sustainability risks. Besides, the appreciation of
sustainability within the organization helps the management to make necessary improvements in
the company operations. Secondly, sustainability observance ensures that risk reduction
techniques are put in place (Lagas, 2015). This is accompanied by the application of the
necessary changes according to the organization environmental changes. Having worked in the
organization, I noticed that the firm’s profile and the image had been enhanced because its
engagement in the sustainable operations that were put into consideration social responsibility
activities. This attracted many customers and the same reduced conflicts among the other major
stakeholders. Similarly, employees’ commitment was enhanced.
From experience I gained from my organization, I can confirm that when businesses fail
to incorporate sustainability, they end up failing. This is because they experience different
problems and risks arising from the dissatisfied stakeholders. Besides, the lack of sustainability
can result in the depletion of the available company resources, leading to the closure of the
organization.The organization also lack various techniques on how to motivate their workers on
matters concerning crucial initiatives associated with sustainability. Studies show that many
organizations that have ignored sustainability appear because they are unable to understand their
customers and other concerned parties and resources that may be important for the prosperity of
the company (Laughland & Bansal, 2011).
